Subseries 1A: Complete and Final Minutes of Faculty Meetings, 1781-2010

The Complete and Final Minutes subseries groups together the faculty minutes in their bound, final form. The eighteenth and nineteenth century minutes consist mostly of entries written carefully in minutes books; the minutes from the twentieth century to the present also include printed reports and documents from various committees. Minutes from the later half of the twentieth century to the present include an agenda for the next meeting. Beginning in 1968 and ending in 1984, abstracts (or summaries) were created in the interest of transparency. These abstracts form subseries 1B and, from June 1970 to June 1984, are not restricted. Since 1984, the clerk of the faculty no longer wrote up an abstract in addition to minutes, and simply wrote abstracts as if they were the actual minutes. For this reason, the minutes of the faculty from 1984 to the present are not restricted. Clerks of the faculty changed frequently, and they each put their own stamp on the format and content of the minutes.

The Faculty Meetings and Minutes series consists of minutes and other materials related to the meetings of the full Princeton University faculty from 1781 until the present. The minutes, their drafts, and their appendices have been compiled over the years by the Clerk of the Faculty (a professor appointed by the faculty), with secretarial assistance from the Dean of the Faculty's office.

The Department of Facilities at Princeton University is responsible for the construction, maintenance, renovation, and financial management of the buildings and properties owned by the university. The Department of Facilities records document the daily activities of the department and its numerous divisions through blueprints, photographs, correspondence, memos, sketches, contracts, ledgers, tax returns, incorporation papers, by-laws, annual reports, financial statements, newspaper clippings, booklets, and meeting minutes.

Series 3: Student-generated publications are those documents composed by enrolled undergraduate or graduate students. Several 19th century student publications are present, including some of the earliest known student newspapers, such as The Balance (1802) which provides an account of a Nassau Hall fire, and The Chameleon, written by the Class of 1835. The series also includes special editions and joke issues of the Daily Princetonian, such as The Gaily Printsanything (circa 1920s). In addition, the years 1969 and 1996 saw particular literary flourishing, with the inception of several student-generated magazines consisting of a few issues before the magazines' discontinuation. In a few cases, the records of the creating organization are included with copies of the publications.
Series 9: Duplicate Publications for Digitization, 1822-2018

Series 9 contains duplicates of Princeton University publications. These publications include announcements, catalogues, official registers, phone books, reports, student publications and year books. These are incomplete runs to be used for digitization.

A significant portion of publications in this series contains information for students such as freshman and sophomore academic guides; the booklet on academic policies, Rights, Rules and Responsibilities; orientation schedules, and related materials. This series also contains publications intended for potential Princeton students, such as Princeton Profile. Also present in this series are newsletters produced by academic departments and programs, as well as the Princeton Art Museum.

Some of the materials were consulted by John Lewis Gaddis as part of his research for his biography of Kennan prior to the materials' transfer to the Mudd Library. The materials in this series are occasionally annotated by either Joan Kennan or John Lewis Gaddis.

Kennan (1904-2005) was a diplomat and a historian, noted especially for his influence on United States policy towards the Soviet Union during the Cold War and for his scholarly expertise in the areas of Russian history and foreign policy. Kennan's papers document his career as a scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study and his time in the Foreign Service, and include his correspondence files, published and unpublished writings, and personal files.

The correspondence files reveal the depth and breadth of Rossi's involvement in a variety of intellectual circles in Mexico and abroad. While the format may have changed over the years from typed or handwritten letters to faxes and emails, the regularity and discipline with which Rossi corresponds with his friends and associates does not at all diminish. If anything, it even flourishes in later years.

William Jovanovich (1920-2001) was an American publisher, author, and businessman, who led the publishing firm Harcourt Brace Jovanovich from 1954 to 1991, as president and later as chief executive officer. The collection consists of Jovanovich's author and publisher files, including an extensive file on Charles A. Lindbergh, along with correspondence, writings, personal and family papers, memorabilia, and other files documenting his career as a major American publisher in the 20th century, his creative pursuits in fiction and nonfiction, and his interest in Yugoslav literature and textbook publishing.
Subseries 3B: Chronological Correspondence, 1945-2006
This subseries consists of correspondence that Jovanovich filed chronologically, including both personal and business correspondence. For the years 1948 to 1952, correspondence consists of photocopies rather than the original letters, and there is a gap in correspondence during the mid-1950s. Correspondence for the late 1990s and 2000s is increasingly personal in nature.
Series 3: Correspondence, 1945-2006
This series contains William Jovanovich's general correspondence, with the exception of author and publisher correspondence, which can be found in Series 1: Author and Publisher Files and Series 2: Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Files. Correspondence in this series spans personal and professional topics, following three different original filing systems: alphabetical by correspondent name, chronological, and topical. Correspondence regards Harcourt Brace Jovanovich's publishing activities, Jovanovich's own writings, and personal relationships with fellow professionals and former employees, among other subjects.

The Alumni Association of Nassau Hall, Princeton's first official organization of alumni, was founded on commencement day 1826. The collection consists primarily of administrative materials such as correspondence, meeting minutes, notebooks and reports belonging to both national and regional associations and their committees, most from the first half of the 20th century. Also contains newsletters, alumni directories, scrapbooks, reunion-related ephemera, photographs, and materials documenting reunions and alumni organization activities from the late 19th century forward.
