With a "Plans and Purposes" page sharing the retailer's reasoning for choosing this selection of books: "even more urgent should be the sweeping condemnation of the myraid of worthless books that are offered our childen;" "the child's thought should be shaped by those minds whose wisdom has been given in good books of and for all times;" "John Martin's choice of books covers those works which are recognized as a foundation for all that is best in later reading." Also with a letter from Martin to his "children friends" encouraging them to get to know his "book friends." Title listings interspersed with quotes about books. A few decorative black and white illustrations scattered throughout.
