Life, Love and Letters: A Book of Travel Notes and Critical Essays, undated

Typescript, with preface by Abe Tobin (with autograph corrections by FH); with a list of contents, with numerous deletions by FH in pencil. It looks very much as though this apparently unpublished book was made up of stray articles, gathered under a loose title and justified after the event. Among the subjects are: Quebec, and a visit to Savannah; the crucifixion of Danzic; Lytton Strachey's Eminent Victorians; books by Theodore Dreiser, Galsworthy, Somerset Maugham, Upton Sinclair, etc. A good portion of the essays or sections announced in the list of contents are not here, but enough remains to show that FH was going through them with a view to a collected publication. A number have annotations in his (now very shaky) hand reading "Good" or "Fair to middle." With the original envelope annotated in pencil: "Chapter 22 (with exception of Emily Brontë) sent to Abe Tobin on 12/6/29," and (below): "Abe Tobin's Book."

Hematite Cylinder Seal, Old Babylonian period

Worship scene; a god, apparently with no distinguishing characteristics, stands left; immediately before him a lahmu holds a vase from which water flows; it flows down over the god's hand, as if he is washing his hand. Behind the lahmu stands a lamassu; behind her stands a secondary figure of the weather god Adad holding a forked thunderbolt in his outstretched left hand; he holds his right hand up behind his head, but whatever he carries in that hand, if anything, is lost to a chip. Before him is a small male figure, whose arms end in thunderbolts, half kneeling and turning his head back towards Adad.

Before her stands an utukku wearing a tall conical hat. Behind him stands a lamassu. In the sky before Ishtar is a crescent; in the sky before the lamassu is a 'horned toad'; in the lower field, a fly.

Between the bull and the lion, a human head; in the sky behind the liongriffin is a star of eight points; an uncertain device behind the lahmu and kusarikku.

Composite volume containing manuscript copies of three works by Handel, Dettingen Te Deum, Utrecht Te Deum, and Utrecht Jubilate, dates not examined

Written in unknown hand on a pale blue paper, which is probably to be dated 1807. The 3/4 section of the first chorus of the Dettingen Te Deum has two missing bars at 82-84, a mistake which occurs in all the early printed scores (Walsh, Randall, Wright, etc.) until corrected in the English Handel Society's edition of 1846/7. This suggests that this manuscript may have been copied from the early printed scores.
