Biography and History
Kristen Timothy served from 1993-1995 as the United Nations Coordinator for the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in September 1995.Timothy was instrumental in the development by the UN Conference Secretariat of the Beijing Platform for Action, the policy document adopted by the member states at the conference. She actively promoted access by civil society to the official deliberations, acting as the Secretariat's liaison with the Equipo, the non-governmental group established to coordinate the activities of NGO's attending the official conference. She participated in planning missions to China and was a major advocate and facilitator of the use of new technologies during the conference. She was a regular speaker at events preceding the conference advocating non-governmental and governmental commitment to concrete actions to address the inequities, poverty and human rights violations experienced by women and girls worldwide.

These records include the working papers of Kristen Timothy in preparation for the 1995 United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing. They contain materials that document the evolution of the Platform for Action adopted at the conference from a short statement of major campaigns for the international community to mount, drawing on the recommendations of three previous world conferences on women organized by the UN, to a major statement of policy goals in twelve critical areas of concern to women and girls globally.
