The Writings series includes Widenmann's writings for use within Loeb, Rhoades Company and drafts of articles and speeches presented to the financial, economic, and business communities. The subjects of his writings include monetary problems, gold and the gold standard, the United States economy, and the money and stock markets. The reports for Loeb, Rhoades Company include analysis of these same subjects, as well as discussions about the performance and strategies of the company. The series also includes a few reports written while Widenmann was an executive at Ludwig Bendix's firm, and a few of Widenmann's student papers.

Hans A. Widenmann (1897-1976) was a stockbroker and economist with expertise in national and international monetary affairs. His successful business career was largely spent at Loeb, Rhoades & Company, and he was also frequently called upon to speak about international finance subjects. Widenmann's papers document his career at Loeb, Rhoades & Company and include his correspondence and writings, topical files, and biographical files.

Jean Labatut Papers, 1915-1983 (mostly 1920-1979)

The Jean Labatut Papers consists of the professional papers of Jean Labatut (1899-1986), which include correspondence with prominent twentieth-century architects, landscape architects, and designers, the architectural files for his major and minor projects, and the administrative papers and teaching materials that he accumulated while he was the Director of Graduate Studies in Architecture at Princeton University (1928-1967), the position for which he is best remembered. Also included are Labatut's family papers, containing albums of photographs compiled by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Elliott F. Shepard, while she helped to operate a convalescence home founded by her husband in France for soldiers in World War I.

Howard C. Petersen Papers, 1915-1995 (mostly 1935-1970)
Howard C. Petersen (1910-1995) was an expert in international economics and foreign trade. He served in the War Department under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as Assistant Secretary of War for President Harry S. Truman, as National Finance Chairman and fundraiser for the Dwight D. Eisenhower campaigns, and as Special Assistant on International Trade for President John F. Kennedy. Petersen was also a principal drafter of the Selective Service Act, a lawyer, and president of Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Company. Petersen's papers document his entire career, especially his work with the new Security and Exchange Commission regulations as a lawyer in the 1930s and with the United States War Department during World War II, and include correspondence, articles, and publications.

Series XVI, Photographs/Negatives - (1916-1950 [bulk 1940-1950]) includes five boxes containing photographs, one box of photonegatives, and one box containing 21 oversize photoprints. Most of the photographs are accompanied by captions used in UCR/USC press releases. The bulk of the photographs are of China, the most significant subjects being Chinese military operations during World War II; orphans, children and schools; refugees and war devastation; and medical work in China. There are photographs and negatives from Lennig Sweet's tour of China during the war, along with his detailed captions for each photo. There are also a few photographs taken by Sweet in Korea in 1916. The other major focus of the photographs is fundraising events conducted by UCR/USC. Many officials and supporters are represented including Clare Boothe and Henry Luce, Pearl Buck, President and Mme. Chiang Kai-shek, and a number of celebrities from Hollywood and professional athletics.

Series IV, Administration Files - (1934-1951 [Bulk 1941-1950]) contains records dealing with all aspects of the corporation. It contains documents on how UCR/USC was organized on a nation-wide level, including information on the hierarchical organization of the agency, handbooks for regional and local directors, and form letters sent out in mass mailings. It also includes information about the organization of the central office in New York, including a large number of inter-office memoranda. In addition, this series deals with UCR/USC's interaction with other charitable organizations as well as documents concerned with many of the individuals who were important to UCR/USC's efforts who were not on the board of directors and reports of the activities of UCR/USC. One item in this series, the "Regional Directors Manual" is located at the end of the collection in box 91, the oversize box.
United Service to China Records, 1934-1967 (mostly 1941-1950)

The Records of United Service to China, Inc., known from 1941 to 1946 as United China Relief, Inc., document the activities of the organization from the early formation in 1940 to its official consolidation with the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China in 1966. In addition there is a limited amount of material from other Chinese relief agencies that predate the founding of United China Relief / United Service to China. The Records focus on UCR/USC attempts to raise money in the United States, to educate Americans about China and the Chinese people, and to carry on relief work in China. The collection consists primarily of correspondence among the various individuals and agencies involved with UCR/USC, along with other material produced by the agency, such as minutes and publicity material. In addition, the collection includes a series of photographs dealing with China during the 1940s and efforts in the United States to raise money for China during the same period.

The papers of Whiting Willauer (1906-1962) reflect Willauer's entire career, but focus most strongly on the period from 1941 to 1954 when Willauer was in China and worked for China Defense Supplies, Inc. (1941-1944), the Foreign Economic Administration (1944-1945), the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration [NRRA] (1946-1947), and Civil Air Transport, Inc. (1946-1954). The papers also document his positions as an admiralty lawyer for the New York City law firm, Bingham, Dana and Gould (1931-1938), as Attorney, Criminal Division at the Department of Justice and Special Assistant to United States Attorney General (1929-1940), Special Counsel for the Federal Power Commission (1941), and his appointments as United States Ambassador to Honduras (1954-1958) and Costa Rica (1958-1961). In addition, materials which reflect Willauer's role as a delegate to the Organization of American States' Meetings of Foreign Ministers (August 1960) and to the United Nations General Assembly (October 1960) are found in the papers.

Series 5: Oversized Materials, 1916-1978
SOME ONLINE MATERIAL
The Oversized Materials series contains materials that are too large to fit inside normal record cartons. The appointments, certificates, and commissions grouping contains all official and decorative documents awarded to Lanham for all ranks from Corporal in Second Regiment of the Eastern High School Cadets to Major General in the United States Army. The Awards and Citations found in the papers include scrolls given by American Units and foreign honors bestowed on Lanham, including a French Knighthood and Czechoslovakian War Cross. The series also includes several photobooks and scrapbooks. The photos often have information written on the back providing date, context, and identifying people. The scrapbooks document Lanham's career from 1945 until his retirement and contain various articles, pictures, commentary, and artifacts that detail his experience. Only one incomplete ledger documents 1955-1978. The vinyl records are recordings of speeches given by Lanham or events held in his honor.

The General Files Subseries documents portions of the administrative functions of the Council. It includes subject files on various administrative matters, including rules and policies of the Council, relations with other organizations (including the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the Council's parallel organization in London), fundraising, and records on legal issues such as breaches of confidentiality, as well as attacks on and critiques of the Council. Other information included in this subseries documents anniversary planning and the history of the Harold Pratt House, the Council's New York headquarters. This subseries includes some significant documents from the Council's formative years, such as documents on the "Anglo-American Institute of Foreign Affairs," and information on the merger between its American branch and the existing Council on Foreign Relations (and materials from that earlier body); early drafts of a charter and statements of purpose, early correspondence, meeting minutes and membership lists; and documents on the development of the Foreign Affairs journal.

This material was collected by William H. Shehadi.

Galbraith Ward, Class of 1915, and Marquand Ward, Class of 1917, were both Princeton graduates who served and died in World War I. This collection consists of many letters and postcards they wrote to their childhood nurse, Margaret Heyerdahl, plus a photograph album compiled after their deaths.

Bowie was a foreign policy expert and legal scholar who served four U.S. administrations as policy planner, counselor, and deputy CIA director, while teaching at Harvard Law School and founding Harvard's Center for International Affairs. The Robert R. Bowie Papers reflect his government service under four administrations, as well as his position at Harvard University, his Army service and work in the postwar military government of Germany, research for books he wrote, and his later activities as a member of national and international policy and strategy organizations.
