- Collection Creator Biography:
Princeton University. Princeton Action for Chile.
Princeton Action for Chile (PAC) was a student organization established in October of 1976 following the assassination of Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier in Washington, D.C. PAC—primarily led by Peter Railton *1983 (Philosophy), Rebecca Scott *1979 (History), and George Riley '1979—focused its efforts on opposing the military junta in Chile led by Augusto Pinochet and formed part of a national network of affiliated actions group opposing the junta.
PAC's major actions, which took place mostly during the academic years of 1976-1977 and 1977-1978, included drafting a campus petition that called for both an investigation in Letelier's murder and an end to U.S. support of the junta, lobbying for the U.S. to cease aid to Chile, letter writing campaigns to support Chilean political prisons, convening panels and lectures to educate the campus community about Chile, and organizing a benefit concert on campus attended by Letelier's widow Isabel.
The group was succeeded by Princeton Action for Latin America in 1979.
