Alexander Hamilton was a lawyer, politician, and the first secretary of the
Treasury of the United States. The letters and documents in this series are
primarily concerned with his work as secretary of the Treasury and include
circular letters distributed to collectors across the United States and multiple
letters to officers at the Bank of New York (which he founded in 1784). A few of
the items relate to his work as a lawyer as well as his military service. The
items are arranged in three files: Letters, Circular Letters, and Documents.
