Varnum Lansing Collins was a Princeton alum of the Class of 1893 and served as the University's Secretary from 1917 to 1936. Throughout his life Collins exhibited a special interest in Princeton's history and he authored a number of works relating to that theme. The Varnum Lansing Collins Papers consist primarily of materials generated by Collins while writing several of his most well-known works on Princeton history.

The Veterans of Future Wars Collection, consists of materials dating from the organization's parodical foundation as a Princeton-based student movement in 1936 through its eventual petering-out in 1937. The materials beyond the organization's cessation of activities deal with the Veterans of Future Wars' short but emphatic existence. The collection consists primarily of correspondence of the National Council members (all Princeton University undergraduates), the organization's nation-wide Posts, and its various auxiliary support groups. Also included are speeches and debates, press releases, poems, plays and songs written for the organization, photographs of both official and personal nature, and newspaper clippings.

Consists of the British publisher Victor Gollancz's author files on Miguel Ángel Asturias, Edith Sitwell, and Richard Wright.

Consists of nearly 300 letters from Simone de Beauvoir to Violette Leduc documenting their literary friendship spanning four decades, along with 23 notebooks containing manuscript drafts of Leduc's autobiography, La Bâtarde (1964).

Virgilio Pinera (1912-1979) was a Cuban novelist, playwright, and storywriter. The collection consists of his works, including manuscripts of various poems, an unfinished play, theatrical sketches, and prose essay. The collection also contains Piñera's extensive correspondence with Humberto Rodriguez Tomeu (1919-1994), a Cuban short story writer and translator, and Witold Gombrowicz's correspondence with Rodriguez Tomeu.

Virginia Card is a Native American of Delaware and Creek descent. Consists of correspondence, writings, subject files, photographs, and audio-visual material. The collection is especially noteworthy for Virginia Card's extensive documentation of the activities of Native American communities in California.

Princeton's Graduate School, established officially by the Trustees in late 1900, began its operations in the fall of 1901. These records consist of files of incidental students who earned less than a full semester's worth of credits, as well as the records of visiting fellows.

Consists of material relating to the British-born, American author Frances Hodgson Burnett (FHB), collected by her younger son, Vivian Burnett (VB), including manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and artwork.

Consists of manuscripts and correspondence of Welsh writer Arthur Machen collected by Joseph Kelly Vodrey. It also contains an equal amount of manuscripts and correspondence of Machen admirers and collectors, particularly the members of the Machen Society, founded in 1948 after Machen's death.

Papaioannou was born in Lamia and grew up in Athens (Greece). She began working as a photographer during the 1930s, concentrating at first on studies of landscapes, monuments and archaeological exhibits. The outbreak of war in 1940 marked a turning point in her career, as she was intensely affected by the suffering of the civilian population of Athens. Realizing the power of her camera to arouse people's conscience, she documented the troops departing for the front, the preparations for the war effort, and the care received by the first casualties. When the capital was in the grip of starvation, she revealed the horrors of war in her moving photographs of emaciated children. After the liberation, as a member of the photographic unit of UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration), she toured the ravaged Greek countryside recording the difficult living conditions faced by its inhabitants. She often exceeded her brief, immortalizing the faces and personal stories of ordinary people in photographs that stressed dignity rather than suffering. During the 1950s Papaioannou's work expressed the optimism that prevailed in the aftermath of the war with respect to both the future of mankind and the restoration of traditional values. Nevertheless, her photographs of the historic Greek landscape are not in the least romantic, but instead portray it as harsh, barren, drenched in light, and its inhabitants proud and independent, despite their poverty. Voula Papaioannou's work represents the trend towards "humanitarian photography" that resulted from the abuse of human rights during the war. Her camera captured her compatriots' struggle for survival with respect, clarity, and a degree of personal involvement that transcends national boundaries and reinforces one's faith in the strength of the common man and the intrinsic value of human life. Walker Bleakney was a renowned physicist who served as a Princeton professor of physics (1932-1969) and chairman of the physics department (1960-1967). This collection consists of Bleakney's papers, including published and unpublished reports, drafts of articles, graphic data and photographs of experiments, and other material concerning Bleakney's defense-related research on shock waves at the Princeton Gas Dynamics Laboratory, as well as lecture notes and correspondence.

Consists of letters and financial statements received by Walter D. Edmonds from his New York City literary agency, Harold Ober Associates.

Consists primarily of letters by British novelist and poet Walter De la Mare to Olive C. Jones, his secretary during the 1930s and, later, editor of Methuen's children's books.

Walter Evans Edge (1873-1956) was a notable New Jersey businessman and politician, serving New Jersey as Governor from 1917-1919 and 1944-1947 and as a United States Senator from 1919-1929. The Walter E. Edge Papers document Edge's personal and professional life through correspondence, speeches, government documents, photographs, memorabilia, and scrapbooks.

Walter E. Spahr (1891-1970) was a professor of economics at New York University who was a strong supporter of the gold standard. Spahr was a founding member and officer of the Economists' National Committee for Monetary Policy, which advocated for sound monetary policies for the United States. Spahr's papers document his scholarship and include his writings and related correspondence.

Consists of correspondence and miscellaneous materials related to Walter Kauzmann's work on the Manhattan Project and his career as a professor of chemistry at Princeton University.

The collection consists of autobiographical material and other works such as manuscripts of books, sermon outlines, prayers, articles, and essays; correspondence with family during the time Lowrie was in Europe (especially letters to his mother), but also correspondence with friends and colleagues, particularly Howard A. Johnson, a long-time friend and executor of his estate; photographs of religious art presumably used for his books; documents including certificates and agreements with book publishers; printed matter including reprints of published works; and writings and documents created by Howard A. Johnson and other Kierkegaard scholars.

The Warner Bros. Screenplays consists of a large collection of scripts for films produced by the Warner Bros. studio.

The records of the War Service Bureau include a wide range of documentation for Princeton men who served in World War II. Materials include biographical, military and school-related information, as well as correspondence between the students and Princeton University staff, faculty and students, and subject files for the War Service Bureau office.

Sir W. Arthur Lewis (1915-1991) was a pioneer in the field of economic development and a leading authority on economic growth in developing countries and associated political and social changes. He was a professor at the University of Manchester and Princeton University and served as an advisor to several governments. Lewis, who was from the Caribbean, also broke through racial barriers in the academic world throughout his career. Lewis's papers document his career as a scholar and as an economic advisor and include his professional correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and writings.

Consists of selected material by and about the Irish poet and dramatist William Butler Yeats, including correspondence, a poetry manuscript, photographs, family items, and Cuala Press ephemera.

Consists of the publishing and administrative records of Weidenfeld & Nicolson, a British publishing company founded by George Weidenfeld (1919-2016) and Nigel Nicolson (1917-2004), which specialized in literary fiction and nonfiction, with an emphasis on history, biographies and memoirs, books by world leaders and political figures, glossy illustrated books, travel guides, and reference books. The collection documents the operations of the firm from its establishment in 1948 through its sale in 1991, and also includes some later records from as recent as 2012 related to its continued operation as an imprint of the Orion Publishing Group.

Consists of papers of the American author and novelist Wendell Wilcox (1906-1981), including personal correspondence and photographs of his wife, Esther Willson Wilcox, their relatives, and other writers and friends.

Consists of four small groups of correspondence between Wesley Halliburton and others after the death of his famous son Richard in 1939. Richard Halliburton was a celebrated adventurer and author known, among other things, for having swum the length of the Panama Canal.

The papers of Whiting Willauer (1906-1962) reflect Willauer's entire career, but focus most strongly on the period from 1941 to 1954 when Willauer was in China and worked for China Defense Supplies, Inc. (1941-1944), the Foreign Economic Administration (1944-1945), the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration [NRRA] (1946-1947), and Civil Air Transport, Inc. (1946-1954). The papers also document his positions as an admiralty lawyer for the New York City law firm, Bingham, Dana and Gould (1931-1938), as Attorney, Criminal Division at the Department of Justice and Special Assistant to United States Attorney General (1929-1940), Special Counsel for the Federal Power Commission (1941), and his appointments as United States Ambassador to Honduras (1954-1958) and Costa Rica (1958-1961). In addition, materials which reflect Willauer's role as a delegate to the Organization of American States' Meetings of Foreign Ministers (August 1960) and to the United Nations General Assembly (October 1960) are found in the papers.

Mary Mapes Dodge was an author and editor of St. Nicholas magazine. This collection consists of manuscripts and correspondence concerning St. Nicholas, and correspondence, documents, photographs, and memorabilia relating to the Dodge family.

Consists of material which reflects the long careers of American educators, authors, and literary critics Willard and Margaret Thorp. Willard's papers (1923-1981) include correspondence, writings, class lecture notes, documents, journals and diaries, printed matter, photographs, and papers of others during his writing and teaching years at Princeton University. Margaret's papers (1917-1960) include writings, correspondence, journals, notebooks, and family sketchbooks and photographs.

Consists of selected papers of William Fleet, the first American Rhodes Scholar.

The papers of William A. Eddy (1896-1962), educator, diplomat, minister to Saudi Arabia, intelligence agent, and college president, focus on his presidency of Hobart College (1936-1941), his work in U.S. - Middle East policy, and his family life in the period from 1917-1962. The holdings of his personal and family correspondence is extensive. The collection contains all correspondence from his term as president of Hobart College, 1936-1941. Many military documents are included, especially in the years 1941-1946 (the planning of the North African landings, the FDR/Ibn Saud meeting, the Treaty of the Yemen). There are many geneological papers and letters from Eddy's relatives concerning American missionary work in the Middle East. There are numerous publications concerning 18th C. English literature, religious and civic duties, U.S. Foreign policy re Israel and the Arabs, and sociological accounts of the Middle East. The collection is composed of personal/professional correspondence, documents, diaries and notebooks, addresses, publications, manuscripts of Eddy's books and articles (including unpublished MSs), scrapbooks, photographs, negatives, and memorabilia.

Consists of papers of William Berryman Scott (Princeton Class of 1877), an eminent vertebrate paleontologist and professor of geology at Princeton University.

William Byler was Executive Director of the Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA) from 1962 to 1980. After leaving AAIA, Byler continued advocating for the Native American community, first at Gerard, Byler and Associates and later at William Byler Associates. Byler's papers document his work on behalf of the Native American community after leaving AAIA. The papers include legal memoranda, draft and final agreements between Native American communities and companies or government agencies, and court documents, as well as topical files of related legislation and reports on the issues.

William C. Trimble, Princeton University Class of 1930, was a career diplomat, serving as United States ambassador to Cambodia (1959-1962) and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs (1965-1968) as well as serving in Brazil and Germany. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, and assorted memorabilia documenting Trimble's career.

Consists chiefly of correspondence of British musicologist William Charles Smith related to music and to George Frederic Handel.

The collection consists of documents, correspondence, photographs, and other papers of William Courtenay (1832-1901), an English settler, veteran of the American Civil War, and frontier businessman who held positions in the United States Department of the Interior as postmaster, clerk, and Indian Agent at Fort Berthold, Dakota Territory, from 1874 to 1882. These materials document conditions at the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation and are of particular interest for their documentation of frontier transactions, corruption and mismanagement within the reservation system, and the relationships between the people of the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara), the Sioux people, and white settlers.

William Horne and Ernest Hemingway were lifelong friends. Horne met Hemingway while a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Red Cross during World War I. They were stationed in Schio, Italy, and drove together on the same ambulance. After Hemingway's failed engagement to Agnes von Kurowsky, they shared an apartment in Chicago during the fall of 1920. When Hemingway married Hadley Richardson in September 1921, Horne was in the wedding party. When the writer died in 1961, Horne was an honorary pallbearer. William E. Colby, Princeton University Class of 1940, was a career agent in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Director of Central Intelligence from 1973-1976. However, the bulk of the collection documents his post-CIA career and contains correspondence, speeches, writings, newspaper clippings, and subject files that reflect Colby's professional and private interests.

Consists of manuscripts and letters of American novelist and Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner and related materials, including manuscripts of Maurice Coindreau's translation into French of four Faulkner novels.

William F. Shellman was a member of the Dept. of Architecture faculty at Princeton University faculty forty years (1946-1986). He taught introductory courses in architecture and the visual arts and courses designed to heighten architectural students' visual sensitivity. His collection consists of his papers, primarily lectures and notes for his classes, but including matted illustrations and photographs of sample forms of architecture, cassette tapes of lectures, slides, architectural drawings, and watercolors.

Consists of manuscripts, photographs, and ephemera by and about the Lebanese-American philosophical essayist, novelist, mystical poet, and artist Kahlil Gibran, who, by fusing elements of Eastern and Western mysticism, achieved lasting fame with such poetic works as The Prophet (1923) and Jesus, the Son of Man (1928). This material was collected by William H. Shehadi.

William Jovanovich (1920-2001) was an American publisher, author, and businessman, who led the publishing firm Harcourt Brace Jovanovich from 1954 to 1991, as president and later as chief executive officer. The collection consists of Jovanovich's author and publisher files, including an extensive file on Charles A. Lindbergh, along with correspondence, writings, personal and family papers, memorabilia, and other files documenting his career as a major American publisher in the 20th century, his creative pursuits in fiction and nonfiction, and his interest in Yugoslav literature and textbook publishing.

Consists of works, correspondence, and documents of William Kelly Prentice, a Greek scholar and authority on classical inscriptions, as well as selected papers of his father and various other family members.

The William K. Selden Collection on Eating Clubs contains research materials collected by Selden for the publication, Club Life at Princeton; An Historical Account of the Upper-Class Eating Clubs at Princeton University. Selden donated the material to the Archives in 1994.

The William K. Selden Collection on the History of Health Services at Princeton University contains research materials gathered by Selden for the publication, The Heritage of Isabella McCosh (Princeton University Press, 1991). The collections contains drafts, comments on the drafts, photographs, manuscript notes and photocopies of documents made by Selden for the book.

This collection consists of American historian William M. Armstrong's works and research material on Edwin Lawrence Godkin (1831-1902), a founder and editor of The Nation (1865-1881) and editor of the New York Evening Post (1883-1900). The collection contains typed manuscripts of Armstrong's biography on Godkin along with other writings, as well as photocopies, microfilms, and typescripts of correspondence.

Consists of articles, correspondence, notes, miscellaneous material, and printed matter of William McElwee Miller, a Presbyterian clergyman and a missionary in Iran from 1919 to 1962.

William M. Leary (1934-2006) was an aviation historian who wrote his doctoral thesis on the politician H. Alexander Smith. The collection contains materials that Leary consulted in the process of writing his thesis, along with a manuscript of the thesis.

Consists primarily of correspondence of William M. Sloane during his publishing and editorial career, which is documented in several publishing files. These include papers of the Association of American University Presses when Sloane served as vice-president and president (1966, 1969-70); the Council on Books in Wartime; the Visiting Committee of American Book Publishers; and the publishing houses of Henry Holt and Company (1938-46) and William Sloane Associates (1946-52).

William O. Baker (1915-2005) was a prominent research chemist, head of Bell Laboratories, and a frequent advisor to the government on scientific affairs and technology. His government service spanned from the Truman administration through the Bush administration and focused on intelligence gathering and national security issues. Baker's papers document his government service beginning with President Eisenhower, as well as his career at Bell Labs, and include correspondence, writings, and reports.

Consists of selected papers of W. Oliver Strunk, who was a professor of music at Princeton University (1937-1966).

William Rankin (Princeton Class of 1886) was an art historian, specializing in Italian art, and was co-author, with Alice Van Vechten Brown, of A Short History of Italian Painting (1914). Consists of correspondence of Rankin.

Consists primarily of the professional papers of prominent late 19th- and early 20th-century American theatrical stage manager and director William Seymour (1855-1933). The majority of papers include correspondence as well as numerous production-related materials, such as playscripts, promptbooks, and sheet music. Family members, particularly other well-known theater figures, such as Seymour's sister-in-law Fanny Davenport (1850-1898), are also represented in the collection through correspondence, production materials, ephemera, and newspaper clippings.

William Starr Myers (1877-1954) was a professor of history and politics at Princeton University and a noted historian of New Jersey and the Republican Party. The William Starr Myers Papers document the history of his teaching career and published works.

Conists of personal papers of William Tipping Esq, of Brasted Park, Sevenoaks, in Kent, and Avray near Paris. He was the son of the successful Liverpool merchant John Tipping, who in his twenties traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East before turning to Tory politics and serving as director of the London and North Western Railway.

The William W. Lockwood Papers document the American Institute of Pacific Relations and Lockwood's activities within the organization during the McCarthy era. A significant amount of the collection concerns the investigation of the Institute of Pacific Relations by Senators Joseph McCarthy and Pat McCarran. The collection also documents U.S.-Far East relations, particularly U.S.-Japanese trade and the Japanese textile industry.

Consists of letters and drawings of William Yarrell, a nineteenth-century British naturalist, and related printed matter.

This microfilm consists primarily of pamphlets published by non-governmental organizations and government agencies from various Latin American countries in relation to women and gender issues. The bulk of the material was published during the 1980s and 1990s.

The Woodrow Wilson Additional Materials consist of materials that the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library has acquired on Woodrow Wilson since the mid-1990s.

The Woodrow Wilson Collection consists of Wilson holdings which have been acquired by the Princeton University Library Special Collections gradually over many years by purchase and gifts from many sources. The collection is rich in material prior to Wilson's presidential years, although it is not limited to this period; researchers will find materials documenting both the public and private life of Woodrow Wilson. Various types of information written by or about Wilson are present in the collection, including manuscripts, addresses, articles, correspondence, telegrams, legal documents, booklets, pamphlets, photographs, portraits, cartoons, newspapers and scrapbooks.

The Woodrow Wilson Foundation was an organization formed in 1921 in New York City for the "perpetuation of Wilson's ideals" through research grants and publications. The collection consists of the administrative records of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the bulk of which are financial records, correspondence, notes, committee minutes, press releases, research proposals, and awards dating from 1921-1963. The collection also includes a small amount of audivisual material, photographs and sound recordings.

The undergraduate Policy Seminar is one of the defining elements of the academic curriculum of Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. The records consist of the final reports, as well as some syllabi and course materials from the policy seminars and a short-lived graduate-level program from the 1960s.

The World Press Freedom Committee (1976-2009) was an organization dedicated to monitoring threats to press freedom, focusing on major intergovernmental organizations, especially UNESCO. The WPFC served as a watchdog against limitations on press freedom and provided practical assistance programs to journalists abroad, especially in developing countries, to enable them to establish and maintain a free press. The World Press Freedom Committee Records document the administration and activities of the WPFC for its entire period of operations and include project files, meeting minutes, correspondence, and publications.

WPRB is the student-operated FM radio station of Princeton University, providing music and live sports broadcasts to the Princeton campus community and surrounding areas. The records consist of various materials which document the origins and development of WPRB, including constitutions, by-laws, photographs, membership lists, clipped articles, board minutes, correspondence, and financial reports.

W. Willard (Bill) Wirtz was a lawyer, an arbitrator, a law professor, and served as undersecretary and secretary of labor under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. He was a speechwriter for, and close advisor to, Adlai Stevenson from 1952 to 1960. The W. Willard Wirtz Collection on Adlai Stevenson documents Stevenson's campaigns for president in 1952 and 1956, as well as Stevenson's political activities in 1960 and in between campaigns. Because Wirtz was a speechwriter in 1952, in charge of speech content in 1956, and a close advisor and occasional speechwriter at other times, this collection most strongly documents the campaign activities of drafting speeches and fine-tuning campaign policy.

consists of scrapbooks of publicity photographs of American motion-picture actors and actresses, mainly of the 1930s and 1940s, collected by Mrs. A. M. Yeandle.

The Zelda Fitzgerald Papers consists of manuscripts, correspondence, miscellaneous notes and related material, documents, pictures, clippings, and photographs of American author Zelda Fitzgerald.

This collection consists of materials collected by the law firm of McCarter & English of Newark, New Jersey in connection with representation of the Iowa, Sac and Fox, Otoe and Missouria, and Omaha tribes before the United States Indian Claims Commission between 1958 and 1970. The records document the cases; briefs, findings of fact, valuations, reports and orders are included. More significantly, the records include a vast storehouse of evidentiary documentation on the history of these tribes and others, much of it dating to the early nineteenth century.

The American Civil Liberties Union Records document the activities of the Union in protecting individual rights from 1920 through 1995. The files contain materials on freedom of speech, expression, and association; due process of law; equality before the law; legal case files; and organizational records. Within these categories files reflect subject areas such as academic freedom, censorship, racial discrimination, aliens' rights, privacy concerns, labor concerns, amnesty, and government loyalty and security. The files reflect work on litigation, advocacy and public policy, and subject files on various areas of interest connected with civil liberties. Materials include correspondence, court documents, memoranda, printed matter, minutes, reports, briefs, and legal files. Also included are materials from ACLU affiliate organizations, and the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Committee.

The Alfred and Mary Gwinn Hodder Papers consists of writings, correspondence, documents, photographs, miscellaneous material, and printed matter of attorney and author Alfred LeRoy Hodder. Also included are similar papers of his wife, Mary Gwinn Hodder, who was a professor of English literature.

Consists of selected letters, both in English and French, by the nineteetnh-century English poet and novelist Ernest Christopher Dowson. His correspondents include other writers, poets, journalists, and editors from France and England.

Harold Sprout was a professor of Politics at Princeton University. Consists of Sprout's collection of copies of papers in the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library (Iowa) pertaining to the London Naval Conference of 1930 which resulted in a treaty for the limitation of naval armaments and the exchange of information concerning naval construction between the United States, Great Britain, and Japan.

Within these categories files reflect subject areas such as academic freedom, censorship, racial discrimination, aliens' rights, privacy concerns, labor concerns, amnesty, and government loyalty and security. The files reflect work on litigation, advocacy and public policy, and subject files on various areas of interest connected with civil liberties. Materials include correspondence, court documents, memoranda, printed matter, minutes, reports, briefs, and legal files. Also included are materials from ACLU affiliate organizations, and the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Committee.

Consists of works, letters, photographs, and printed matter of Leroy Lansing Janes, a teacher at the Kumamoto Yogakko (Kumamoto School for Western Learning) in Japan (1871-1876).

This collection contains images used or considered for use by the publication the Princeton Alumni Weekly. The photographs are generally black-white glossy 8x10 prints; however, 5x7 prints are also found within the collection. The photographs are arranged in general topics, and then alphabetically within each subject. New accruals are added on to the end of the collection and maintained in the order in which they were transferred.

The 250th anniversary of Princeton's founding as the College of New Jersey in 1746, also known by the coined term "Bicennquinquagenary", was celebrated in 1996-1997 with a yearlong series of events. The collection consists of the records of the office in charge of organizing all 250th anniversary celebration activities, as well as examples of the many publications, event programs, invitations, posters, audio and visual recordings, and commemorative artifacts created in conjunction with those activities.

The organization that became Americans United for Separation of Church and State was founded in 1947 to protect church-state separation and religious freedom, as well as to educate lawmakers, religious leaders, and the general public regarding Constitutional religious liberties. The records document the administration and issues of the organization from its founding and include correspondence, meeting materials, and publications.

Consists primarily of the personal papers of Hodge, including lectures, speeches, articles, books an correspondence dealing with questions of Presbyterian theology in the mid and latter nineteenth century. The papers reflect Hodge's lifelong association with the Princeton Theological Seminary (PTS).

Consists of personal and working papers of Cobo Borda, a Colombian poet, essayist, journalist, and diplomat, primarily manuscript poems and essays as well as correspondence, spanning the period from 1970 to 2017. The Carlos Franqui Collection contains works and correspondence of Cuban journalist, poet, and essayist Carlos Franqui, who moved to Europe in 1968 after becoming dissatisfied with Castro's Cuban regime. Included are manuscripts for Diario de la Revolucion Cubana (1976), Cuba, Libro de los Doce (1977), and Retrato de Familia con Fidel (1981) concerning the Cuban revolution of 1959 and Franqui's association with Fidel Castro.

The James Green Correspondence consists of letters received from various correspondents by the 19th-century English poet James Green (of Bath).
