Included are photographs and documents on Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, the St. Marks poetry project, and avant-garde artists and performers. The papers include transcripts and audiocassette tapes of Ruas's interviews with authors and artists, as well as typescripts and galleys of work by writers Ruas edited, including Marguerite Young, and some related photographs, notes, recordings, and correspondence. Consists of photographic prints, contact sheets, and negatives, primarily in black-and-white, including shots taken in the WBAI studio in New York City, as well as promotional photographs and portraits gifted to Ruas by authors and artists with whom he worked. Most of the photographs taken in the WBAI studio are by Joan Schwartz, including images of various authors reading from Marguerite Young's Miss MacIntosh, My Darling, as well as a number of photographs of poets reading at a New Year's Eve poetry reading at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery in 1975. In addition to containing photographs of many of the writers and artists reflected elsewhere throughout this collection, musicians and composers like Patti Smith, Lou Reed, and Phillip Glass are also represented in this group of photographs. Also of note is a group of portraits and photographs of performances by Babette Mangolte. While most photographic materials in the collection are described here, some, which were originally kept with manuscript materials and ephemera, are described with the general Author and Artist Files.

Author and Artist Files, 1960-2020

Consists of typescript drafts, editorial copies, galleys, dust jacket proofs, and notes by other writers with whom Charles Ruas collaborated, including materials he received as gifts from authors, as well as materials directly related to books he edited. Writers represented include Marguerite Young, Susan Howe, Helen Adam, Djuna Barnes, and Susan Sontag. Most prominent are several works by American writer Marguerite Young, including materials regarding her epic biography Harp Song for a Radical: The Life and Times of Eugene Victor Debs. Ruas edited the unfinished manuscript after Young fell ill and could no longer continue writing the third part. The biography was posthumously published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1999. Several draft versions are present, including a copy of Young's 1742-page original draft, Ruas's working editorial draft, and his edited typescript of Part I with a group of unedited cut pages following it. A spiral notebook, containing Young's manuscript draft of a section of the book on Allan Pinkerton, along with some handwritten notes Young made on diner checks, are also included. In the last few years of her life, when she was very sick, Marguerite Young abandoned nonfiction and returned to writing poetry. Present here are Ruas's set of photocopied typescript and manuscript drafts of Young's last poems, most of which remain unpublished, Young's guide sheet for an unrealized dramatization of her earlier book Angel in the Forest, and a carbon copy of the original typescript of the first two chapters of Miss MacIntosh, My Darling, with handwritten corrections by Young, that the author inscribed and gifted to Ruas. Also of note is a typescript of an early book of collected poems by Susan Howe, Ruas's friend and poetry co-host at WBAI-FM. There are also several commercially available CDs of music and poetry recordings that Ruas collected.

Series 8: Family Papers, 1866-2005

Material related to Frederick Morgan's family. Though consisting mostly of correspondence, these papers also include a range of other material associated with individual family members. For example, Morgan's son Seth published a novel, Homeboy, and his files include clippings of reviews for the book. The most extensive files in this series [relate to] Morgan's first wife, Constance, and to Morgan's mother, Marion Morgan. The correspondence between Morgan and his first wife runs to several hundred letters, and the two were particularly active correspondents during the period of Morgan's military service when they often wrote each other multiple letters in a single day. The files for Marion Morgan span a particularly long period, from 1930 to 1988, and contain extensive correspondence between her and her son in which they often discuss family news and events.

This collection documents the life and activities of Sylvia Beach (1887-1962), the American author, publisher, and owner of the Paris bookshop Shakespeare & Company, the Paris bookshop that was a meeting-point for French, English, Irish and American writers during the 1920's and 1930's. The collection consists largely of files relating to Shakespeare & Company; Beach's writings and translations, in particular her memoir Shakespeare & Company ; and files relating to the circle of artists and writers surrounding her throughout her life. Included are family, personal, and business correspondence; business records of Shakespeare & Company; personal and family records; manuscripts and artwork by members of her circle; photographs; and memorabilia.

Sylvia Beach's Circle and Collections consists of items collected by Sylvia Beach, documenting two overlapping collecting activities: Sylvia Beach's incidental files on artists in her circle (not directly relating to her publication activities, which are documented in the Shakespeare Company series), and her more formal literary and art collections. The boundary between the two collection activities is fluid, and there are several documented cases in which Beach later formalized collections that were originally created out of personal interest or for reference or business purposes (most notably, her collection of Joyce material, which she largely sold to the University of Buffalo, and her collection of Whitman manuscripts, originally keepsakes she inherited from her aunt and which she later exhibited and offered for sale). The series further contains information on exhibitions of Beach's collections and on the sale of collection items to various cultural institutions.

Many clubs are represented, including the Bachelor's Club, Dial Lodge, The Monastery, the Princeton Terrace Club, the Quadrangle Club, Stevenson Hall (a non-bicker University-managed dining facility) and the Tower Club. Among the types of materials in the series are anniversary publications, newsletters, scrapbooks, program files, photographs, meeting minutes and fundraising campaign materials. Tower Club records from the 1970s through the 1990s, such as fundraising files, financial records, and board of trustees meeting minutes, comprise a large portion of the series. This sub-series contains two boxes of material received from the Colonial Club in 2015. It contains correspondence related to undergraduate, graduate and associate membership, methods of admitting sophomores, correspondence related to buildings, operations, and fundraising, administrative and financial documents, and the minutes from club meetings, annual meetings, and Board of Governors meetings. The material reflects the history and operations of the club, both social and financial. It includes lists of undergraduates eligible for election to upperclass clubs, insights into club leadership, personal and general correspondence with members, documents showing income and expenses, changes in rules, by-laws, and the club constitution, and interactions with the Prospect Foundation and Graduate Inter-Club Council, among others. Subjects discussed in both meeting minutes and correspondence are additions to, furnishing and decorations of the club building, fees for membership and board, wedding gifts for members, holiday gifts for staff, bicker procedures, the cooperative buying plan of the 1920s, colors, hatbands and memorabilia, and so on.

Series 2: Correspondence and Administrative Files, 1939-2011

The records in Series 2: Correspondence and Administrative Files were accumulated by members of the Nassoons Alumni Association and document the group's concert, performance, and recording schedules over seven decades. Found in this series will be letters sent to the Nassoons from other colleges inviting them to perform on their respective campuses as well as notebooks pertaining to the group's administration. The series also contains intermittent group photographs of the organization.

They include files Goheen kept as a graduate student, instructor and professor in Princeton University's Department of Classics for the period 1939-1957. The collection also contains U.S. army records for 1942-1945, when Goheen had interrupted his studies for service in the Second World War, and for 1945-1956, when he served in the Officers Reserve Corps. The majority of the files concern Goheen's post-presidential years, when he was Chair of the Council on Foundations (1972-1977), Ambassador to India (1977-1980), and Director of the Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities (1981-1998), as well as Senior Fellow Public and International Affairs at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School. In addition, the collection contains some speech notes Goheen kept and some photographs of Goheen from his tenure as President of Princeton University.

Reports, Sermons, Ephemera, and School Materials, 1890-1997

Materials also pertain to Dubois Morris's missionary work and consist of annual reports to and from the Central Presbyterian Church in New York City, NY, and annual reports from Huaiyuan. There are also sermon outlines, notes, and talks. There are several school papers and a heavily annotated Bible, likely from Dubois Morris's time at Harvard University and/or Columbia University while he was completing his postgraduate theological studies. There are cabinet cards from Morris's time at Princeton, and materials related to his inclusion in the Class of 1893, including Class Day booklets, directories, reunion books, etc. from the decades following. There are a couple of booklets on membership rules and bylaws for other organizations, such as The Pilgrims, the Quill Club, and the Shanghai Tiffin Club. There is a small amount of family papers, including a paper from Dubois Morris's younger brother, James Edgar Morris; and 1997 journal entries and photographs of a trip to Huaiyuan from Robert Morris, Dubois Morris's grandson. The scrapbooks consist of an 1898 scrapbook pertaining to George Candee Buell's passing; a bridal book containing information about the bridal party, engagement gifts, and wedding gifts, with loose scraps and notes; a Huaiyuan photograph album from 1912; and a photograph album which appears to contain photographs from Alice Buell Morris's schooldays and of her travels.
