Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of papers of Scott (Princeton Class of 1877), professor at Princeton for 50 years. The collection includes the manuscripts for the third editions of An Introduction to Geology (1932) and A History of Land Mammals in the Western Hemisphere (1937) and the notebooks and typescript of Some Memories of a Paleontologist (1939), as well as correspondence between Scott and the leading natural scientists of the day, such as Henry Fairfield Osborn. The reminiscences in the Memories are rich in anecdotal material concerning Scott's grandfather, Charles Hodge, a leading Presbyterian theologian and professor at the Princeton Theological Seminary. Additions include three notebooks of Scott's lecture notes taken while at Princeton, 1874-1876, and a typescript autobiography of his Princeton undergraduate years, entitled "Princeton 1873-78, Underclass Life in College."
