Consists of miscellaneous material of Lincoln Gilmore Smith, a physicist and professor of physics at Princeton University, relating to his construction and use of mass spectrometers.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of miscellaneous material of Smith regarding his mass spectrometry work at Princeton University. Included are annual progress reports on "High Resolution Mass Spectrometer" presented by Smith and Walker Bleakney, dated from 1962 to 1966; patents for mass spectrometers (1954-1965); a copy of Smith's 1950 article titled "Magnetic Electron Multipliers for Detection of Positive Ions"; and related correspondence. Accompanying the patents, reports, and correspondence are several illustrations and diagrams, photographs, and printed material.

Collection Creator Biography:

Smith, Lincoln Gilmore, 1912-

Lincoln Gilmore Smith earned a graduate degree from Princeton University in 1937 before joining the staff of the University where he served as a professor of physics until 1946. In 1946, Smith became an associate professor at the University of Michigan; and, in 1948, he joined the staff of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. While holding these various positions, Smith researched topics such as electron impact phenomena, infrared spectroscopy, and shock waves. Lincoln Smith returned to Princeton in 1957 to work on improving the mass spectrometer, and continued with this work until his death in 1972.
