The Student Christian Association and its predecessors were the dominant religious organizations at Princeton University for almost a hundred and fifty years. The Philadelphian Society, founded by a small group of students in 1825, was the quasi-official campus religious agency by the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1930 the Student-Faculty Association (SFA), organized by the Dean of the Chapel, took over the Society's programs, focusing on community service. In 1946 the Student Christian Association (SCA) replaced both the Society and the SFA, coordinating both religious and community service activities in campus. The Student Volunteers Council succeeded the SCA in 1967.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1923-1971

The Correspondence series primarily documents Bowman's childhood and young adulthood, from his stay as a boy at a sanitarium in Kansas City for diabetes treatment through his years at Stanford and Princeton. Correspondence between Bowman and his mother, Mary Augusta Brooks Bowman, is particularly rich in part because they wrote each other almost daily and in great detail. Bowman's letters to his mother from Stanford and Princeton, in particular, are lively and quick-witted and reveal his myriad social activities, impressions of college life, and opinions on subjects of all sorts, from family matters to politics to popular films and actors. Correspondence with his father, sister, and brother can be equally revealing but does not match the sheer volume of correspondence between mother and son. Letters from Bowman's friends are also worth noting for their vivid evocations of private school and college life in the 1920s and 1930s. Bowman corresponded with several young women, including a cousin, Edith Brooks, who was traveling in the car with Bowman at the time he was killed. The young women's letters, in particular, contain a vivaciousness and convey their own and Bowman's very active social lives. Bowman also maintained a correspondence over many years with a member of the crew he met on a Cunard Lines voyage he took as a boy with his family. The crew member sent Bowman many letters and postcards from his voyages around the world.

Athletic Rulebooks, Handbooks and Publications, 1902-2003

General athletic files contain published rulebooks and guidebooks for individual sports, especially from the mid-twentieth century and the 1970s, many printed by the NCAA, as well as copies of periodicals such as Modern Gymnast and football programs from Princeton and elsewhere. There are also printed NCAA championship booklets, convention bulletins, manuals, rules and regulations. Subseries 1B: Departments, 1942-1972 (bulk 1956-1972) contains correspondence with departmental chairs and others concerning the organization and functioning of individual departments, their programs, and research. The correspondence, which may be of a confidential nature, is supplemented by the confidential reports to the Presidents, to be found in Series 2E (Administrative–Office of the President). Reorganization is a recurring theme among the departmental correspondence, and researchers should be aware of mergers and separations of departments. Examples are the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and the Department of Economics and Sociology, which by the mid-sixties were reorganized into separate departments of Economy, Anthropology and Sociology. As a result, information on the 'Econometric Research Program" can be found under "Economics and Sociology" for the period 1957-1960 and under "Economics" for the period 1960-1970. Information about the internal structure of departments may be found in the Princeton University Catalogue.

Schoolwork includes notes and notebooks as well as graded papers and exams from both the Lawrenceville School and Princeton University. Lawrenceville School material includes coursework in Mathematics, American History, English, and Latin. Hutchinson's school compositions include an essay on the "Pinies," people living in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, as well as a tale about the "Jersey Devil." Other essays cover assigned topics such as the work of Shakespeare, Dickens, Browning, Shaw and Lytton Strachey, or the causes of the War of Independence.

Event programs point to some of Hutchinson's pursuits between 1940 and 1942—church services, theatrical productions, a debutante ball, a museum exhibit. Ephemera include items such as membership cards, game tickets, and railroad schedules from the early 1930s through 1944, as well as playing cards, a pen nib, and advertisements. Also included in Series 3 are printed programs from the Lawrenceville School (for commencement 1938 and 1939, for instance), as well as printed materials from the Army, such as the booklet "The Construction of Models for Protective Concealment" (1942) and a Field Artillery School Instruction Memorandum (1942).

Football, Oldies, circa 1902-1965

Included are images of the old field, a photograph of the team after the 1903 Princeton-Yale game and holding the game ball, and photographs of the team playing various opponents in any kind of weather. Also in the folder is an image of the campus gathered around the bonfire, a tradition that signifies the team has beat both Harvard and Yale that season, as well as as a picture of dorm buildings with "Hate Yale" on the roof.

The study of biology began at the College of New Jersey with the appointment in 1830 of botanist John Torrey into a part-time faculty position; it expanded with the formation of the School of Science in the 1870s; and was established as a department in 1904. The collection primarily consists of the records of the Department of Biology assembled during the tenures of Department Chairmen Edwin G. Conklin and Elmer Butler. Included are correspondence, general subject files, and records pertaining to grants, research endowments, publications, and administrative matters such as budgets and staffing. Series 1, Subseries 1: Bylaws and Minutes, 1941-1994, contains two distinct sets of minutes: the Board of Trustees meetings and the Executive Committee meetings. In accordance with the bylaws, the board was to meet at least once every three months exclusive of July and August. From 1970 on, this requirement was met or exceeded. However, prior to1970 meetings seem to have occurred once in the winter, usually in February, and once in the fall, usually in October. Where extant, notices and agendas are included with the minutes. The content of the minutes can be broken down into two parts. One part concerns the everyday administrative operations of Freedom House such as nominating new board members, discussing fund raising, reviewing committee work, deciding who would receive the Freedom Award, as well as the mundane tasks of managing the upkeep of the Willkie Memorial Building. The other material in the minutes concerns policy matters. Recorded here are board member discussions related to current events, such as the nuclear test ban treaty, the war in Vietnam, and, in general, dialogue regarding American foreign policy.

Series 1, Correspondence, 1943-1996, arranged alphabetically, contains a great deal of thank-you notes and other routine letters that he mailed out to each of his international contacts when appropriate. Very little correspondence exists from Colby's early career, although there are a few personal letters that can be found in the Colby family folder. This folder includes V-Mail that Colby's father, Colonel Elbridge Colby, sent to his wife while he was stationed in Europe during World War II. The majority of the correspondence is post-1976. As a public figure, politicians and other important figures often contacted Colby. Letters from noteworthy individuals include: Stephen Ambrose, Les Aspin, William Bundy, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, William Casey, William Donovan, Gerald Ford, Robert Gates, John Glenn, Lyndon Johnson, Ted Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, George McGovern, Dan Rather, Carl Sagan, and Stansfield Turner.

Herzig's widow, Helene Phillips Herzig, edited the book, which was published in 2011.

The Meeting Minutes series contains the meeting minutes of the Ladies Auxiliary. Included are annual meetings of the entire body, more frequent but less well-attended regular meetings, and executive board meetings. Each set of minutes notes the type of meeting, and contains the date of the meeting, its location, a list of attendees, and issues discussed or voted upon. Until 1915 the minutes are handwritten in bound ledgers by the Ladies Auxiliary Secretary.

Martha Gellhorn Letters to George Brown, 1941 October 18-1946 December 28

Consists of thirteen typed letters and one autograph letter from Martha Gellhorn to George Brown, Gellhorn and Hemingway's personal trainer, tennis partner, and close friend. The letters are addressed to George Brown (often referred to as "Flash") at his residence in New York City and are written primarily from Finca Vigía, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, and Sun Valley, Idaho, with a single 1943 letter on White House stationery addressed from Washington, D.C., and one 1946 letter addressed from South Easton Place in London following Gellhorn and Hemingway's divorce. Gellhorn's letters, which she often signed "Marty," are playful and informal in nature and offer a glimpse into Gellhorn and Hemingway's marriage. Their primary topic is Gellhorn's concern over her and her husband's physical condition and weight, soliciting exercises and weight loss advice from Brown and making jokes about the couple's physical condition and eating and drinking habits. Letters also often refer to errands Brown ran for Gellhorn and Hemingway in New York during the couple's time in the American West and abroad. Gellhorn occasionally mentions her travel plans as a war correspondent for Collier's, and in one letter, suggests Brown attend her 1946 play Love Goes to Press at the Biltmore Theatre in New York. Her letters regarding her domestic life with Hemingway refer to travel plans, tennis, hunting and fishing in Idaho, Hemingway's cats and pigeons at Finca Vigía, and rumors in the press about Hemingway having an affair, which Gellhorn dismisses. She also refers fondly to Hemingway's sons as "Bumby," "Mousie," and "Giggy" and comments on their activities.

Consists of a set of dog tags, fifteen pins, and a cloth badge from Gellhorn's career as a war correspondent, primarily from the Spanish Civil War and World War II, including dog tags from her time as a war correspondent for Collier's Magazine during World War II, which are embossed "Martha G. Hemingway / War Correspondent / Colliers Magazine;" her United States War Correspondent's badge; a "¡No pasarán!" pin from the Spanish Civil War; a United States Armed Forces Parachutist Badge with four stars affixed to it; along with other pins and military pips from Great Britain, the Middle East, and Russia.

Albert Mathias Friend Papers, 1913-1955

Albert Mathias Friend, Jr. (Princeton Class of 1915), was an officer and a scholar. Friend served in World War I and then did his graduate studies in art and architecture in Europe, studying and salvaging the great works of art and architecture that may have been damaged by the fighting. He then worked with Harvard's Dumbarton Oaks Research Library before becoming a professor at Princeton University. The collection contains notes and course materials from Friend's time as a student and as a professor, correspondence, and some of his research materials, photographs, and negatives, focusing on medieval art and architecture in Greece, Rome, and other Mediterranean cultures.
