Abstract
The papers of David Aiken Reed (1880-1953) consist primarily of clippings illustrating the political career of Pennsylvania Senator Reed (Class of 1900) during the years 1914-1940 with a few photographs of World War I campaigns, correspondence from President Herbert Hoover, the publisher Henry Luce and General John J. Pershing, Head of the American Expeditionary Forces of World War I, two letters of commendation, a testimonial, three army documents, and printed copies of a few speeches by Senator Reed.

Description
Consists of scrapbooks of primarily newspaper clippings, but also photographs, correspondence, and copies of speeches, documenting the career of Reed (Princeton Class of 1900) between 1914 and 1940. Clippings also document, among other subjects, World War I, the 1932 Bonus March, the 1936 Johnstown, Pennsylvania, flood, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Notable correspondents include Herbert Hoover, Henry Luce, and General John J. Pershing. Some Hoover correspondence and clippings relate to Reed’s participation in the London Naval Conference of 1930 as the U.S delegate.

Biography
David Aiken Reed, lawyer and United States Senator from Pennsylvania, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 21, 1880, the son of James H. and Kate J. (Aiken) Reed.
After attending Shadyside Academy, Pittsburgh in 1896, he graduated with an A.B.from Princeton University in 1900 and an LL.B in 1903 from the University of Pittsburgh. Married Adele Wilcox on November 12m 1902 (died June 8, 1948) and then Edna French on December 15, 1948. Two children: David Aiken Reed Jr. (Princeton Class of 1927) and Rosamond Reed (wife if Charles Denby, Class of 1922).
Major Reed served overseas in World War I with the 311th Field Artillery participating in the Meuse-Argonne and Verdun offensives. He served as Acting Chief of Staff of the United Section of Inter-Allied Armistice Commission and American representative on Allied Economic Commission. Was Lieutenant-Colonel, Field Artillery Reserve, 1919-22.
He was a member of the Law Firm, Reed Smith, Shaw and McClay of Pittsburgh. He became Chairman of the Pennsylvania's first Workmen's Compensation Bill, 1912-13, United States Senator from Pennsylvania, 1922-35 (Chairman of the Senate Committee on Military Affairs, member of Finance, Foreign Affair and Immigration Committees. Served as United States delegate to the London Naval Conference of 1930. He was a Trustee and received a Honorary LL.D. degree from Princeton in 1925. Senator Reed expired on February 10, 1953.

The collection was a gift of and given to Princeton University Library on (MC100). The collection was transferred from the Manuscript Division of Rare Books and Special Collections, Firestone Library to the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library on March 26, 1992.
