Biography and History

The Program in American Civilization at Princeton University, later known as the Program in American Studies, began in 1942 and is the University's oldest interdepartmental program of study. Drawing faculty from Architecture, English, History, and other departments, the program works to integrate the historical and literary studies traditionally identified with American Studies with newer methodologies and approaches. Inthe spring of 1964 the Program sponsored a three-day conference titled Design in America, in which research papers on architecture and city planning were presented by a number of scholars in the field.
