This collection contains Valdivieso's correspondence with Latin American writers and literary critics such as Fernando Alegría, Margo Glantz, Octavio Paz, Gonzalo Rojas, Manuel Rojas, and Jaime Valdivieso. Drafts of short essays and talks, including an interview with Octavio Paz, also appear in the collection.

Valdivieso, Mercedes
Mercedes Valdivieso was born on March 1, 1924, in Santiago, Chile. Her literary career began in 1961 with the publication of La brecha, a foundational feminist Latin American novel. She wrote several novels and founded two journals: Adán, a Chilean men's magazine and Breakthrough, a feminist periodical. Valdivieso taught at Rice University for 20 years, retiring in 1989, and returned to Chile in 1991. Her fiction and scholarship offered new ways forward for Latin American feminism.
