Consists of selected manuscripts and letters of eighteenth-century English clergyman and hymnist John Newton.

- Scope and Contents
The collection contains over forty letters by Newton, one of which is addressed to Hannah More, three to William Cowper, and twenty-six to Thomas Haweis, concerning Newton's research on the history of the Church of England. Also included are three autograph manuscripts of hymns, all dated 1792, and a ninety-two page notebook in the hand of the author containing the minutes of the Eclectic Society from 1787 to 1789.

Newton
John Newton was an English clergyman who had been a captain of slave ships. He authored numerous hymns including the famous "Amazing Grace."

Various AM. Letters to Ebenezer Maitland and Dr. Benamer purchased in 1979 from John Wilson.

The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.
