The Lloyd E. Cotsen Papers consist of papers and personal items of Lloyd Cotsen's related to his time as an executive at Neutrogena Corporation, his art and book collection practices, his philanthropic contributions, his archaeological interests, and photographs shot by Cotsen. Items related to the production of Cotsen Occasional Press publications are also included. Material dates from 1949 to 2021.

Materials included are related to Cotsen's time working at Neutrogena. Items include Cotsen's personal and business effects, photo albums, Neutrogena souvenirs and ephemera, awards and certificates given to Cotsen, and video cassettes related to the business. Material also includes documents related to Cotsen's contributions to Neutrogena's art collections and exhibitions as well as inventories of art stored at the Neutrogena offices (including documents related to art that Cotsen bought from Nuetrogena and added to his private collection after Johnson and Johnson bought Nuetrogrena in 1994).

This collection contains correspondence, speeches, lecture notes, writings, and photographs of Edward S. Corwin, a noted constitutional scholar who taught at Princeton University for much of his academic career. Nationally-known and widely published, Corwin consulted with many other academics as well as politicians involved with constitutional issues, most notably when he publicly supported Franklin D. Roosevelt's Supreme Court reorganization ("court packing") plan.

Series 1, Biographical Data, 1865-1961, contains personal information regarding Corwin's retirement, finances, and appointments, honors and awards. This series also contains bibliographies listing Corwin's works.

The Julio Cortázar Papers consists of the manuscripts, notes, and notebooks of the Argentine novelist and short story writer Julio Cortázar (1914-1984). These papers primarily contain unpublished prose and poetry, as well as some manuscripts of published materials. Though Cortázar is not generally thought of as a poet, poetry is heavily represented in the collection, including a notebook of poems he wrote at the age of 12 (1927). There are also Spanish translations of some of Jean Cocteau's poetry, and lecture notes from two courses that Cortázar taught. Furthermore, the papers contain a small selection of quotations collected from the work of others, and notebooks that include an assortment of prose, poetry, and notes.

This subseries consists of both fiction and non-fiction prose manuscripts. The majority of the manuscripts are unpublished, but the collection includes the following published works (complete unless otherwise indicated): Adiós, Robinson y otras piezas breves (1995) [two short plays], Los autonautas de la cosmopista: O, un viaje atemporal París-Marsella (1983), Diario de Andrés Fava (1995), El examen (1986), Rayuela (1963) [notes and short manuscript excerpts] and Teoría del túnel (1947). Many of the items, some with titles or otherwise identifiable as individual manuscripts, have been separated from a large miscellaneous folder. For items filed together in one folder, see the reference to the alternate folder. Furthermore, there is a small selection of quotations that Cortázar collected from the works of others, as well as miscellanea that include writing notes.

This subseries consists of lecture notes from two courses that Cortázar taught, one on French literature at Universidad de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina (1945), and the other on contemporary Latin American narrative and Cortázar's work at University of California, Berkeley (1980).

John "Judge" Cobb Cooper (1887-1967) was a Princeton University graduate and a pioneer in the field of Aerospace Law. The collection is composed of correspondence and other materials pertaining to Cooper's activities as Curator of Class Records and as an active member of the Friends of the Library and the Graduate Council.

Ananda K. Coomaraswamy was a noted art historian and champion of Ceylonese and Indian culture. This collection covers a broad spectrum of Ananda K. Coomaraswamy's work in the fields of art history, philosophy, religion, and social criticism.

The Stella Bloch Papers Relating to Ananda K. Coomaraswamy consists of manuscripts, correspondence, drawings, photographs, printed material, and postcards of the American dance critic, art historian, and artist Stella Bloch (1898-1999). This collection documents the relationship between Bloch and the Anglo-Indian art historian, philosopher, and author Ananda K. Coomaraswamy (1877-1947) who embodied the roles of mentor, husband, and friend. The papers primarily contain correspondence by Coomaraswamy to Bloch, as well as a small amount of other letters. Writing was a vital form of communication for Coomaraswamy and Bloch, especially during their marriage, since they always resided in different cities; he lived in Boston while she lived in New York. There are also drawings by Coomaraswamy and by Bloch, as well as photographs-some taken by Coomaraswamy-that include portraits and assorted images from their travels to India and Southeast Asia. The articles in both manuscript and printed form provide a sampling of Coomaraswamy and Bloch's writings on art, religion, and philosophy. Furthermore, there is a small selection of printed material about Coomaraswamy and Bloch, and a series of memento postcards.

This subseries consists of both pen-and-ink and pencil drawings, as well as three prints and one tracing. The primary subject is female figures, but there are also two portraits and a small selection of miscellaneous drawings. Three drawings, "Relaxation," "Memory," and "Extension" [circa1919-1920], were published in Twenty-eight Drawings [see also Box 7, Folder 1]. Furthermore, this subseries contains three prints of drawings of Bloch. This subseries is organized by subject and then by medium, with miscellaneous material located at the end.

This collection contains the musical manuscripts, musical sketches, and personal papers of Edward T. Cone, a composer and member of the Princeton University faculty.

This collection, which consists primarily of correspondence but also includes diaries, official and legal documents, ephemera, and photographs, largely relates to Samuel Comfort (1837-1923), a U.S. Civil War veteran, diplomat, inventor, and foreign representative for the Standard Oil Company in Europe and India. Documentation of Comfort's Civil War experience is particularly robust. To a lesser extent, the collection documents the family of Comfort's daughter Emma Walraven Comfort (1869-1954) and her husband, Harry Maule Crookshank (1948-1914), a distinguished physician who served as British Controller-General of the Daira Sanieh Administration in Egypt from 1897 to 1907. British Conservative politician Harry Frederick Comfort Crookshank (1893-1961) as well as several other members of the Comfort family, particularly Samuel's father, George Comfort (1808 -1887), are also represented.

This subseries includes newspaper clippings, writings, genealogy materials, and various types of ephemera, such as notes, programs, souvenirs, broadsides, and a few pamphlets and printed items. A few items relate to other Comfort family members.

Varnum Lansing Collins was a Princeton alum of the Class of 1893 and served as the University's Secretary from 1917 to 1936. Throughout his life Collins exhibited a special interest in Princeton's history and he authored a number of works relating to that theme. The Varnum Lansing Collins Papers consist primarily of materials generated by Collins while writing several of his most well-known works on Princeton history.

Consists of notebooks and notes taken by George R. Collins during his years as an undergraduate and graduate student at Princeton (Classes of 1939, 1942) in the fields of art and architecture.

The collection consists of twenty-four audiocassette recorded interviews conducted by Thomas Colchie (Princeton University alumnus, Class of 1964) of or about Brazilian writer Jorge Amado. Recordings include interviews with Jorge Amado and other writers and artists speaking about Amado. Also includes photocopy documents about Amado's political involvement as an elected representative in Brazil's National Constituent Assembly from 1945-1947, and photocopy documents of Brazil's National Intelligence Service (SNI) file on Amado.

In 1945, Jorge was elected to the National Constituent Assembly as a representative of the Brazilian Communist Party (Partido Comunista Brasileiro, PCB). As a representative, Amado introduced a law guaranteeing freedom of religious faith. In 1947, the Communist Party was declared illegal in Brazil, and its members were persecuted and imprisoned, which led Amado to go into exile to Europe from 1947-1954.

William E. Colby, Princeton University Class of 1940, was a career agent in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Director of Central Intelligence from 1973-1976. However, the bulk of the collection documents his post-CIA career and contains correspondence, speeches, writings, newspaper clippings, and subject files that reflect Colby's professional and private interests.

Series 1, Correspondence, 1943-1996, arranged alphabetically, contains a great deal of thank-you notes and other routine letters that he mailed out to each of his international contacts when appropriate. Very little correspondence exists from Colby's early career, although there are a few personal letters that can be found in the Colby family folder. This folder includes V-Mail that Colby's father, Colonel Elbridge Colby, sent to his wife while he was stationed in Europe during World War II. The majority of the correspondence is post-1976. As a public figure, politicians and other important figures often contacted Colby. Letters from noteworthy individuals include: Stephen Ambrose, Les Aspin, William Bundy, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, William Casey, William Donovan, Gerald Ford, Robert Gates, John Glenn, Lyndon Johnson, Ted Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, George McGovern, Dan Rather, Carl Sagan, and Stansfield Turner.

Contains approximately 175 letters by Sir Sydney Carlyle Cockerell, written after Cockerell's retirement as director (1908-1937) of the Fitzwilliam Museum, to Janet Troxell, an American collector of manuscripts, discussing, in part, William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the Kelmscott Press, and Cockerell's rare book and manuscript collections.

Professor Ansley J. Coale (1917-2002) was a demographer whose work focused on nuptiality, fertility, and mortality in several countries. Coale joined the Princeton University faculty in 1947 and spent his entire career as a member of the university's Office of Population Research (OPR). The papers contain correspondence, Coale's research papers and projects, and samples of data collected. The material spans the several decades (1950s to 1990s) Coale spent as a member of the Princeton faculty, as well as the work he did during his retirement.

The Biographical series primarily comprises drafts of Coale's autobiography, published in 1995. Other items include press clippings related to Coale and his family, Coale's Curriculum Vitae, the text of an interview of Coale, records of his extensive travels around the world for demographic studies, and personal correspondence. During World War I, Gilbert Fairchild Close held several positions in the government of President Woodrow Wilson, culminating with that of Stenographer and Private Secretary to the President. The papers document Close's work with Wilson, including the trip Close took to Europe with Wilson for the Paris Peace Conference at the conclusion of World War I.

Harlan Cleveland (1918-2008) was a public administrator, ambassador to NATO, and a political scientist. He served in several positions related to the administration of economic aid programs during the 1940s, as an assistant secretary in the State Department and as U.S. ambassador to NATO during the 1960s, and also held positions at three universities and the Aspen Institute. Cleveland's papers document his government service and his work at the Aspen Institute, and include his speech and writings files, as well as correspondence and photographs.

Consists of selected correspondence, photographs, and printed material of the American poet Gertrude Claytor, some of which is related to the author Edgar Lee Masters.

The Robert Judson Clark Papers consist of records pertaining to the architecture and grounds of Princeton University's campus and the surrounding area, compiled by professor emeritus Robert Judson Clark of the Princeton University Department of Art and Archaeology.

The U.S.S. Princeton [C.V.L.-23] Collection, located in the University Archives, contains research materials for the book, Carrier Down, by Marcia Clark in which the history of the U.S.S. Princeton is chronicled.

Kenneth Sherman Clark was a member of the Princeton Class of 1905 and an active participant in Triangle Club during his time at Princeton. Consists of the personal papers and sheet music of Kenneth Sherman Clark spanning his time at Princeton as well as his later career.

Series 2: General, 1917-1950 contains biographical information, photographs, scrapbooks, and documents other than correspondence.

Consists of postcard correspondence, photographs, blank postcards, and some ephemera and small paintings collected and received by Elizabeth Dodge Clarke during her time in Istanbul, Turkey and after her return to the United States.

Consists of postcards and cards sent to Elizabeth Dodge Clarke from Turkey and the Middle East. Many of the cards are Christmas and New Year's greetings. Others discuss reminiscences of Clarke's time in Istanbul or updates on the correspondents' lives. Some postcards feature photos of the correspondents and about half of the cards are undated.

Photographs, postcards, and a scrapbook depicting sites, landscapes, and people of Istanbul. The scrapbook contains photographs of street vendors in Istanbul and the musical notation of their chants; it was compiled by Edgar Fisher, Jr., the son of the dean of Robert College. Also includes a 1956 pamphlet about the Kariye Mosque, of which there are several photographs, and a small, signed handpainted card of a view of Istanbul.

Blair Clark was a journalist and political activist who held many positions in both spheres. His papers contain items related to his employment with CBS News, his role in the establishment of the Edward R. Murrow Chair at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, and personal correspondence.

The Alonzo Church Papers consists of the writings, correspondence, notebooks, notes, and subject files of Alonzo Church (1903-1995, Princeton Class of 1924), the renowned mathematical logician who taught at Princeton University from 1929-1967 and the University of California at Los Angeles from 1967 to 1990, and who was editor of the Journal of Symbolic Logic from 1936 to 1979.

Consists of papers published between 1924-1951.

Consists of an open collection for Maria Chrousakē photographs of several places in Greece and Cyprus mostly Byzantine churches and monasteries and archaeological sites.

Gilbert Chinard was a Franco-American scholar who taught at Princeton University and was affiliated with the Institut Français de Washington. The organization, established in 1926 to promote the study of French civilization and culture, endeavors to recognize the French influence in North American culture. The collection houses documents and letters concerning the Institution and an autograph manuscript of James Dunn Hufman's translation of Andre Lasseray's Les Français Sous Les Trieze Etoiles.

Correspondence is mainly academic and related to publishing concerns. Notable correspondents include Jacques Maritain, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Henri Peyre.

Consists of records of German political and social organizations collected by Childs and articles written by him relating to the political and social climate of the time.

Consists of selected papers of Edward T. Chase (1919-2005) including correspondence, manuscripts and other documents relating to Chase's professional career as a book editor at several New York publishing companies spanning the years 1972-1995.

This series consists of various items mostly relating to Chase's family connections to the artist's colony in Woodstock, New York.

This collection consists of virtually all of the surviving records of Scribners (1846-1984), the New York City publisher, and reflect aspects of all of its publishing functions (soliciting and acquiring books, editing manuscripts, printing and manufacturing books, advertising and publicizing publications) and business concerns (book and magazine publisher, retail bookstore, subscription books department, educational books department, printing press and bindery, rare books department). Included are files of editorial correspondence with authors, manufacturing records about book production, advertising records, author contracts, a collection of dust jackets, book catalogs, ledgers, and photographs. While there are gaps in most of the series or record groups, there are records representative of all of the firm's former permutations: Baker & Scribner, Charles Scribner & Co., Scribner, Armstrong & Co., Scribner, Armstrong & Welford, Scribner & Co., Charles Scribner's Sons. The bulk of the material (1880s-1970s), however, dates from the period when the publisher bore its most familiar name, "Charles Scribner's Sons." There is also material related to early publishers' organizations and international copyright.

Louise Dorothee (Dollie) Dyte Chareau (1880-1967) was the wife of the architect Pierre Chareau (1883-1950), who is best known for the Maison de Verre, which was built from 1927 to 1932 in Paris. This collection consists mainly of correspondence between Harold Rubinstein (1891-1975) and Dollie Chareau, and between Michael Rubenstein (1920-2001) and Pierre Chareau scholars, including Marc Vellay, Margaret Antalopoulos, and Margaret Tallet.

Francis Catlin was a member of the Princeton University Class of 1947. The collection contains materials distributed at the 1947 Bicentennial Convocation celebrating Princeton University's 200th anniversary.

Consists primarily of correspondence relating to the work of Carver (Princeton Class of 1913) as secretary (1914-1915) to Walter H. Page, the American ambassador in London, as secretary (1915) to Edward Mandell House in Europe, and as assistant to Bernard M. Baruch working for the War Industries Board, and to his commission in the U.S. Navy attached to the Office of Naval Intelligence (1917-1918).

Consists of papers of journalist Levering Cartwright (Princeton University Class of 1926) relating to the association of "Death Valley Scotty" (Walter Scott, 1872-1954), an eccentric prospector, Wild West show entertainer, and hoaxer, with his friend and financier, Albert M. Johnson, an insurance company executive.

Consists of papers of Hereward Carrington, a British spiritualist and investigator of psychic phenomena, including correspondence with other notable figures in his field, photographs of mediums and psychic phenomena, several manuscripts, and two diaries.

Consists of correspondence between Carrington and a variety of notable spiritualists, psychic researchers, and others.

Virginia Card is a Native American of Delaware and Creek descent. Consists of correspondence, writings, subject files, photographs, and audio-visual material. The collection is especially noteworthy for Virginia Card's extensive documentation of the activities of Native American communities in California.

Hadley Cantril was a psychologist who studied propaganda and public opinion research. The collection includes bound Hadley Cantril Diaries, poll results and reports on Polls During World War II, correspondence, and other reports.

Félix Candela was an influential Spanish-born architect and structural engineer, known for his innovative designs using reinforced thin-shell concrete to create the highly efficient hyperbolic parabaloid shapes used in his construction of many well-known churches, factories, and other buildings, primarily in and around Mexico City in the mid-20th century. The collection consists of professional and personal papers, including photographic files documenting his projects, architectural drawings and designs, drafts of lectures and published papers, correspondence, appointment books, student notebooks and artwork, personal photographs and albums, awards and certificates, architectural reference books and magazines, construction materials catalogs, and clippings on various architecture and design topics and on Candela's own work.

This subseries contains photographs, negatives, transparencies, architectural drawings and reproductions, sketches, and calculations, along with occasional project files, notes, and correspondence regarding a wide range of Félix Candela's building and design projects. Files on specific building projects are organized into twelve conceptual categories based on a topic, generally a specific architectural feature or theme, following their original organizational logic. Rather than providing complete project files, these files primarily visually document finished projects and projects under construction. Contents are mainly photographic in nature, accompanied by architectural drawings for some projects, and less often, paper files. Accordingly, materials in individual files are primarily photographic, unless otherwise noted at the file level.

Includes microfilm copies of many articles from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

Bernardo Canal Jeijóo was a lawyer and poet in Argentina during the twentieth century. His correspondence consists of letters with other writers and artists about both the arts and everyday life.

Charles Lawton Campbell (Princeton Class of 1916) was an American playwright and advertising writer. His collection contains ninety-four drafts, fragments, and fully-conceived plays, as well as poems, essays, and an autobiography covering fifty years of his life as a devotee of the theater.

William Byler was Executive Director of the Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA) from 1962 to 1980. After leaving AAIA, Byler continued advocating for the Native American community, first at Gerard, Byler and Associates and later at William Byler Associates. Byler's papers document his work on behalf of the Native American community after leaving AAIA. The papers include legal memoranda, draft and final agreements between Native American communities and companies or government agencies, and court documents, as well as topical files of related legislation and reports on the issues.

The "Literary Landmarks of Princeton" Exhibition Collection consists of author files and miscellaneous materials related to the "Literary Landmarks of Princeton" exhibition curated by Alfred L. Bush in 1967. The exhibition chronicled works of fiction, drama, and poetry written in Princeton by over 100 authors from the early 18th century to the mid-1960s.

Consists mostly of correspondence along with some financial records, legal documents, such as deeds and land indentures, ephemera, and photographs dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries that relate to Chester W. Burton, a farmer from Chautauqua County, New York, and his family. Among other topics, the collection documents aspects of the Civil War and early settlement and gold mining in the west.

Though primarily correspondence, some documents, such as deeds and indentures, financial papers, such as receipts, invoices, and inventories, are interspersed throughout, especially in earlier correspondence. Also included are a few ephemeral materials as well as writings by various family members, including those of Chester W. Burton and Clarissa Harris, both of whom wrote articles for publication in local newspapers and journals.

The Nathaniel Burt Papers contain materials related to the works of novelist Nathaniel Burt (Princeton Class of 1936), such as Leopards in the Garden (1968), Palaces for the People (1977), The Perennial Philadelphians (1963), and Scotland's Burning (1953), as well as personal correspondence and financial papers about the Burt family property.

Consists of general correspondence, including correspondence with Princeton University.

Struthers Burt was a noted poet, prose writer and rancher in the first half of the twentieth century. The collection includes various copies of some of Burt's own works, correspondence with family and friends from his days at Princeton University, and assorted materials about his family and genealogy.

Consists of tear sheets for fiction, nonfiction, and journal articles written by Struthers Burt.

The Nelson R. Burr Papers consists of works, correspondence, documents, photographs, scrapbooks, juvenilia, and printed matter of American historian, Nelson R. Burr (Princeton Class of 1927). The collection contains materials from his book Education in New Jersey, 1630-1871 (1942), as well as notes, essays and personal correspondence from his undergraduate and graduate school years at Princeton.

Consists of selected correspondence, passports, and calling cards of the Burr family of Philadelphia.

Consists of material relating to the British-born, American author Frances Hodgson Burnett (FHB), collected by her younger son, Vivian Burnett (VB), including manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and artwork.

This subseries consists of condolence letters from friends and acquaintances following the sudden death of VB due to a heart attack as a result of his rescue of four unidentified passengers from a capsized sailboat in Long Island Sound on July 25, 1937.

The Benjamin Franklin Bunn Papers consist of financial, business and administrative records which Bunn maintained for many Princeton clubs and associations during his 50 years at Princeton University. The papers also contain correspondence with many Princeton and Phillips Exeter Academy classmates, Princeton administrators, and family members. The Triangle Club material contains letters from F. Scott Fitzgerald and notable members of stage and screen.

Consists of thirteen notebooks compiled by American biographer Allison Williams Bunkley while in South America doing research for his book The Life of Sarmiento (1952).

Ralph Adams Bullock was a member of the Princeton University class of 1914 and a lifelong Princeton football fan. The Bullock Princeton Football collection consists of publications and clippings pertaining to Princeton University Football.

Series 1: Bullock Princeton Football Collection, 1947-1963 consists of publications and clippings pertaining to Princeton University Football. Frequent sources include Princeton Athletic News, The Daily Princetonian, and the New York Times.

Joseph Bryan was an author and editor who worked with many prominent magazines and published several novels in the first half of the twentieth century. This collection contains letters to Bryan from his friends H. Allen Smith (about 160 letters, 1954-1976), Frank Sullivan (about 100 letters, 1938-1975), and Finis Farr (about 500 letters, 1935-1981). It also contains page proofs from Merry Gentlemen and a typescript of "Man of Letters: Finis Farr, 1904-1982."

J. Douglas Brown (1898-1986) was an economist and Princeton University administrator who was an expert in the field of industrial relations, especially on the subjects of Social Security and personnel and manpower issues. He was one of the leaders in the development of the Social Security program and also served in the War Department during World War II on manpower issues. Brown's papers document his career as a government consultant, as a scholar, and as a university administrator and include his correspondence and writings, reports, meeting minutes, notes, and publications.

Consists of selected papers of the Frederick T. Brown family, which originated in Ohio but at various times lived in Indiana, Minnesota, and New Jersey.

The Brandt & Brandt Contract Files consists primarily of contract files from Brandt & Brandt, the New York City literary agency, for published works where the rights have reverted to the author. Some represented authors are Margaret Banning, Bessie Brewer, Raymond Chandler, Carlos Fuentes, Arthur Machen, Mary McCarthy, Derek Patmore, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Wallace Stegner. The Fuentes material (1967-1995) is extensive and covers a fuller range of literary agency activities.

David F. Bradford (1939-2005) was a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University and served on the faculty from 1966 to 2005. His main areas of study were public finance and urban problems, and he was internationally known as an expert on taxation. Bradford's papers document his academic career and include correspondence files and conference files, as well as papers related to his research with Harry H. Kelejian, his appointment books, and biographical materials from his years as a student.

Consists of copies of fundamental legal instruments of government (1664-1961) under which people have lived in New Jersey for the last 300 years, gathered by historian, Julian P. Boyd, for the book Fundamental Laws and Constitutions of New Jersey (1964), which he edited.

Consists of works, correspondence, documents, notes, photographs, and printed matter of Julian Boyd, Princeton University Librarian (1940-1952) and professor of history, and the founding editor of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson publishing project.

Heath Bowman was a member of the Princeton University Class of 1931. After graduating, Bowman traveled extensively and later became a public affairs officer involved in Chile, Italy, France, and Yugoslavia. The papers consist of Bowman's 68 diaries from 1923 to 1989 and some of his photographs from the West Indies and South America.

Brooks Bowman '36 is best remembered as the composer of the songs "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)" and "Love and a Dime." The Brooks Bowman Papers consist of correspondence and photographs that document his school years and his foray into the music industry. The bulk of the papers consist of Bowman's correspondence with his mother, sister, and numerous friends.

The Correspondence series primarily documents Bowman's childhood and young adulthood, from his stay as a boy at a sanitarium in Kansas City for diabetes treatment through his years at Stanford and Princeton. Correspondence between Bowman and his mother, Mary Augusta Brooks Bowman, is particularly rich in part because they wrote each other almost daily and in great detail. Bowman's letters to his mother from Stanford and Princeton, in particular, are lively and quick-witted and reveal his myriad social activities, impressions of college life, and opinions on subjects of all sorts, from family matters to politics to popular films and actors. Correspondence with his father, sister, and brother can be equally revealing but does not match the sheer volume of correspondence between mother and son. Letters from Bowman's friends are also worth noting for their vivid evocations of private school and college life in the 1920s and 1930s. Bowman corresponded with several young women, including a cousin, Edith Brooks, who was traveling in the car with Bowman at the time he was killed. The young women's letters, in particular, contain a vivaciousness and convey their own and Bowman's very active social lives. Bowman also maintained a correspondence over many years with a member of the crew he met on a Cunard Lines voyage he took as a boy with his family. The crew member sent Bowman many letters and postcards from his voyages around the world.

Harold Gardiner Bowen was director of the Naval Research Laboratory (1939-1942), special assistant to the Secretary of the Navy (1939-1947), chief of the Office of Naval Research (1946-1947), and executive secretary of the Thomas Alva Edison Foundation. This collection consists of selected papers of Vice-Admiral Bowen, including speeches, articles, documents, printed matter, and manuscripts for his book Ships, Machinery, and Mossbacks, The Autobiography of a Naval Engineer (Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1954).

Shirley Ecker Boskey was an attorney who served as director of the International Relations Department of the World Bank. The Shirley Ecker Boskey Papers consist of reports, correspondence, meeting minutes, and publications from Boskey's time at the Department of the Interior and at the World Bank.

Founded in 1895, the Booksellers' League of New York was an organization aimed at promoting a professional and collaborative spirit among members of the book trade. The bulk of the collection consists of meeting minutes of the annual meetings and Board of Managers meetings, 1895-1932 (5 vols.) and of materials relating to the League's monthly dinners and other social events, 1901-1958 (invitation cards, programs, menus, handbills, and related membership mailings).

Contains copies of the League's constitutions of 1905, 1942, and 1954 as well as various draft versions. A copy of the 1895 constitution is included in box 1, vol. 4.

John C. Bogle (1929-2019) founded the mutual fund company Vanguard and is a leader in the mutual fund industry. He is an outspoken advocate for low-cost investing, index funds, and the rights of investors, and a critic of the mutual fund industry. Bogle's papers document his career with Vanguard and Wellington Management Company, and his involvement with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, and include his speeches and correspondence, reports, memoranda, and clippings.

Consists primarily of drafts, notes, fragments and final copies of American poet Louise Bogan's critical essays on modern literature, published in prestigious American journals. There are a few poetry manuscripts and even fewer pieces of correspondence.

Consists of the translation of Goethe's Elective Affinities with Elizabeth Mayer.

Consists of copies of diaries kept by Blom and his wife, Gertrude Duby Blom, from 1943 to 1959, while searching for Maya ruins in Chiapas, Mexico, in 14 volumes.

Walker Bleakney was a renowned physicist who served as a Princeton professor of physics (1932-1969) and chairman of the physics department (1960-1967). This collection consists of Bleakney's papers, including published and unpublished reports, drafts of articles, graphic data and photographs of experiments, and other material concerning Bleakney's defense-related research on shock waves at the Princeton Gas Dynamics Laboratory, as well as lecture notes and correspondence.

Richard Palmer Blackmur was a notable literary critic, poet, and Princeton University professor. This collection documents Blackmur's creative and academic efforts, and includes his critical essays, reviews, poetry, short stories, plays, and unpublished novels. In addition to his writings, Blackmur's papers contain significant correspondence with major literary figures of the twentieth century.

Eugene Bird (1925-) is a retired Foreign Service Officer who served primarily in the Middle East. During Eugene Bird's tenure with the State Department, he and his family lived in Jerusalem, Beirut, Cairo, Bombay, New Delhi, and the Saudi Arabian cities of Jeddah and Dhahran. His wife, Jerine "Jerri" Bird (1926-2012), was an activist who started the nonprofit organization Partners for Peace, which sponsored speaking tours by Israeli and Palestinian women throughout the United States. The collection contains Eugene and Jerine Bird's personal and professional correspondence, subject files on the Middle East, and writings, especially pertaining to Jerine Bird's unpublished manuscript on Saudi Arabian women.

The letters in Series 1: Correspondence are primarily personal in nature, though some business correspondence is also included. Most of the correspondence dates from the Birds' time living in the Middle East and India in the 1960s and 1970s, though there are also letters that predate and postdate Eugene's tenure with the Foreign Service. In addition to the Birds' outgoing letters describing their lives to family and friends, the series also contains a large portion of letters that the Birds received from their children and from other Foreign Service families.

The José Bianco Papers consists of notes and correspondence of the Argentine editor, author, and translator José Bianco, as well as a small selection of writings by others and audio recordings of Cuban poets José Lezama Lima and Nicolás Guillén reading their poetry.

The Sarah Bernhardt Collection consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, theater programs and playbills, photographs, and other materials on French actress Sarah Bernhardt.

Correspondence, personal and business files, publicity materials, drafts, photography props, teaching materials, appointment books, and memorabilia of Ruth Bernhard (1905-2006), a German-born American photographer and teacher, active in the United States from the late 1920s through the early 2000s, best known for her complex black-and-white still lifes and classical photographs of the female nude. The papers contain professional correspondence and files, personal correspondence with friends and students, a small amount of photographic work and writings, some drafts and proofs for publications, publicity folios, exhibition catalogs and announcements, posters, props used for still life photography and teaching, planners, and a large collection of memorabilia, including snapshots of Bernhard, collected fine art photographs and artwork by others, photograph albums, gifts, personal effects, awards, and some audio and visual materials.

Tristan E. Beplat (1912-1997) was a New York banking executive with expertise in international banking. He had a significant role in the economic reconstruction of postwar Japan through his work in the Finance Division of the Economic and Scientific Section, General Headquarters, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. Beplat's papers document his service in Japan and include memoranda, papers, and reports on the banks and economy of Japan from 1945 to 1948.

The Personal Papers series contains materials related to Beplat's work for the United States military in Japan. The papers include records of his appointment, paychecks, and permission to travel, his journal from October 1945 when he first arrived in Japan, materials to study the Japanese language, correspondence, photographs, and papers regarding the American Club which he co-founded.

Shakespearean scholar Gerald Eades Bentley was a professor of English at Princeton University (1945-1970) and assistant librarian for Special Collections (1971-1973). His papers consists of notes, typescripts, and galleys for three published works, The Jacobean and Caroline Stage (1941-1968), The Profession of Dramatist in Shakespeare's Time, 1590-1642 (1971), and The Profession of Player in Shakespeare's Time, 1590-1642 (1984), as well as various speeches, articles, and correspondence about his works.

Madison Smartt Bell (1957-) is an American novelist best known for his trilogy of novels about Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution, published between 1995 and 2004. His papers consist of writings, personal and professional correspondence, family documents, memorandum books, printed materials, and subject files, including drafts, galleys, and proofs for his novels, short stories, and other writings.

The Clive Bell Correspondence collection consists of letters received by the English writer and art critic Clive Bell (1881-1964) from Raymond Mortimer, Harold Nicolson, and V. (Victoria) Sackville-West ["Vita"]. Their content reflects both personal and professional matters.

Consists of selected manuscript and typescript drafts, notebooks, and notes, of 20th-century Irish author Brendan Behan (1923-1964), as well as some correspondence and ephemera. The papers constitute the principal archives of the manuscripts of Behan's writings.

The Eugene M. Becker Papers consist primarily of planning documents, position papers, articles, addresses, correspondence, and scrapbooks which document Becker's career in public service as Budget Director of New York City under Mayor John Lindsay; Assistant Secretary of the United States Army during the Johnson and Nixon administrations; and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Mentor Group, a research institute focusing on constitutional, legal-economic comparative studies and sponsor of the Forum for US-EU Legal-Economic Affairs, the Forum for Russian Legal-Economic Affairs, and the Central European Forum for Legal-Economic Affairs.

Series 4, General, 1944-2012 reflects Becker's personal activities. Becker used his financial and analytical skills throughout his career. He created a small file of his position papers, included are documents for the Investment Bankers Association of America, John J. Gilhooley during his bid for New York City Comptroller in 1961, and the Critical Issues Council directed by Milton Eisenhower. Some of these position papers can be found elsewhere in the series, for example the paper on the position of comptroller is found in the portfolio assembled by Becker and within the John Gilhooley correspondence. Other writings in this series include the foreign press reviews from Becker's Army service in the mid-1950s, and a manuscript entitled "Selling Municipal Bonds."

This collection consists of over 400 letters from French writer, philosopher, and feminist theorist Simone de Beauvoir to her mother, Françoise de Beauvoir, and sister, Hélène de Beauvoir (also referred to as Henriette), dating from October 1918 to December 1968.
