The collection consists chiefly of several official documents from the years just following World War II, when Samuel Reber was Acting Deputy Director for the Office of European Affairs with the U.S. Department of State and, later, Acting United States High Commissioner for Germany. Included is a typed transcript of an NBC broadcast (July 26, 1947) that was part of a series titled "Our Foreign Policy"> The subject of this broadcast was "Where Is Italy Heading?," and participants were Reber, Harold Van Buren Cleveland, and Sterling Fisher. There is a printed memorandum, dated April 18, 1949, which includes signatures of burgomasters of the region around Radkersburg, Austria, with a typed English translation; it was presented to Reber and other representatives of European Allies to solicit help for the people of Radkersburg in their fight against annexation by Yugoslavia. Also included are copies of a memorandum from the Office of the U.S. High Commission for Germany, dated March 8, 1951, regarding the occupation of Germany by the European Allied forces, as well as a revised version of the Occupation Statute, dated March 13, 1951, which bears a red "Restricted" stamp.

Additionally, there is a copy of a typed manuscript (17 pp.) by Reber's niece, Lucy T. Briggs, "The Amazon Trip," about her trip down the Amazon River which started on July 6, 1957. Dated July 26, 1957, the manuscript ends with a holograph note by Briggs to her uncle. And there is also a thank you note from Jean McCracken Storck to Reber.

Reber, Samuel.

Samuel Reber served as a United States foreign service officer for twenty-four years. On May 16, 1950, while he was still working on the Austrian Treaty, he was named by the State Department to be political adviser to John J. McCloy for the United States High Commissioner for Germany, and became Acting United States High Commissioner for Germany, working on the ratification of the Bonn peace contract with the Western Allies and the European Defense Community Treaties.

Lucy Briggs, linguist, author and editor, who wrote and edited books about the Aymara language of Bolivia and Peru, was the niece of Samuel Reber.
