Albert Mathias Friend Papers, 1913-1955
Albert Mathias Friend, Jr. (Princeton Class of 1915), was an officer and a scholar. Friend served in World War I and then did his graduate studies in art and architecture in Europe, studying and salvaging the great works of art and architecture that may have been damaged by the fighting. He then worked with Harvard's Dumbarton Oaks Research Library before becoming a professor at Princeton University. The collection contains notes and course materials from Friend's time as a student and as a professor, correspondence, and some of his research materials, photographs, and negatives, focusing on medieval art and architecture in Greece, Rome, and other Mediterranean cultures.

Manuscripts and corrected page proofs for poetry and prose writings, drawings and engraved illustrations, personal documents, record books of print sales, correspondence, inscribed books, binding dummies, and family papers of William Bell Scott (1811-1890), a Scottish poet, painter, art critic, and engraver, known for his association with the Pre-Raphaelite circle in London, and also personal and family correspondence of Alice Boyd, Scott's long-term companion, from 1859 until his death. The collection consists of materials acquired by the eminent Pre-Raphaelite scholar, William E. Fredeman (1928-1999) from members of the Boyd family, which were once housed at Penkill Castle, the residence of Alice Boyd, where Scott spent much of his later life.
A Poet's Harvest Home, Complete Bound Manuscript, Inscribed to Alice Boyd, 1881 August-September
Inscribed to Alice Boyd of Penkill Castle, in commemoration of the publication of A Poet's Harvest Home on April 15, 1882. William Bell Scott wrote out the poems by hand in August and September of 1881 at Penkill Castle. While some poems contain crossed out lines, annotations, and edits, the layout of this manuscript, including placed proofs of woodcut illustrations, is a very close mock-up of the published version. Bound in green morocco by Roger de Coverley.
Early Drafts and Finished Poems Published in A Poet's Harvest Home and Various Journals, circa 1878-1884
These poems, originally housed together, were produced in 1878-1884, during a period of intense writing at Penkill Castle, following the publication of Poems in 1875. Most were later published in A Poet's Harvest Home. Titles of individual poems include: "1881," "A Dieu," "Continuity of Life," "Despondency," "Destiny," "Ego," "Infancy," "Love and Death," "The Madonna di San Sisto," "Morality," "My Rhyme of Love," "Of Love, III. Fratelli Alinari was an Italian firm founded in Florence in 1852 by the three Alinari brothers, Romualdo, Leopoldo, and Giuseppe. Fratelli Alinari became one of the largest and most prolific European photography firms of the 19th and 20th centuries. By 1880 the firm employed over 100 people. Alinari specialized in views of Italy and the reproduction of works of art.
