Princeton University Student Christian Association Records, 1855-1967

The Student Christian Association and its predecessors were the dominant religious organizations at Princeton University for almost a hundred and fifty years. The Philadelphian Society, founded by a small group of students in 1825, was the quasi-official campus religious agency by the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1930 the Student-Faculty Association (SFA), organized by the Dean of the Chapel, took over the Society's programs, focusing on community service. In 1946 the Student Christian Association (SCA) replaced both the Society and the SFA, coordinating both religious and community service activities in campus. The Student Volunteers Council succeeded the SCA in 1967.

He was involved in a variety of relief efforts during both world wars and their immediate aftermaths, and was the first Executive Director of UNICEF. Includes autograph manuscript drafts of Alaveras's essays, short stories, and poems in Greek. Some of them were kept in a folder entitled "Kampanes. Pezographēmata." Included are: "Hoi Megalexantroi" dated 1947 and published in the magazine Morphes, 9 (January 1947); "Polemikē pezographia" dated 1952; "Ho dromos mas. Se eikones pente pente skēnes" dated 1945; "Narkalieutēs"; "Phantastikes phōnes" dated 1949; "Henas logos me logikē kai chōris logikē" dated 1949; "T'agrimia tou allou dasous" dated 1950; "Hē pneumatikē Thessalonikē tou 1952"; a notebook with a novel entitled " Sta skotadia tēs Tsouka-Rōssa" dated 1952; "Pera apo to sēmeio stērigmatos" dated 1952. Other stories included are: "Moirolatrēs"; "To dentraki" dated 1944; "Ho mastro-Nikolas"; "Hagnē, Hagnoula"; "Gia to Mesolongi"; "To tēlephōno" dated 1944; "Hē emporissa"; and many others. There is also a small notebook dated 1962 and one folder consisting of undated early writings. Additionally, there are issues of the student magazine Pnoē/ 2-3, 6-7, where Alaveras published some of his earliest writings dated 1944-1945.

The MTDC material reflects the decision-making process to change the method of computing indirect costs at Princeton between 1972 and 1974. These include modeling worksheets, indirect costs studies from other universities, financial worksheets, handwritten notes and typed memos, as well as documents on the breakdown of faculty time spent on non-instructional activities between 1976 and 1977.

Harlan Cleveland (1918-2008) was a public administrator, ambassador to NATO, and a political scientist. He served in several positions related to the administration of economic aid programs during the 1940s, as an assistant secretary in the State Department and as U.S. ambassador to NATO during the 1960s, and also held positions at three universities and the Aspen Institute. Cleveland's papers document his government service and his work at the Aspen Institute, and include his speech and writings files, as well as correspondence and photographs.

Harley L. Lutz (1882-1975) was an economist with expertise in taxation and public finance who spent his academic career at Oberlin College, Stanford University, and Princeton University. Lutz also served as an advisor on public finance, especially taxation, to the federal and state governments and was an outspoken opponent of increases in government spending. Lutz's papers document his career as an economist, as well as his work as a consultant on taxation and public finance, and include writings, reports, and correspondence.

The American Civil Liberties Union Records document the activities of the Union in protecting individual rights from 1920 through 1995. The files contain materials on freedom of speech, expression, and association; due process of law; equality before the law; legal case files; and organizational records. Within these categories files reflect subject areas such as academic freedom, censorship, racial discrimination, aliens' rights, privacy concerns, labor concerns, amnesty, and government loyalty and security. The files reflect work on litigation, advocacy and public policy, and subject files on various areas of interest connected with civil liberties. Materials include correspondence, court documents, memoranda, printed matter, minutes, reports, briefs, and legal files. Also included are materials from ACLU affiliate organizations, and the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Committee. Subgroup 2, Series 4 has been digitized and is available for members of the Princeton community to view here.
