The Department of Oriental Studies was formed at Princeton University in the spring of 1927 as the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature. It offered an interdisciplinary curriculum centered on the study of the Arabic, Turkish, and Persian languages and the regions in which they were spoken until 1969, when it was reorganized into the separate Departments of Near Eastern Studies and East Asian Studies. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, printed materials, course syllabi, and other materials which document the activities of the department and it's faculty inside and outside of the classroom.

Typescript of "The Negro in the Western World Theatre" by Randolph Edmonds, circa late 1940s

A typescript of an unpublished book, Randolph Edmond's "definitive history of the Negro in the theatre." In the brief Acknowledgements section, Edmonds references a grant-in-aid by a Research Committee at Florida A College where he was teaching. A Forward was to have been written by Allardyce Nicoll, then a Professor of the History of Drama at the University of Birmingham in England. Some of the chapters include, "White Playwrights and Negro Characters," "White Actors in Blackface," "The Negroes Own Efforts," "Negro Stereotypes," "Negro Bands and Jazz," "The Negro Little Theatre Movement," and other chapters on radio, motion pictures, and music and dance in theatre.

Violette Leduc Manuscript Draft of "Je hais les dormeurs", circa 1948

Consists of a handwritten draft of Violette Leduc's "Je hais les dormeurs," which was first published in the journal L'Arbalète in 1948 and later in a heavily condensed version at the end of her novel Ravages (1955). The first twenty-three pages contain the entire text and are numbered and signed on the last page. The draft also includes a dedication to Jean Genet, a note mentioning Marc Barbezat (editor of L'Arbalète), typographer's notes, and corrections. Four additional pages are also present, the numbering of which resumes on page twenty-six. These offer a modified version of the end of the story. Leduc's signature appears on the last page accompanied by the note "bon à tirer" ("ready to print.")

Byron Coroneos press photographs of Haiti, circa 1946-1955

Consists of 32 silver prints of Haitians just after the Haitian Revolution of 1946 and into the 1950s. The photographs include images of agricultural and artisanal work, marketplaces, and the streets of Port-au-Prince during the Mardi Gras Carnival. Many of the photographs include captions that document the subject matter and location of the image.

The files include correspondence, case files, office publications, research files, and the papers of individual staff members. Félix Candela was an influential Spanish-born architect and structural engineer, known for his innovative designs using reinforced thin-shell concrete to create the highly efficient hyperbolic parabaloid shapes used in his construction of many well-known churches, factories, and other buildings, primarily in and around Mexico City in the mid-20th century. The collection consists of professional and personal papers, including photographic files documenting his projects, architectural drawings and designs, drafts of lectures and published papers, correspondence, appointment books, student notebooks and artwork, personal photographs and albums, awards and certificates, architectural reference books and magazines, construction materials catalogs, and clippings on various architecture and design topics and on Candela's own work.

The Robert F. Goheen Papers contain records that Robert F. Goheen kept mainly before and after he was president of Princeton University (1957-1972). They include files Goheen kept as a graduate student, instructor and professor in Princeton University's Department of Classics for the period 1939-1957. The collection also contains U.S. army records for 1942-1945, when Goheen had interrupted his studies for service in the Second World War, and for 1945-1956, when he served in the Officers Reserve Corps. The majority of the files concern Goheen's post-presidential years, when he was Chair of the Council on Foundations (1972-1977), Ambassador to India (1977-1980), and Director of the Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities (1981-1998), as well as Senior Fellow Public and International Affairs at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School. In addition, the collection contains some speech notes Goheen kept and some photographs of Goheen from his tenure as President of Princeton University.

Anton Tedesko (1903-1994) was a German-born American structural engineer, best known for his extensive work in reinforced thin-shell concrete design, often on significant industrial, institutional, and government construction projects, largely in the United States during World War II and the Cold War. The papers consist of Tedesko's writings, correspondence, calculations, engineering drawings and designs, personal papers, photographs, reference materials and technical journals, along with some film reels and glass lantern slides, including materials from his time at the Dyckerhoff & Widmann and Roberts & Schaefer firms, representing his professional work and activities from the 1920s through the 1990s.

He was especially involved with efforts to establish world peace after World War I, the role of the United States in world governance, and Cold War relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Dulles papers document his entire public career and his influence on the formation of United States foreign policy, especially for the period when he was Secretary of State, and include his correspondence files, as well as his writings, reports, and memorabilia.

The collection consists mainly of playbills, photographs, and clippings of press announcements and reviews of the University Players, a youthful group of Princetonians aspiring toward careers in the performing arts. Not entirely comprised of Princeton alumni and undergraduates, however, the organization provided experience and training for many hopefuls who have in fact succeeded in that goal. Taking its name from an earlier group with the same ambitions and who also made great contributions to American theatre and film, it provided the Princeton community with some exciting and meritorious summer theatre for more than a decade.
