He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950 and served in Korea, where he became a sergeant and received three Purple Hearts. He joined the French Foreign Legion in 1954 and served in the Algerian War. He was also in the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1958. His papers consist of diaries, notes, literary manuscripts, photographs, and art work.
