Series 3, Personal Files, 1942-1977

Series 3, Personal Files 1942-1977, consists of items that document Lockwood's own involvement in the Amerasia case and his service in World War II. The correspondence consists primarily of personal letters of congratulation on Lockwood's September 11, 1955 letter to the New York Times, in which he objected to the Army's decision to forbid John K. Fairbank of Harvard from visiting Japan. In the letter he also stated his objections to the attacks on Philip Jessup and Owen Lattimore. Included in his World War II papers is his 1971 article entitled "The GI in Wartime China." Also of interest are Lockwood's curriculum vitae, drafts of his 1975 and 1976 entries in Who's Who in America and his FBI file.

Series 5: Writings, 1925-2003

The Writings series contains copies of Baker's speeches and articles, typically either offprints or photocopies of publications, with the majority written after his retirement from Bell Labs in 1980. Earlier writings, before 1955, were predominantly technical science papers related to his own chemistry research at Bell Labs. Beginning in 1955, his writings were concerned with the overall focus of Bell Lab's research, communications science and technology, the impact of science on business and government, government support for research, and general analyses on conducting scientific research. Beginning in the 1970s, he also frequently wrote about encouraging innovation in research, the role of science and technology in government and society, and the education system, especially in the sciences. After his retirement in 1980, in addition to continuing to write about these subjects, he also wrote about the future of technology and information systems. Baker also wrote about national materials policy periodically throughout his career.

The Correspondence series spans Baker's entire career at Bell Labs, as well as his advisory work and his retirement. The majority of the correspondence is between Baker and other scientists and scholars discussing recent papers and issues in their fields, as well as invitations to Baker for events and speaking engagements and congratulations to Baker for his various promotions, appointments, and awards. The series also contains correspondence related to his membership and leadership in professional organizations, the management of Bell Labs, correspondence with government officials related to his service on committees and as an advisor, and phone messages taken for Baker.

These include Gibran's studio on West 10th street in New York, his desk at the studio; photos of his grave, the Cedars of Lebanon; and photos of pages from the manuscript The Prophet. Also includes a copy of photograph of Gibran, his bedroom as a child in Lebanon, and a copy of a photograph of Gibran's bedroom which was transported from his New York City Studio apartment to the Museum in Bsharri, Lebanon. Many of the photographs are inscribed on the verso by Shehadi.

William Horne and Ernest Hemingway were lifelong friends. Horne met Hemingway while a volunteer ambulance driver for the American Red Cross during World War I. They were stationed in Schio, Italy, and drove together on the same ambulance. After Hemingway's failed engagement to Agnes von Kurowsky, they shared an apartment in Chicago during the fall of 1920. When Hemingway married Hadley Richardson in September 1921, Horne was in the wedding party. When the writer died in 1961, Horne was an honorary pallbearer. The collection consists of documents, correspondence, photographs, and other papers of William Courtenay (1832-1901), an English settler, veteran of the American Civil War, and frontier businessman who held positions in the United States Department of the Interior as postmaster, clerk, and Indian Agent at Fort Berthold, Dakota Territory, from 1874 to 1882. These materials document conditions at the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation and are of particular interest for their documentation of frontier transactions, corruption and mismanagement within the reservation system, and the relationships between the people of the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara), the Sioux people, and white settlers.

The collection consists of documents, correspondence, photographs, and other papers of William Courtenay (1832-1901), an English settler, veteran of the American Civil War, and frontier businessman who held positions in the United States Department of the Interior as postmaster, clerk, and Indian Agent at Fort Berthold, Dakota Territory, from 1874 to 1882. These materials document conditions at the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation and are of particular interest for their documentation of frontier transactions, corruption and mismanagement within the reservation system, and the relationships between the people of the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara), the Sioux people, and white settlers.

One set contains twenty-six lectures Goheen gave about Greek tragedy. The other set concerns his lectures for the course "The Western Tradition: Man and his Freedom," for the Special Program in the Humanities. The Council on Books in Wartime Records (1942-1947), an organization of publishers and other literary professionals focusing on the promotion of books and reading to further the war effort, consists of records from the preliminary foundation meetings at Times Hall, New York, through the cessation of formal operations in 1946. The major activities of the organization were focused on its two subsidiary publishing ventures, the Armed Services Editions (1943-1947) and the Overseas Editions, Inc. (1944-1945). The Records consist primarily of correspondence of council members, publishers, printers, booksellers, librarians, and the general public. Also present are meeting minutes, press releases, bulletins, radio scripts, contracts, financial records, letters from servicemen, a few photographs of authors and council members, newspaper clippings, and posters. At its last annual meeting in January 1946 the Council's Board of Directors determined that at the end of operations "such records of the Council as merit preservation shall be deposited in an appropriate public institution such as Princeton University Library." Maurice Pate (1894-1965) was an international civil servant who devoted his career to improving the welfare of children. He was involved in a variety of relief efforts during both world wars and their immediate aftermaths, and was the first Executive Director of UNICEF. Pate's papers document his career as a humanitarian and include correspondence, reports, Pate's notes and writings, publications, and photographs, as well as biographical materials and Pate's personal correspondence.

Papaioannou was born in Lamia and grew up in Athens (Greece). She began working as a photographer during the 1930s, concentrating at first on studies of landscapes, monuments and archaeological exhibits. The outbreak of war in 1940 marked a turning point in her career, as she was intensely affected by the suffering of the civilian population of Athens. Realizing the power of her camera to arouse people's conscience, she documented the troops departing for the front, the preparations for the war effort, and the care received by the first casualties. When the capital was in the grip of starvation, she revealed the horrors of war in her moving photographs of emaciated children. After the liberation, as a member of the photographic unit of UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration), she toured the ravaged Greek countryside recording the difficult living conditions faced by its inhabitants. She often exceeded her brief, immortalizing the faces and personal stories of ordinary people in photographs that stressed dignity rather than suffering. During the 1950s Papaioannou's work expressed the optimism that prevailed in the aftermath of the war with respect to both the future of mankind and the restoration of traditional values. Nevertheless, her photographs of the historic Greek landscape are not in the least romantic, but instead portray it as harsh, barren, drenched in light, and its inhabitants proud and independent, despite their poverty. Voula Papaioannou's work represents the trend towards "humanitarian photography" that resulted from the abuse of human rights during the war. John Doar (1921-2014) was a lawyer who worked for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice (1960-1967) and was chief counsel to the House Judiciary Committee investigating the Watergate scandal (1973-1974). He also served as president of the New York City Board of Education (1968-1969) and as president of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Development and Services Corporation (1967-1973). The collection primarily documents Doar's tenure with the Civil Rights Division in the form of court records, investigation files, correspondence, and notes, though materials from Doar's time on the Watergate impeachment inquiry committee and on the Board of Education are also present. To a lesser extent, the collection is composed of records from Doar's work for the Bedford-Stuyvesant Corporation and his private law practice.
