Biography and History
Gustave Fougères (1863-1927), a Hellenist and professor of archaeology, was the director of L'Ecoles Française d’Athènes during the years 1915 to 1919. His name is connected with French cultural affairs in Greece during that period. He is also known for outstanding archaeological research on ancient Greek history and civilization. During his directorship, Fougères corresponded with several Hellenists, archaeologists, Byzantinists and epigraphists, among them Charles Picard, Gabriel Millet, Charles Dugas,and Emile Bourguet
