Paul A. Volcker (1927-) is an economist who has served in several prominent positions in the federal government, most notably as undersecretary of the Treasury (1969-1974), chairman of the Federal Reserve (1979-1987), and chairman of President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board (2009-2011). The collection contains Volcker's subject files, mainly created during his term as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and incoming and outgoing correspondence from his tenure as chairman of the Federal Reserve. The collection also includes documentation of some of Volcker's specific duties in these two roles, such as records from the meetings of the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC).

Consists of a closed collection of more than 5,000 Western Americana photographs, consisting mostly of documentary photographs of the Trans-Mississippi West from the late 1860s to early 1900s, largely from the perspective of white photographers and settlers. Subjects include American Indians (especially studio portraits), natural wonders, cities, towns, buildings, and economic activities (mining, railroads, logging, and agriculture). Some photographs relate to the Indigenous populations of Mexico and Central America. The dimensions, physical formats, and photographic processes of the photographs vary widely.

Louise Dorothee (Dollie) Dyte Chareau (1880-1967) was the wife of the architect Pierre Chareau (1883-1950), who is best known for the Maison de Verre, which was built from 1927 to 1932 in Paris. This collection consists mainly of correspondence between Harold Rubinstein (1891-1975) and Dollie Chareau, and between Michael Rubenstein (1920-2001) and Pierre Chareau scholars, including Marc Vellay, Margaret Antalopoulos, and Margaret Tallet.

William Byler was Executive Director of the Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA) from 1962 to 1980. After leaving AAIA, Byler continued advocating for the Native American community, first at Gerard, Byler and Associates and later at William Byler Associates. Byler's papers document his work on behalf of the Native American community after leaving AAIA. The papers include legal memoranda, draft and final agreements between Native American communities and companies or government agencies, and court documents, as well as topical files of related legislation and reports on the issues.

Documented in the collection are a range of student activities, including cultural performances (dance and music), activism, reunions, and graduation. Arthur J. Horton Collection on Coeducation, 1968-1980

In January 1969, Princeton's trustees voted to make the undergraduate college coeducational, breaking the 224-year tradition of an all-male student body. The Patterson Committee, made up of faculty and administrators, had studied and advocated the change. The one dissenting voice on the committee was Arthur J. Horton '42, the university's director of development; he wrote a minority report and became a rallying point for those opposing the move. Horton's collection of materials on coeducation contains his annotated copy of the committee's report, his memoranda to the committee's chair and university administrators, official university releases and letters to alumni, and newspaper clippings regarding the change and campus issues in general. A quarter of the collection is letters from alumni, some welcoming coeducation but most strongly opposed.

Consists of a set of dog tags, fifteen pins, and a cloth badge from Gellhorn's career as a war correspondent, primarily from the Spanish Civil War and World War II, including dog tags from her time as a war correspondent for Collier's Magazine during World War II, which are embossed "Martha G. Hemingway / War Correspondent / Colliers Magazine;" her United States War Correspondent's badge; a "¡No pasarán!" pin from the Spanish Civil War; a United States Armed Forces Parachutist Badge with four stars affixed to it; along with other pins and military pips from Great Britain, the Middle East, and Russia.

Committee on the Education of Women at Princeton Records, 1955-1969 (mostly 1967-1969)

The Committee on the Education of Women at Princeton Records contain the working papers and correspondence of Gardner Patterson, Committee Chair, and his assistants. In June 1967 the Board of Trustees charged the Committee with the study of "the advisability and feasibility" of enlarging the University's role in the education of women. The final report, "The Education of Women at Princeton," was submitted to the Trustees in July 1968. Adopting the recommendation of the Committee, they voted in favor of coeducation the following January and appointed an Ad-Hoc Committee to advise on how to implement their decision. The collection contains some papers Patterson received as a member of this Ad-Hoc Committee, and drafts of its final report, "The Education of Undergraduate Women at Princeton: An Examination of Coordinate Versus Coeducational Patterns."

Memoria per L'Ufficiale dei Reparti Indigeni Della Cirinaica, circa 1932-1935

Consists of a 17-page typescript written from an Italian perspective on the history, cultural customs, and superstitions of the inhabitants of Cyrenaica. The first section recounts the history of Cyrenaica from the Carthaginian Empire through Italian colonization. The second section states practices and beliefs regarding childbirth, marriage, and eating habits, among other topics. It also generalizes about the personal characteristics of the askaris and their views on serving in the military. The text cuts off on page 17, as the sheet is torn and its bottom half is missing.

Seamus Heaney Manuscript Critiques, 1970s

Consists of a 1-page manuscript critique with edits of Ian Finley's "Celtic Art: An Introduction,"as well as a 1-page typed critique of Patrick Piggott's "The Life and Music of John Field, 1782-1837" with a proof copy of the book with scoring and corrections (possibly by Heaney). Also includes two postcards from Heaney to Kieran Sheedy: one from Detroit concerning a documentary on the composer John Field and the other from Dublin regarding a documentary about the troubled first production of Seán O'Casey's play "The Plough and the Stars" in 1926.

William Dodge Horne collection of Ernest Hemingway, 1928-2012

William Horne and Ernest Hemingway were lifelong friends. Horne met Hemingway while a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Red Cross during World War I. They were stationed in Schio, Italy, and drove together on the same ambulance. After Hemingway's failed engagement to Agnes von Kurowsky, they shared an apartment in Chicago during the fall of 1920. When Hemingway married Hadley Richardson in September 1921, Horne was in the wedding party. When the writer died in 1961, Horne was an honorary pallbearer. The Harpur Allen Gosnell Papers consist of various documents pertaining to Gosnell's ultimately unsuccessful efforts to initiate a Princeton University chapter of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps between 1927 and 1930. Also in the papers are several items of a more personal nature relating to Gosnell's childhood.

Films, circa 1920s-1930s

The majority of the audiovisual material is 16mm film. Five of the reels (two 16mm and three 8mm reels) are unlabeled with descriptive information (they are all labeled "Morris"). One of the reels of 8mm film is labeled "Director." There is also one DVD of a "lost film canister." The "lost film" contains footage from Dubois Morris's time in China as a missionary, and is noted to have 1928 footage of Shanghai, Nanjing, and Huaiyuan. The labeled 16mm film reels consist of a variety of subjects, with the majority of annotations indicating trips to various places, including Japan, England, Perry's Creek, Switzerland, France, Bavaria, China, etc. Most of the trips abroad are to European countries, though a couple films are noted as containing footage of Freehold, N.J., Princeton, N.J., and possibly Newark, N.J. Nearly half of the film reels feature footage from Stoney Lake, Ontario. About a quarter of the reels feature footage of their time in China. The films also contain footage of regattas, picnics, and Elizabeth Morris's graduation.

Photographs and Map of Anhui Province, circa 1910-1920

Consists of a large 1920 map of Anhui Province in eastern China, titled the "Postal Map of Anhwei District." The majority of the map is in Mandarin with some English. There are four large photographic prints: a hand-colored print of a city scene; a landscape shot of docked boats, with a note on the back "Hwai River?"; a family portrait of Dubois Morris, Alice Morris, and their three young children (circa 1914); a landscape shot of the Morris's garden in Huaiyuan, with Dubois Jr. and Elizabeth Morris, as older children, standing on the garden bridge in the distance.

Lantern Slides, circa 1895-1930

Consists of six boxes of lantern slides (glass slides). There are some duplicate images across the glass slides and across the photograph albums. Some of the slides have identifying information about people and places provided by the donor, but some of these notes may be in incorrect spots as they have moved. Most of the people who are identified are Morris family members, though there are other missionaries and their families who are also pictured in the slides. The majority of the people pictured in these slides are Chinese people from the communities of Huaiyuan in which missionaries of the Presbyterian Church were present. For example, there are many photographs of the various classes, events, groups, and organizations that Chinese people in Huaiyuan attended or staffed, such as the Women's Industrial School, various schools for children, a band or orchestra, the hospital, sports events, holidays, etc. Some of these photographs are candid, but most are posed group portraits. There are a few portraits of families who are not identified.

Albert Mathias Friend Papers, 1913-1955

Albert Mathias Friend, Jr. (Princeton Class of 1915), was an officer and a scholar. Friend served in World War I and then did his graduate studies in art and architecture in Europe, studying and salvaging the great works of art and architecture that may have been damaged by the fighting. He then worked with Harvard's Dumbarton Oaks Research Library before becoming a professor at Princeton University. The collection contains notes and course materials from Friend's time as a student and as a professor, correspondence, and some of his research materials, photographs, and negatives, focusing on medieval art and architecture in Greece, Rome, and other Mediterranean cultures.

Princeton University Student Christian Association Records, 1855-1967

The Student Christian Association and its predecessors were the dominant religious organizations at Princeton University for almost a hundred and fifty years. The Philadelphian Society, founded by a small group of students in 1825, was the quasi-official campus religious agency by the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1930 the Student-Faculty Association (SFA), organized by the Dean of the Chapel, took over the Society's programs, focusing on community service. In 1946 the Student Christian Association (SCA) replaced both the Society and the SFA, coordinating both religious and community service activities in campus. The Student Volunteers Council succeeded the SCA in 1967.
