Princeton University Library Collection of Kōstas Zēmerēs Photographs, 1900-1999

Kostas Zēmerēs was born in 1886 in Katēchōri Pelion. He studied at the Commercial School of Volos, where he took his first lessons from the painter Iōannēs Poulakas. In 1904 he went to the United States where he worked in photo labs collaborating with painters and photographers. There he had the opportunity to study at the Art Institute of Saint Louis. He returned to Greece in 1912 where he was recruited during the Balkan Wars. Later, after the World War I, he remained in Athens working with great photographers, such as George Bouka and Nelly's. Finally he returned to Volos where he worked as a professional photographer and painter. He participated in many exhibitions in Greece and abroad, such as in Calais (France) in 1925 and Liverpoool (England) in 1926. He received the gold medal at the International Exhibition of Thessalonikē (Greece) in 1932 and 1936. Zēmerēs gave us the unique photographs of the painter Theophilos Chatzēmichaēl. He died at the age of 96. Consists of an open collection of silver prints depicting Greek landscapes by Kōstas Zēmerēs.

Dufour's writings depict an ardent republican who promoted the value of design education for artists during the Industrial Revolution and early years of industrial design. Course materials cover elements of design and perspective, anatomy and proportion of the human figure, aesthetics, composition, and ornamental design, as well as touch on architecture and natural history.

Treatise on Art, undated

This file group comprises Dufour's working papers for a treatise, intended to serve as a textbook to accompany his course on art and design, that was never completed. It comprises drafts of text and illustrations, progressively less finished. The early sections appear to be nearly ready for the press, while later sections consist only of outlines, partial drafts, and sketches. There are a number of transfers of drawings on varnished paper of the kind often made to prepare drawings for engraving. These include a number of architectural studies, suggesting that Dufour had planned to add a fourth part on decorative art, including architecture, hinted at the end of his outline for the course.

Warnock, like Mathey, came from Cranford NJ, and was recipient of the Captain Newell Fiske Memorial Scholarship, recommended by Dean Mathey. The series also contains clippings on Dean Mathey playing tennis and a few various other papers relating to Warnock's time as a student at Princeton.

Consists of two photographs (26 x 12 cm each) attached on both sides of the same cardboard (previous part of a detached photograph album from the late 19th century). The first photograph depicts the port of Piraeus, captioned "Pyraeus" and numbered "73" on the negative in white ink. It could be dated approximately in 1888 from the buildings. The second image on the other side of the cardboard depicts the Choragic Monument of Lycicrates, the surrounding then houses and the Lycabettus Hill at the background, captioned on the cardboard "Dorisches Monument des Lysicrates" and numbered "28".

Bayard Taylor Putnam (1854-1886) was geological surveyor in the Division of Mining Geology for the United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) from the founding of the agency in 1879 to the early 1880s. This collection consists of Putnam's professional papers, including correspondence and field notes, which document his work with the U.S.G.S, specifically his surveys of iron-ore and coal mines for the Tenth U.S. Census. His papers also relate to a patented combined protractor and chart holder that Putnam invented. Other Putnam family members, particularly his wife, Grace Haven Putnam (1855-1900), are also represented.

Strachan, Garth, 2016 July 5

Strachan recounts his background in receiving and training others in military combat work and his involvement with the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP), and the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) in Britain. He also describes the ANC presence in the city of Lusaka in Zambia and the attacks on Lusaka in the 1970s and 1980s by Southern Rhodesia and the apartheid regime in South Africa. In relation to Nelson Mandela, Strachan discusses the campaigns for Nelson Mandela's release from prison and his role in typing up a manuscript of Mandela's prison memoirs as well as decoding and typing other political documents.

The English translation with revisions in English and annotations in Spanish. The English revisions seem to be for minor syntax/emphasis. Meyers List, Inc., Records, 1911-2005

Incorporated as The Melody Company by Abraham Meyers in 1911, the firm was purchased in 1967 by Princeton alumnus Charles H. Rose (Class of 1950) and his wife. By offering comic strips--the plates for printing them--to small newspapers, the firm was able to secure advertising space, which it sold to national advertisers seeking wider, more regional coverage. Advertisers knew the firm as The Meyers List; newspapers knew it as International Cartoons Limited. The company was dissolved on 20 March 1997, and its printing plates were distributed to various museums and repositories, including Princeton University. Consists of assorted records of the American Melody Company and its corporate aliases (Meyers List Inc. and International Cartoons Limited), including minute and stock books, corporate seals, scrapbooks of cartoon strips, copies of contracts with advertisers, trademark registrations, and dissolution documents.
