Biography and History
Ford Madox Brown, English painter, was born in Calais, France, and trained in Antwerp, Paris, and Rome before returning to England in 1845. Brown became friendly with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who studied briefly with him in 1848, and with other members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His best-known paintings are The Last of England (1852-1855) and Work (1852-1863).
