Biography and History

William Beebe was an American naturalist and explorer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Beebe studied at Columbia University (1896-1899) and left without graduating to join the New York Zoological Society as an assistant bird keeper. Beebe later served as the Society's first curator of birds (1902-1916) and director (1923-1952) of its Department of Tropical Research.
