Series II. Legal Practice, 1699-1850 (mostly 1800-1850)
This series, dating from 1699 to 1850, with the bulk of the material dating from 1800 to 1850, relates to Garret D. Wall's legal practice. Wall studied law with Jonathan Rhea (his future father-in-law) before becoming licensed as an attorney in 1804 and as a counselor in 1807. It is not clear if he continued to work with Rhea following his training, but it appears that many of the papers pre-dating Wall's work as a licensed attorney may be related to Rhea's legal practice. Researchers interested Rhea's or Wall's legal work should consult the Jonathan Rhea Legal Papers, 1774-1892 (C0521), the contents of which are extensively linked with this collection.
Series III. Papers of Others, 1750-1909
The material in Series III. Papers of Others dates from 1750 to 1909, and consists largely of papers created by David Rhea, Jonathan Rhea, Robert Rhea, Garret Dorset Wall Vroom, P.D. Vroom, and James W. Wall. There is also miscellaneous material that could not be attributed to any one creator.
Series I. Correspondence, 1792-1849
This series consists of letters to Garret D. Wall from 1792 until his death. The letters are both personal and professional, and many relate to Wall's legal practice as well as his work as a member of the New Jersey Assembly, his service as Quartermaster-General of New Jersey from 1815 to 1827, his work as United States Senator from 1835 to 1841, and his position as Judge of the Court of Appeals in New Jersey from 1848 until his death in 1850. All correspondents are listed at the folder level (with the exception of illegible names), but some of the most frequent correspondents include: George Armitage, Robert Armstrong, Jesse H. Bowen, Charles Coxe, John Coxe, Aaron Ogden Dayton, William P. Deare, Robert DeBow, William Griffith, William N. Jeffers, James Lyle, J.S. Manning, John Patterson, Horace B. Pennock, J.W. Reckless, Jonathan Rhea (his legal teacher and father-in-law), William Ten Eyck, Anne Turnbull, John Vanpelt, P.D. Vroom (son-in-law), William Waln, and Matthias Williamson.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1923-1971
SOME ONLINE CONTENT
The Correspondence series primarily documents Bowman's childhood and young adulthood, from his stay as a boy at a sanitarium in Kansas City for diabetes treatment through his years at Stanford and Princeton. Correspondence between Bowman and his mother, Mary Augusta Brooks Bowman, is particularly rich in part because they wrote each other almost daily and in great detail. Bowman's letters to his mother from Stanford and Princeton, in particular, are lively and quick-witted and reveal his myriad social activities, impressions of college life, and opinions on subjects of all sorts, from family matters to politics to popular films and actors. Correspondence with his father, sister, and brother can be equally revealing but does not match the sheer volume of correspondence between mother and son. Letters from Bowman's friends are also worth noting for their vivid evocations of private school and college life in the 1920s and 1930s. Bowman corresponded with several young women, including a cousin, Edith Brooks, who was traveling in the car with Bowman at the time he was killed. The young women's letters, in particular, contain a vivaciousness and convey their own and Bowman's very active social lives. Bowman also maintained a correspondence over many years with a member of the crew he met on a Cunard Lines voyage he took as a boy with his family. The crew member sent Bowman many letters and postcards from his voyages around the world.
