Steward and Refectory Records, 1782-1869

The Steward and Refectory records relate to various expenses incurred by students while at Princeton. They are divided into two series. The first, refectory accounts, consists predominantly of lists of students and the amounts due from each for itemized expenses including room and board, tuition, library, servant wages, washing, damages and fuel. Other materials include bills, various accounts and reports, an inventory of furniture belonging to the kitchen in 1816, and bills, accounts and reports relating to the building of a new refectory in 1834-35. The second series consists of accounts, vouchers, correspondence, receipts and statements of expenses relating to the University Steward. The 1869 Steward's file consists of a list of local boarding houses and the owners, student residents and payments.

The Inspector's records consist of reports, receipts, vouchers, accounts and some correspondence concerning repairs to student rooms and other buildings. The receipts and vouchers are mainly from craftsman who conducted the repairs. Little information concerning individual students or their accounts can be found in these records. The position of Inspector was instituted in 1767 and apparently lasted until the mid-19th century at which time it merged into the Treasurer's Office.

Thomas Adams (1830-1900) was a civil engineer, topographer, and surveyor who traveled west with Isaac Stevens (1818-1862), the newly-appointed governor of the Washington Territory. From 1853 to 1859, Adams served the party as meteorologist, topographer, sketch artist, and eventually, as assistant to Lieutenant John Mullan (1830-1909), who was in charge of the surveying. This collection consists of four journals and one letter book documenting Adams's life from 1852 to 1859. In addition to detailed descriptions of Adams's experiences, the journals also contain expertly drawn sketches of landscapes and forts, Native Americans, and animals, as well as home-made dictionaries of the Flathead language.

"Volume II," as Adams titled it, contains approximately 86 pages of text and drawings and features many more extensive, anecdotal, and undated entries than the first journal. Beginning in June 1854, Adams, as a part of three parties of the expedition, left Cantonment Stevens. Adams accompanied Harry Pierson to Olympia on the Puget Sound; crossing the Missoula River, proceeding up the Snake River to Fort Walla Wallah, to the Cascades, down the Columbia River by steamboat to Vancouver, to Portland and Oregon City, and to Olympia. In Olympia, Adams waited for Governor Stevens' return, and during that time, traveled to Fort Steilacoom, Hudson Bay Trading Post, Vancouver, Portland, and the Coeur d'Alene Mission. He finally traveled to Fort Owen.
