Series 2: Incoming Correspondence, 1026-2937

This series includes some 10,000 letters, telegrams, postcards and other communications received by Russell and his immediate associates over the years 1897 to 1956. The letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent, with corporate entries and cross reference cards as described for the outgoing correspondence. Russell's colleagues often sought his opinion of their work, and some 175 manuscripts are interspersed with the incoming letters. Folders of correspondence which contain one or more manuscripts are labeled on the right side "Manuscript enclosed with correspondence". At the same time, there is a 3 x 5 yellow card for each manuscript which lists its author, title, length, date, and location. The yellow cards are arranged alphabetically by author in a file stored in the manuscripts catalogue.

The Microfilm Subseries contains correspondence, documents, newspapers, and writings of Wilson and others which had been microfilmed by various repositories and purchased by the editorial staff for reference and inclusion in the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Project. Repositories from which significant amounts of reels were purchased include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the London Public Records Office, Princeton University, and Yale University. This subseries is closely related to Subseries 1C: Miscellaneous Photocopies, in that similar types of materials are included in both subseries, although there is little or no overlapping content.

Granville Austin (1927-2014) was an independent scholar and political historian known for his work on India's constitution. The Biographical series contains materials regarding Baker's career and life and includes articles, interviews and oral histories, his diaries, awards and appointments, family correspondence, photographs, and weekly schedules for his retirement years. The articles include papers written by and about Baker regarding his life, as well as materials collected by A. Michael Noll on three CDs. The earlier diaries include references to his research at Bell Labs, while diaries beginning in the 1950s are predominantly concerned with his daily life. The awards and appointments materials include awards certificates, correspondence about accepted the awards and congratulations, his acceptance speeches, programs, and articles. Most awards are from academic and professional organizations or corporations for his contributions to science, from government agencies for his service, and honorary degrees from universities. The photographs include portraits of Baker, Baker receiving awards, at events, or with members of boards he served on, and personal photographs of unidentified people and landscapes. The weekly schedules record meetings and events that Baker attended, and also include correspondence about the events, itineraries, and expenses.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1942-2012

The letters in Series 1: Correspondence are primarily personal in nature, though some business correspondence is also included. Most of the correspondence dates from the Birds' time living in the Middle East and India in the 1960s and 1970s, though there are also letters that predate and postdate Eugene's tenure with the Foreign Service. In addition to the Birds' outgoing letters describing their lives to family and friends, the series also contains a large portion of letters that the Birds received from their children and from other Foreign Service families.

Series 5, Dillard University and Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts, 2005-2016

This series consists of records--created primarily by Karen Jezierny, Director of Public Affairs—in both paper and digital formats pertaining to Dillard University Relief Efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Jezierny chiefly led Princeton's role in the partnership with Dillard University, a historically black college or university (HBCU) in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brown University, led at the time by former Princeton professor and dean Ruth Simmons, was initially involved in the relief effort as well. These records provide initial information as the effort began as well as ongoing efforts including speeches and press releases containing updates throughout the process. Also included are the visit agenda and itinerary for Marvalene Hughes, President of Dillard University, to Princeton's campus. All of these records were used by Karen Jezierny as she supported and led the initiative.

Subseries 1A: Complete and Final Minutes of Faculty Meetings, 1781-2010

The Complete and Final Minutes subseries groups together the faculty minutes in their bound, final form. The eighteenth and nineteenth century minutes consist mostly of entries written carefully in minutes books; the minutes from the twentieth century to the present also include printed reports and documents from various committees. Minutes from the later half of the twentieth century to the present include an agenda for the next meeting. Beginning in 1968 and ending in 1984, abstracts (or summaries) were created in the interest of transparency. These abstracts form subseries 1B and, from June 1970 to June 1984, are not restricted. Since 1984, the clerk of the faculty no longer wrote up an abstract in addition to minutes, and simply wrote abstracts as if they were the actual minutes. For this reason, the minutes of the faculty from 1984 to the present are not restricted. Clerks of the faculty changed frequently, and they each put their own stamp on the format and content of the minutes.

Series 1: Records of Men consist of records of individual Princeton University students who served in the military from the Class of 1943 through the Class of 1949. There are single cards for each individual on which is noted biographical information, military rank, home address, service address, and other related information. There are also folders for individuals which include correspondence between Princeton University faculty and staff of the War Service Bureau office, as well as other materials relating to that student's class. For the Class of 1943 there are only cards, but for the Class of 1944 through 1949 there are individual folders for most men. The records are arranged chronologically by class, and alphabetically within each class. In general, the cards appear at the beginning of the chronological run.

The American Whig-Cliosophic Society (1941-present) is a literary, political and debating society which has had an important impact on the lives of generations of Princeton students. It provides students with both social alternatives and an opportunity to develop skills not emphasized by the University curriculum. The contents of the initial group of records were acquired between 1941 and 1993 in agreements between Princeton University and the American Whig-Cliosophic Society. The library initially cataloged some of these records into the P Collection. Subsequently, an attempt was made to organize some of these records in 1975.

The Debate Panel is Princeton University's intercollegiate debating team. The series contains the Panel's correspondence dealing with its competitions against teams from other American colleges and universities as well as activity reports and internal administrative material. Activity reports collect the results and social activities of the panel at all of the tournaments the members attended during a particular academic year; after 1968 these activity reports are called Style Reports. Series 2: Princeton University, 1962-2009

The Princeton University series consists of documentation related to the University and the surrounding community, particularly during his time as administrator in the 1960s (although later material is also represented). This includes general correspondence, a large amount of clippings, promotional material and handwritten notes related to Fields's posthumously-publised book, Black in Two Worlds: A Personal Perspective on Higher Education, and material related to early African American organizations on campus and Fields's efforts at increasing minority admissions. This series does not include a significant amount of official administrative correspondence or institutional documentation. The series does contain material on Fields's involvement as Treasurer in the Association of Black Princeton Alumni, including conference preparatory material and programs, membership lists, correspondence, newsletters, and reports. There is also documentation related to Fields after his direct involvement in the organization, including scholarships named in his honor.
