Abstract
The James A. Baker III Oral History Project is a joint project run by the Seeley G. Mudd Library at Princeton University and the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University. The collection consists of transcripts and audio files of interviews with individuals who knew and worked closely with James A. Baker III during his career in politics and public service.

- Scope and Contents
The James A. Baker III Oral History Project is a joint project run by the Seeley G. Mudd Library at Princeton University and the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University. The project seeks to document the career of James A. Baker III, who was a central figure in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George Bush in the 1980s and early 1990s and led presidential campaigns for Presidents Gerald Ford, Reagan and Bush over the course of five consecutive presidential elections from 1976 to 1992.
The colletion consists of transcripts and audio files of interviews with individuals who knew and worked closely with James A. Baker III during his career in politics and public service.
Collection History
- Acquisition:
The Frank Fahrenkopf interview with Tom DeFrank was added to the collection in 2013. The accession number for this addition is ML.2013.008. Thirteen interviews by Kate Kirkland were added in 2014. The accession number for these additions is ML.2014.041. The Jim Cicconi interview with Tom DeFrank was also added in 2014. The accession number for this addition is ML.2014.044. The Daniel Kurtzer interview with Robert "K.C." Johnson was added in 2015. The accession number for this addition is ML.2015.013. The interviews that comprise Series 3: Leadership Documentary Interviews were donated by staff at the Baker Institute on behalf of James A. Baker III in 2013. The accession number for this donation is ML.2014.011. The Derek Chollet interview was added in 2016. The accession number for this addition is ML.2016.007.

- Processing Information
Processed by Kristen Turner and Maureen Callahan in 2011-2013, Rossy Mendez in 2015, Kristen Turner and Rachel Van Unen in 2014-2016 and Helene van Rossum in 2019. The transcripts have been edited for clarity including the deletion of stage directions and the conversations of outside persons. Sensitive personal information such as social security numbers have been redacted from the production records in Series 3: Leadership Documentary Interviews.
Casey Reca added additional descriptive information about interview content to some components in 2024.

Individual interview transcripts may be restricted. Consult the folder list or contact the library for additional details. Original audio and video files exist but are restricted.

Single copies may be made for research purposes. To cite or publish quotations that fall within Fair Use, as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission is required. For instances beyond Fair Use, it is the responsibility of the researcher to determine whether any permissions related to copyright, privacy, publicity, or any other rights are necessary for their intended use of the Library's materials, and to obtain all required permissions from any existing rights holders, if they have not already done so. Princeton University Library's Special Collections does not charge any permission or use fees for the publication of images of materials from our collections, nor does it require researchers to obtain its permission for said use. - Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
