Writings on Allen Dulles, 1933-1989

Series 3: Writing, 1863-1988
The Writings series includes drafts and published copies of articles and books written by Dulles and related correspondence with readers. The majority of her writings concern the career of her brother, John Foster Dulles. Other topics include a fictional story on visiting a brain, Harvard during the twenties, and life as an ambassador. Also included are transcripts of two interviews conducted with Dulles about her life and career with the State Department and reference materials she collected in preparation for writing, the majority of which are newspaper clippings about John Foster Dulles.
Series 2: Topical Files, 1892-1989

The Topical Files series is predominantly composed of copies of articles and books written about the Dulles Family, especially Dulles's brother John Foster, as well as related correspondence seeking her approval for publication. Included are unpublished manuscript translations of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Conversations with Eckermann and Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and Travels, a manuscript of The Letters of Thomas Mann to Caroline Newton, and other miscellaneous writings. While the majority of the writings relate to Thomas Mann and other literary topics, there are also some notes and writings from Newton's study and practice of psychoanalysis.

This file group includes drafts, excerpts, addenda, and final versions of various writings by Pacheco, including poetry, short stories, scripts, screenplays, essays, articles, translations, and others. Also included are writings by other authors, including translations of Pacheco's works. A large number of writings were undated, untitled, unattributed, and in many cases, drafts and fragments mixed together, which were impossible to separate and identify given the disorganized state of the material upon receipt.

The series is composed of materials created and gathered by William Diebold in the process of writing his unfinished book on the War and Peace Studies group. The series includes three boxes of publications: two boxes containing records of meetings and reports from groups within the War and Peace Studies project and one box of Irish publications. Writings, 1943-1963
Includes handwritten and typed drafts of and notes relating to various works, including books, scripts, short stories, music, articles and essays, and poetry, several of which Behan drafted during his time in Mountjoy Prison and Curragh Camp. Of special note are three manuscripts for Borstal Boy, including two substantial annotated typescripts and a copybook containing what appears to be the earliest preparatory draft written in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin, in 1948, as well as notes in Irish relating to the work. (Note that the different versions of Borstal Boy are located within several of the genre types listed here (Books, Scripts, and Miscellaneous Notes).
Possible Early Draft for Borstal Boy, and a Poem, "Scriosad na mblascaod", 1948
Contains an autobiographical essay (possibly a draft beginning for Borstal Boy), in English, 19 pages (incomplete); and "Scriosad na mblascaod", an autograph poem signed and initialled, in Irish, with numerous cancellations and emendations that Behan drafted while in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin. The name and address of Behan's brother, Dominic, is inscribed on the front cover.

Sir W. Arthur Lewis (1915-1991) was a pioneer in the field of economic development and a leading authority on economic growth in developing countries and associated political and social changes. He was a professor at the University of Manchester and Princeton University and served as an advisor to several governments. Lewis, who was from the Caribbean, also broke through racial barriers in the academic world throughout his career. Lewis's papers document his career as a scholar and as an economic advisor and include his professional correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and writings.

Writings, 1935-2016
Consists of drafts of both individual works and full-length books and book projects by John Ennis in various stages of completion, along with proofs, poem lists, notebooks and loose notes, source materials, research, photographs, cover designs, publicity materials, reviews, correspondence, and press clippings related to Ennis's writings. While the vast majority of materials relate to his poetry, both published and unpublished, a smaller number pertain to musical works created in collaboration with composer Eric Sweeney for which Ennis composed lyrics, drafts of unpublished short stories from the 1970s, and Ennis's 1997 PhD thesis on the use of myth and archetypes in his own poetry.

The Last Geraldine Officer, 1934-2009
Consists of drafts, proofs, extensive source materials and research notes, and a chapbook version of the collection called "A Geraldine Officer." Source materials include original materials from the 1930s and 1940s related to Brigadier Denis Henry Fitzgerald, including his diary from 1944 during the Normandy landings (for which transcriptions are also present) and a piece of parachute silk. There is also a copy of a letter from Queen Elizabeth II to FitzGerald thanking him for standing guard in Westminster Hall over her father's coffin (February 1952), as well as letters from FitzGerald to McCarthy (circa 1965) discussing politics and local news. There are also copies of related magazines and printed materials and ephemera related to FitzGerald's birthday celebrations and funeral.

Consists of research material, notes, outlines, drafts, galleys, and proofs. Yellow legal notepads contain notes, early draft material, and inserts for later typed and printed versions. Notepads are identified by their first lines, though a single notepad may contain a variety of material, including material relating to other works, correspondence drafts, and other unrelated notes. Corrected typescript and printout drafts often show significant revisions. Material from various stages of the publication process is present, including setting copies with copy-editor's and typesetter's marks, galleys, page proofs, F (folded-and-gathered pages, in signatures but not yet bound), blueline proofs ("confirmation blues"), advance copies (bound uncorrected proofs, pre-publication, often used for book reviewers) and production/design material with page and dust-jacket samples. Page numbers are noted for paginated material.
