The American Whig-Cliosophic Society (1941-present) is a literary, political and debating society which has had an important impact on the lives of generations of Princeton students. It provides students with both social alternatives and an opportunity to develop skills not emphasized by the University curriculum. The contents of the initial group of records were acquired between 1941 and 1993 in agreements between Princeton University and the American Whig-Cliosophic Society. The library initially cataloged some of these records into the P Collection. Subsequently, an attempt was made to organize some of these records in 1975.

The Debate Panel is Princeton University's intercollegiate debating team. The series contains the Panel's correspondence dealing with its competitions against teams from other American colleges and universities as well as activity reports and internal administrative material. Activity reports collect the results and social activities of the panel at all of the tournaments the members attended during a particular academic year; after 1968 these activity reports are called Style Reports. For material dealing with intercollegiate debating at Princeton before 1928, see the Cliosophic Society Records (AC# 016) Series XI: Joint Documents with Whig; Debating Committee, Boxes 85-87. Toni Morrison (born Chloe Ardelia Wofford, 1931-2019) was a Nobel prize-winning American author, editor, and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. The material described in this finding aid consists of manuscripts, drafts, galleys, and proofs of Morrison's novels and other writings; personal correspondence; editorial files relating to Morrison's work at Random House and later publication of two posthumous works by Toni Cade Bambara; academic and teaching files, particularly pertaining to SUNY Albany and Princeton University; working files; press clippings; published books, photographs, audiovisual materials, and awards and memorabilia.

Consists of the works of others such as Odyssea Elytēs, Alexandros Kotzias, and Miltos Sachtourēs, as well as others.

Series 2: Board and Staff Members contains primarily correspondence with board and staff members of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, as well as a few sets of files maintained by the board or staff members themselves.

Since 1950, the Princeton University Library has been successful in acquiring additional manuscripts and related materials to complement the F. Scott Fitzgerald Papers (C0187). The F. Scott Fitzgerald Additional Papers (C0188) is comprised of Fitzgerald manuscripts (including his published juvenilia), letters, documents, photographs, tape recordings, memorabilia, and other materials donated by the author's family, friends, and publishers.

Consists of sketches of Zelda Fitzgerald, as well as additional correspondence and articles.

Consists of periodicals and brochures related to F. Scott Fitzgerald and his family, keepsakes, clippings, and media material.

The records of the Physics Department document the scientific and teaching activities of Princeton University physicists from 1909 to 1962. While routine activities such as the hiring of faculty and the education of graduate and undergraduate students are recorded, these records also detail the Department's activities in early studies of theoretical physics, as well as its participation in World War II research activities. There is also a small amount of material that documents Milton White's efforts toward builing the cyclotron (1936).

The Department of French and Italian as it exists today at Princeton University originated in 1958 when the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures was split into the separate departments of Romance and Germanic Languages and Literatures. Consists of the records of the contemporary Department of French and Italian, collected while it was operating as the Department of Modern Languages and later the Department of Romance Languages and Literature.

Consists of personal and family papers of Robert Sundance collected by Marc Gaede, including drafts of short writings by Sundance (some of which contain revisions by Gaede), correspondence, documents, and photographs of Sundance throughout his life as well as of his family members.

Consists of comprehensive working files for a biography of Robert Sundance, which was published by Chaco Press as Sundance: The Robert Sundance Story in 1994. Marc Gaede and Robert Sundance first met in 1986 after Sundance spoke out in defense of Gaede's controversial book Bordertowns, which depicted alcoholism in Native American communities. In 1990, Sundance and the Gaedes agreed to collaborate on Sundance's biography, which they worked on from 1990 to 1993, with Marc Gaede composing the text of the biography from recordings of Sundance telling his story and Marnie Gaede providing editorial guidance. Fifty-four audiocassette tapes containing recordings of Sundance's oral history are present, as well as transcriptions, drafts of the biography in both paper and digital form, and administrative correspondence regarding publishing and editorial matters. There is also a significant group of legal research files compiled and annotated by Sundance during the 1970s and 1980s, which include court documents, clippings, and publicity materials regarding his case, as well as other American Indian rights issues. A smaller group of personal and family papers of Robert Sundance includes other writings by him, correspondence, personal documents, and family and childhood photographs.

The Research Files series contains notes, drafts, and correspondence related to Ryder's various projects. Additionally, some folders contain finished publications.

Norman B. Ryder (1923-2010) was a demographer and sociologist who specialized in fertility studies and established the cohort approach to demographic study. The Ryder papers contain his working research notes, drafts, and publications, as well as correspondence and administrative papers from Ryder's teaching career.

Includes personal of Alonso's early life, family, literary figures, and professional endeavors. Also includes photographic reproductions of literary figures Alonso collected.

Rodolfo Alonso is an Argentine poet, translator, essayist, and editor. The collection includes Alonso's correspondence with various Latin American writers including Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Raúl Gustavo Aguirre, Juan Gelman, Augusto Roa Bastos, Juan José Saer, Ernesto Sábato, Lêdo Ivo, Hector Tizón, Edgar Bayley, António Ramos Rosa, Milton de Lima Sousa, and Claudio Magris. In addition, the collection includes photographs of Alonso throughout his career with many Latin American figures as well as a personal collection of his family and travels.

Alonso is pictured with groups that include, but are not limited to, Ramiro Casasbellas, Jorge Carrol, Raúl Gustavo Aguirre, Juan Carlos Paz, Nicolás Espiro, Horacio Armani, José Peroni, Libero Badii, Eduardo Serón, María Elena Walsh, Edgar Bayley.

Family papers include correspondence, personal documents, clippings, photographs, and other materials related to the Keeley family, the Vossler family, the Morgan family, and the Stathatos-Kyris family, including correspondence of Mary Keeley and her mother, Hélène Kyris.

Cavafy, Odysseus Elytēs, Giannēs Ritsos, and George Seferis, and for anthologies he edited, including A Century of Greek Poetry, 1900-2000 and W. W. Norton's The Greek Poets: Homer to the Present. Additional personal, family, and professional correspondence, files on Keeley's lectures, grants, and work with various international organizations, writings by fellow poets and translators, personal documents and memorabilia, and printed materials are also present.

Slides include images of Ruth Bernhard's work, work by other friends and photographers, as well as personal photographs from travels and events.

This subseries includes fine art photographs and artwork by others, gifts, personal effects, and other memorabilia collected by Ruth Bernhard for sentimental value. The majority of materials in this subseries consist of photographs and artwork given to Bernhard by others, often personally inscribed to her and occasionally accompanied by related correspondence. Prominently featured are photographers Michael Kenna and Saïd Nuseibeh, both of whom worked as printers for Bernhard for many years and whose independent photographic careers she followed. Works by friends and students Abraham Aronow, Norman Jensen, Peter Adams, and Alfonso Malato de Sousa also appear frequently.

This subseries consists of a file run kept by Ruth Bernhard, primarily including business correspondence related to publishing, permissions, print sales, workshops, teaching engagements, video appearances, interviews, exhibitions, and the sale of her photographic archive, along with some personal correspondence, such as fan mail and birthday cards, as well as occasional snapshots, address books, and articles where Bernhard's work was featured or reviewed.

Incorporated as The Melody Company by Abraham Meyers in 1911, the firm was purchased in 1967 by Princeton alumnus Charles H. Rose (Class of 1950) and his wife. By offering comic strips--the plates for printing them--to small newspapers, the firm was able to secure advertising space, which it sold to national advertisers seeking wider, more regional coverage. Advertisers knew the firm as The Meyers List; newspapers knew it as International Cartoons Limited. The company was dissolved on 20 March 1997, and its printing plates were distributed to various museums and repositories, including Princeton University. Consists of assorted records of the American Melody Company and its corporate aliases (Meyers List Inc. and International Cartoons Limited), including minute and stock books, corporate seals, scrapbooks of cartoon strips, copies of contracts with advertisers, trademark registrations, and dissolution documents.

Richard C. Holbrooke was an American diplomat who led negotiations at the Dayton Accords for peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995. The Richard C. Holbrooke Papers contain Holbrooke's subject files, records of public statements, correspondence, writings and drafts of writings, articles and periodicals, and audiovisual materials.

The Biographical series contains materials regarding Baker's career and life and includes articles, interviews and oral histories, his diaries, awards and appointments, family correspondence, photographs, and weekly schedules for his retirement years. The articles include papers written by and about Baker regarding his life, as well as materials collected by A. Michael Noll on three CDs. The earlier diaries include references to his research at Bell Labs, while diaries beginning in the 1950s are predominantly concerned with his daily life. The awards and appointments materials include awards certificates, correspondence about accepted the awards and congratulations, his acceptance speeches, programs, and articles. Most awards are from academic and professional organizations or corporations for his contributions to science, from government agencies for his service, and honorary degrees from universities. The photographs include portraits of Baker, Baker receiving awards, at events, or with members of boards he served on, and personal photographs of unidentified people and landscapes. The weekly schedules record meetings and events that Baker attended, and also include correspondence about the events, itineraries, and expenses.

William O. Baker (1915-2005) was a prominent research chemist, head of Bell Laboratories, and a frequent advisor to the government on scientific affairs and technology. His government service spanned from the Truman administration through the Bush administration and focused on intelligence gathering and national security issues. Baker's papers document his government service beginning with President Eisenhower, as well as his career at Bell Labs, and include correspondence, writings, and reports.

Consists of correspondence with individuals such as Sherwood Anderson, e. e. Cummings, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Marianne Moore, Katherine Anne Porter, and Edmund Wilson, as well as others.

John Peale Bishop (Princeton Class of 1917) was a noted author, poet, and editor. This collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, documents, drawings, printed materials, and memorabilia of Bishop.

This collection consists of correspondence of the New York City literary agency Harold Ober Associates, Inc. and its three London affiliates. Established by Harold Ober (1881-1959) in the 1920s, the agency quickly grew in size and reputation, and has been considered one of the leading representatives for American and British writers in the world. The correspondence includes letters between the agency or affiliates and clients, editors, publishers, and other agents. Also included are other organizational files, such as date books and financial ledgers.

Anton Tedesko (1903-1994) was a German-born American structural engineer, best known for his extensive work in reinforced thin-shell concrete design, often on significant industrial, institutional, and government construction projects, largely in the United States during World War II and the Cold War. The papers consist of Tedesko's writings, correspondence, calculations, engineering drawings and designs, personal papers, photographs, reference materials and technical journals, along with some film reels and glass lantern slides, including materials from his time at the Dyckerhoff & Widmann and Roberts & Schaefer firms, representing his professional work and activities from the 1920s through the 1990s.

Includes some original calculations for the project and clippings. Materials from the 21st century include correspondence between Professor David P. Billington and Ed Saliklis of Lafayette College, along with Saliklis's research and writings on the skating hall.

Howard C. Petersen (1910-1995) was an expert in international economics and foreign trade. He served in the War Department under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as Assistant Secretary of War for President Harry S. Truman, as National Finance Chairman and fundraiser for the Dwight D. Eisenhower campaigns, and as Special Assistant on International Trade for President John F. Kennedy. Petersen was also a principal drafter of the Selective Service Act, a lawyer, and president of Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Company. Petersen's papers document his entire career, especially his work with the new Security and Exchange Commission regulations as a lawyer in the 1930s and with the United States War Department during World War II, and include correspondence, articles, and publications.

The Biography series contains articles about Petersen, correspondence, publications from institutions he was involved with, programs for events, and photographs. The institutions include The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, The George C. Marshall Foundation, and universities where he received honorary degrees.

Consists of papers and photographs of Alison Frantz (1903-1995), a classicist who was the photographer and specialist in Early Christian and Byzantine archaeology for the Agora excavations at Athens from 1933 to 1968 for the American School of Classical Studies.

Series 1, Subseries 1, Subject Files, 1916-1994, contains incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, reports, clippings, manuscripts, speeches, press releases and publications, and is filed alphabetically by author or subject. The subject files mainly document Ball's life prior to his appointment as under secretary of state for economic affairs and after his resignation as ambassador to the United Nations. These files contain information on a myriad of subjects in which Ball was involved or interested. His careers are well documented in this subseries, including his work on the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, which included the interrogation of Albert Speer, his years spent at Cleary, Gottlieb, and his international banking experience gained at Lehman Brothers.

Series 1, Correspondence, 1916-1994, contains two subseries, Subject Files and Chron Files, and chronicles Ball's life from childhood to death.

This series contains materials in various formats related to Ramírez's political activities and it also includes materials that Ramírez kept about Nicaraguan political history, especially about Sandino, Somoza, and the Nicaraguan revolution.

Sergio Ramírez has been a leading Nicaraguan author and politician. In 1977 Ramírez became head of the "Group of Twelve", a group of prominent intellectuals who supported the struggle of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) against the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle. With the triumph of the Revolution in 1979, he became part of the Junta of the Government of National Reconstruction and in 1984 he was elected vice-president under Daniel Ortega. The collection consists of manuscripts of his writings, source materials, personal, literary and political correspondence, papers and documents related to Ramírez's political career and to Nicaraguan political history, writings of others, photographs, and graphic and printed materials.

This series consists of photographs and graphic materials, some related to Ramírez's activities, some not.

Richard Ullman (1933-2014) was a scholar of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs. The collection documents Ullman's career as an academic, his service with the U.S. State Department and the Council on Foreign Relations, and his process of researching and publishing the three-volume Anglo-Soviet Relations, 1917-1971.

These records are composed of mostly correspondence and subject files that were created in the course of Ullman's work as an academic, primarily at Princeton University, and in various other positions he held during his career, such as his term on the editorial board of The New York Times. The records also include some of Ullman's published articles and what appear to be notes and research prepared for lectures on European governments and foreign policies. Of note is Ullman's correspondence with well-known individuals in the field of foreign policy, particularly George Kennan.

The American Civil Liberties Union Records document the activities of the Union in protecting individual rights from 1920 through 1995. The files contain materials on freedom of speech, expression, and association; due process of law; equality before the law; legal case files; and organizational records. Within these categories files reflect subject areas such as academic freedom, censorship, racial discrimination, aliens' rights, privacy concerns, labor concerns, amnesty, and government loyalty and security. The files reflect work on litigation, advocacy and public policy, and subject files on various areas of interest connected with civil liberties. Materials include correspondence, court documents, memoranda, printed matter, minutes, reports, briefs, and legal files. Also included are materials from ACLU affiliate organizations, and the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Committee.

This subseries consists of material suitable for display, such as bumper stickers, buttons, flyers, and other ephemeral materials related to Amnesty Project, the call for the impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon, the ACLU in general, and miscellaneous organizations and causes.

Clinton A. Decker traveled to Russia as part of the American Advisory Commission to Russia of Railway Experts (1917) and later became a member of the Inter-Allied Technical Board (1919-1922). The collection contains personal and business correspondence and photographs documenting Decker's travels in Russia, China, and Japan.

Publication files comprise the majority of the collection and include correspondence, legal and financial documents, and editorial and production files related to specific authors and publications. While most of these materials are filed by author name and/or publication title, there are also some general files of manuscripts described as "rejected," "unsolicited," or "dead." Production files include photographs and illustrations, jacket covers, correspondence related to permissions, and other design-related materials.

Consists of the publishing and administrative records of Weidenfeld & Nicolson, a British publishing company founded by George Weidenfeld (1919-2016) and Nigel Nicolson (1917-2004), which specialized in literary fiction and nonfiction, with an emphasis on history, biographies and memoirs, books by world leaders and political figures, glossy illustrated books, travel guides, and reference books. The collection documents the operations of the firm from its establishment in 1948 through its sale in 1991, and also includes some later records from as recent as 2012 related to its continued operation as an imprint of the Orion Publishing Group.

Administrative files primarily consist of general correspondence, including correspondence with editors, translators, proofreaders, and publishing companies, as well as some financial and legal documents, meeting minutes, interdepartmental communications, and general files related to publicity, sales, distribution, personnel, and operations.

Contains advertisements for reissues of children's series such as Dick and Jane and Little Golden Books and replicas of toys from the 1930's and 1940's.

The Office of Development is the centralized administrative unit which oversees Princeton University's many fundraising programs, including Annual Giving, the 1746 Society, Endowment Gifts, Bequests, and more. Consists of files of the Princeton University Office of Development pertaining to several major fundraising campaigns including the 1919 Endowment Campaign and the "53 Million Campaign".

Series 10: Office of Stewardship, Canadian Princeton Alumni Fund Records include founding corporate documents, directors' and annual members' meeting minutes, annual reports and related materials from its founding in 1959 to its dissolution in 1997.

The General Files Subseries documents portions of the administrative functions of the Council. It includes subject files on various administrative matters, including rules and policies of the Council, relations with other organizations (including the Royal Institute of International Affairs, the Council's parallel organization in London), fundraising, and records on legal issues such as breaches of confidentiality, as well as attacks on and critiques of the Council. Other information included in this subseries documents anniversary planning and the history of the Harold Pratt House, the Council's New York headquarters. This subseries includes some significant documents from the Council's formative years, such as documents on the "Anglo-American Institute of Foreign Affairs," and information on the merger between its American branch and the existing Council on Foreign Relations (and materials from that earlier body); early drafts of a charter and statements of purpose, early correspondence, meeting minutes and membership lists; and documents on the development of the Foreign Affairs journal.

The Records of Groups Subseries consists of the records of a wide-ranging run of study groups formed to discuss policy with regards to American interests in regions and specific nations around the globe. Topics include labor relations, military build-up, trade negotiations, and technological (and corresponding social) advances. Material within the Records of Groups Subseries documents the progress and output of the groups themselves as they studied topics of international importance.

The Administration Series of the Council on Foreign Relations contains records relating to the general operations of the organization, including subject files on administrative matters, files from the Executive Office of the Council, Library and Archive records and materials documenting the various trips offered to members of the Council. In general, this series contains departmental records not falling under any of the other series.

This series contains one scrapbook compiled by Oliver, of articles (1934-1947) by and about her, press clippings of Oliver's published fiction and nonfiction, spanning 1918 to the 1960s(?), and printed articles about Oliver (1920s?-1988). The printed material includes short stories by Oliver and reviews of Oliver's books, including Mundo, mi casa, La vida cotidiana, and the posthumously-published Mi fe es el hombre. There is also a photocopy of Geografía Argentina, a book (26 pp.) for children, with text by María Rosa Oliver, published in Buenos Aires, in 1939. The series is arranged with the author's scrapbook first, followed by the printed material by or about Oliver in chronological order. Finally, there is one folder of miscellaneous printed material saved by Oliver, filed at the end.

The Administration Subseries details the administrative work necessary to support the Study Groups of the Council. Subject files include records relating to programming, budget, staff files, and Studies Administration and Staff meeting records. The Miscellaneous files at the end of this subseries contain mainly memos and correspondence from the Study Group administration, but also lists, booklets, papers, and reports.

The Council on Foreign Relations is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and national membership organization dedicated to promoting improved understanding of international affairs and to contributing ideas to United States foreign policy. The Studies Department Series documents the planning and execution of the various study groups (including discussion groups, current issue review groups, seminars, workshops and conferences) and projects.

The Publications subseries contains reports, pamphlets, and other publications by the ACLU and ACLU projects on the full range of civil rights issues addressed by the ACLU, including their "The Rights Of..." series of handbooks and "The Civil Liberties Review." The subseries also includes briefing books on HIV and anti-gay ballot initiatives, which are studies and information collected by the ACLU on these issues.

The Printed and Audiovisual Materials series contains the published works of the ACLU, including publications, audio recordings, and videos. These include educational materials published by the ACLU, newsletters, press releases, and public appearances and interviews with ACLU staff.

Robert Vossler Keeley ('51) was a U.S. Foreign Service member and writer who served in a number of posts. The Robert V. Keeley Papers consist of reports, correspondence, writings, journals, and photographs from the breadth of Keeley's career, including his Foreign Service postings in Uganda, Cambodia, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and Greece, as well as correspondence and other materials created and kept by Robert Keeley's wife, Louise Keeley.

Includes presentation copies of journals, offprints, and articles; miscellaneous copies of journals and offprints; ephemera; and newspaper clippings, many of which are book reviews by Kermode.

This subseries consists of the writings of Kermode divided into the categories of books, essays/lectures, reviews, academic materials and miscellaneous notes/notebooks.

Series 1: Production Files, 1919-1996 consists of correspondence, clippings, records, photographs, scripts, printed materials, etc. related to Theatre Intime productions.

Series 2: Photograph Files, 1919-1996 consists of original photographs removed from Series 1: Production Files during processing.

Subseries 4A: Administrative and Production Files, 1937-2006 consists of files that often include a broad range of materials about Theatre Intime productions: plans, scripts, programs, photographs, clippings, etc. It also includes Theatre Intime newsletters, subscription letters, accounting books, and similar administrative materials.

The Miscellaneous subseries includes publications and testimony by ACLU staff members, positive and critical publicity about the ACLU, materials on the Biennial Conference, Board of Directors and Foundation Board meeting minutes, and correspondence.

The Records of Meetings Subseries is divided into two sections: volumes which are indexed from 1920 through 1973 and unindexed meeting records. This subseries also includes records of cancelled meetings. The actual records of the Council's meetings include invitations to the meetings, attendance lists, correspondence, (including letters between the Executive Director of the Council on Foreign Relations and potential speakers), background material on the speakers and the topics, a digest of the meeting (in early meeting records, transcripts are available; some later meeting records include evaluations), and miscellaneous materials relating to the meeting. Recordings of a portion of the meetings from the early 1950s through the late 1980s are present in the Sound Recordings Series.
