Biography and History

Allen Macy Dulles, son of Clover Todd and Allen Welsh Dulles, was a student of history and politics with plans for a career in public service until he sustained a serious injury in the Korean War. Dulles (born in 1930) graduated from Princeton University with a bachelors degree in History in 1951, having spent his senior year studying in England at Oxford University. He entered the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant and a platoon leader and was sent to Korea. On November 15, 1952, Dulles suffered a massive head injury from mortar fire. He spent years in recovery at hospitals and medical facilities in the United States and in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. He returned to the United States in the early 1970s, settling near family in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
