Princeton University Library Collection of Kōstas Zēmerēs Photographs, 1900-1999

Kostas Zēmerēs was born in 1886 in Katēchōri Pelion. He studied at the Commercial School of Volos, where he took his first lessons from the painter Iōannēs Poulakas. In 1904 he went to the United States where he worked in photo labs collaborating with painters and photographers. There he had the opportunity to study at the Art Institute of Saint Louis. He returned to Greece in 1912 where he was recruited during the Balkan Wars. Later, after the World War I, he remained in Athens working with great photographers, such as George Bouka and Nelly's. Finally he returned to Volos where he worked as a professional photographer and painter. He participated in many exhibitions in Greece and abroad, such as in Calais (France) in 1925 and Liverpoool (England) in 1926. He received the gold medal at the International Exhibition of Thessalonikē (Greece) in 1932 and 1936. Zēmerēs gave us the unique photographs of the painter Theophilos Chatzēmichaēl. He died at the age of 96. Consists of an open collection of silver prints depicting Greek landscapes by Kōstas Zēmerēs.

The debates over the value of recruiting and admitting alumni sons, war veterans, athletes, disadvantaged students (especially racial minorities), and women are reflected in the records of the Admission Office. This collection includes a number of reports and minutes, some of which are restricted, news clippings and releases about Princeton admission, historical materials, and a series of Admission Office publications.

Jacob Viner (1892-1970) is considered one of the greatest economists of the twentieth century. His career was spent at the University of Chicago and Princeton University, and he also frequently served as an advisor to the United States government. His primary academic interests included international economics, international economic relations, and the history of economic thought, but his investigations ranged across many disciplines. Viner's papers document his scholarship, as well as his government service, and include correspondence, manuscripts, reports, and research materials.

The American Civil Liberties Union Records document the activities of the Union in protecting individual rights from 1920 through 1995. The files contain materials on freedom of speech, expression, and association; due process of law; equality before the law; legal case files; and organizational records. Within these categories files reflect subject areas such as academic freedom, censorship, racial discrimination, aliens' rights, privacy concerns, labor concerns, amnesty, and government loyalty and security. The files reflect work on litigation, advocacy and public policy, and subject files on various areas of interest connected with civil liberties. Alan Reitman began working for the ACLU in 1948 as publicity director, then later served as assistant director, 1951-1957, and associate director, 1957-1990. The first five boxes (2.1 linear feet) contain correspondence, memoranda, reports, and statements covering the years 1948-1986 and document Reitman's role in ACLU operations. The subseries is arranged chronologically by year and alphabetically by subject within each year.

This subseries (9.66 linear feet) primarily contains the records of Trudi Schutz. Schutz served as Press Director (1974-1975) and Director of the Public Information and Education Office (1975-1987). The records are arranged under two headings: subject files and affiliates, with the materials arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within each subject.

George Field Collection of Freedom House Files, 1933-1990 (mostly 1941-1969)

This collection contains George Field's files of the organization Freedom House (1933-1990; Bulk Dates 1941-1969). Freedom House was formed in October 1941 as an organization dedicated to the defense of freedom throughout the world--a cause perceived to be in great danger. Founding members included George Field, Dorothy Thompson, Wendell L. Willkie, Herbert Agar, Herbert Bayard Swope, and Rex Stout. These and other members had been involved in both Fight For Freedom and in the New York Chapter of the Committee to Defend America By Aiding the Allies. Freedom House carried on the spirit of these two organizations by acting as a clearing house of information. Its first agenda was to work, during World War II, to prepare the country for peace, and then after the war to continue to defend peace and freedom throughout the world. Throughout the period from 1941 to 1967 George Field was the Executive Director of Freedom House and was in charge of the day-to-day activities as well as the long-range planning for the organization. These records reflect Field's position in Freedom House during this time. The collection contains only the records that George Field retained from Freedom House, not the official records of the organization. Included in these records are Field's copies of Freedom House meeting minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, publications and writings, financial files, legal files, and photographs.

The Hamilton Fish Armstrong Papers consist of correspondence, notebooks, memoranda, material from 1945 United Nations Conference on International Organization, writings especially in relation to Peace and Counterpeace and Tito and Goliath, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs.
