Letter book of outgoing correspondence kept by Gabriel de Iturbe e Iraeta
(patriarch and head of the Iturbe commercial enterprise from 1797-1812) during
the period of May 27, 1798 to May 30, 1801. The letters address primarily
business and commercial concerns, although there are numerous more personal
letters to a select group of close relatives.
As the letter book reveals, Iturbe's business contacts in this period were
largely with prominent individuals in Havana, in a variety of major cities in
Spain, and in Manila. He pursued to a lesser extent commercial interests with
individuals in Lima, Guayaquil, New Orleans and Bayonne (France). Gabriel de
Iturbe's activity as a factor of the Royal Company of the Philippines is well
defined by this collection of correspondence as are his friendships and
business relations with a number of prominent Spanish nobles and future high
officials in colonial government.
