The business and financial correspondence (1967-1990) includes contracts, royalty statements, and check stubs for royalty payments, as well as incoming letters from agents and editors. Although Merrick came from a wealthy family, he seems to have lived to a large extent on royalties, as his correspondence demonstrates. There is an interesting turn in the correspondence when one of his agents Bernard Geis goes bankrupt and Merrick has to sue for back payment of royalties. There are some letters by Merrick, attached to the replies they received, because they are mostly undated. The last dated folder in the series (1989-1990) contains correspondence relating to Merrick's estate.

The personal correspondence is minimal but includes nine items from E. M. Forster, the British novelist, one of which deals at length with Merrick's earliest work, The Strumpet Wind. A Christmas card, undated, includes a picture of Forster in his study. There is also a note from composer Leonard Cohen who knew Merrick from having spent much time in the Greek islands.

Series 7: Finances, 1947-1991, contains records pertaining to the University's finances.

Subseries 7E: Fund Promotion, 1947-1989, concerns the solicitation of gifts for the University in the form of annual giving, capital campaigns, and the cultivation of particularly wealthy individuals. The Campaign for Princeton, the capital campaign championed by Bowen in the early to mid-1980s, dominates this subseries. The campaign is documented through publications, campaign committee work, the President's Program to promote the campaign (usually by visiting wealthy alumni and alumni groups around the country), and descriptions of the most pressing financial needs of the University.

This series documents Crespi's career after joining the USIA in 1954. This series includes USIA reports and related correspondence, notes, and clippings on surveys of foreign and domestic public opinion on a wide range of subjects, including the U.S. economy, trends in political thought, the future of American foreign policy, NATO, U.S. exhibitions on other countries, moral equivalence, phased retirement, and the effectiveness of USIA's own programs and surveys. Surveyed regions include Western and Eastern Europe, the Mideast, Asia, Latin America, and North America. Also included are departmental files of the USIA Office of Research (including service awards and performance evaluations of Crespi), WAPOR newsletters and correspondence, personal correspondence, photographs, biographical sketches of Crespi, drafts of published articles, and notes and related correspondence for various presentations and lectures he conducted over the course of his career. Material in this series that pre-dates 1954 primarily consists of USIA material that Crespi utilized in his research, as well as one report co-authored by Crespi for the office of the U.S. High Commissioner for Germany.

The files in Series 2: Carl W. Schafer Files, 1930-1982 (bulk 1972-1982) touch on a broad range of topics related to the financial operations of Princeton University, including investments, income and budget. The files document his service on the Resources Committee and the Priorities Committee of the Council of the Princeton University Community, which addressed issues including the divestiture of Princeton University from investments in South Africa. The files also include information on a proposed merger between the University and the Institute for Advanced Studies, as well as the development of Palmer Square.

Series 1: Princeton NROTC Records, 1948-1972 consists of publications, bulletins, course materials, and manuals pertaining to the Navy ROTC program at Princeton. Also included is a short written history of Navy activities at Princeton.

Princeton University's Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program was started in 1946 amidst a wave of enthusiasm for the ROTC that followed World War II. The collection consists of publications, bulletins, course materials, and manuals pertaining to the Navy ROTC program at Princeton.

Series 17: Ryan Home Office Files contains information on various campaigns, Democrat group involvement, fundraising, and local and other issues. information

The papers consist primarily of records maintained in William Fitts Ryan's congressional office in Washington, D.C. his district office in New York City, and campaign materials.

This collection consists of the papers received and generated by the staff of the Washington, D.C. Office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) during the 1950s and 1960s. The ACLU is a leading defender of civil liberties in the United States. Founded in 1920, it has been the recipient of sharp criticism for its willingness to defend unpopular causes and has participated in a majority of the landmark cases to come before the Supreme Court in the twentieth century. The Washington Office's primary responsibility is to monitor legislative issues. In the 1950s the office worked against abuses caused by McCarthyism, including loyalty oath requirements, powers of legislative investigating committees, and censorship of free speech and expression. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the office focused on civil rights issues and the defense of alternative means of self expression. The Washington Office was also deeply involved with defending the civil liberties of those associated with the federal government and its agencies.

Series 1, Irving Ferman Records, 1948-1959, documents Irving Ferman's tenure as director of the ACLU's Washington, D.C. Office. Also included in this series is the correspondence from 1951 of two staff employees, Mary Alice Baldinger and Faiga Levine, which deals primarily with administrative matters.

Topics covered include alumni appointments, work-study, study services and academic support.

The American Civil Liberties Union Records document the activities of the Union in protecting individual rights from 1920 through 1995. The sprint football program at Princeton (sometimes known as lightweight football) has operated since 1933. The collection consists of 196 videotapes (VHS format) of Sprint Football games and one video transfer of a 1947 varsity football game film.

Series 1: 2004 Accession of VHS Tapes, 1947, 1989-2003 consists of videotapes (VHS format) of Sprint Football games, mostly from 1989-2003, and one transfer of a varsity football game film from 1947. Each tape is labeled with the date of the game, the opponent, and in some instances the final score.

Consists of papers relating to post-World War II Greek history and politics, 1940s-1970s, collected by Norma Spector in her role as the public relations liaison of the Federation of Greek Maritime Unions (FGMU) in New York City.

Consists of a petition/letter in very small handwriting in Modern Greek of an anonymous political prisoner accompanied by a document in the type of a diary that was smuggled out of the Gyaros detention camp. It is an account of the sufferings of the prisoners from 1947 to 1950: it describes the daily activities in the camp, the living conditions, and more importantly, it names the prisoners being tortured and the guards carrying out the abuse. Also, present are typed transcriptions of letters in English smuggled out in this handwriting from the detention camps and prisons of Aē-Stratēs, Corfu, and Gyaros, dated in 1954 and 1955.

This microfilm contains materials published or distributed by Protestant organizations in Cuba. Many are published or printed by independent evangelical groups but distributed by various Protestant denominations or individual churches.

H. Freeman Matthews, Jr., son of H. Freeman Matthews, was a career Foreign Service officer, serving with the State Department from 1952 to 1991. The collection consists of materials documenting Matthews, Jr.'s service with the State Department, in particular, his time as Deputy Chief of Mission in Cairo from 1976 to 1980.

Series IV: Personal Materials includes a letter written by H. Freeman Matthews, Jr. to his parents while in the army in 1947 as well as candid photographs and photographs of friends and colleagues.

The American Ballet Theatre is an American ballet company founded by Oliver Smith and Lucia Chase in 1940. The collection consists of programs of performances of the Ballet Theatre dance company from its first performance in 1940 until 1979.

The Philosophy Manuscripts of Walter Kaufmann consists of manuscripts, galleys, and page proofs of many of the writings and translations of the American philosopher, educator, and author Walter Kaufmann (1921-1980).

Taos Pueblo lost thousands of acres of land as well as Taos Lake, a sacred Pueblo shrine, when Carson National Forest was created in 1906. After a sixty-four year fight, the government returned the land to the Pueblo. This collection brings together four discrete collections: the papers of Barbara Greene Kilberg, a White House Presidential Fellow at the time of the dispute; the papers of Corinne Locker, secretary to Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA) president Oliver LaFarge (1901-1963) and later AAIA Southwest Field Secretary; the papers of Rufus G. Poole, regional attorney for the AAIA in New Mexico, and the papers of William G. Schaab, an Albuquerque attorney who became involved in the fight in 1967.

This collection of manuscript materials documents a significant part of the history of an important land title dispute between the Taos Pueblo Indians of northern New Mexico and the federal government. in creating tie Carson National Forest in 1906, Pr esident Theodore Roosevelt carved away thousands of acres of Taos Pueblo land. This land, viewed as sacred by the Indians, surrounded and included Blue Lake: a vital religious shrine in Pueblo religion. Sixty-four years passed before the United States ret urned the land to the Indians.Instrumental in the fight for the return of Blue Lake and the surrounding wilderness was Corinne Locker (1927 - ). Locker became involved in the Blue Lake case while serving as secretary to Oliver La Farge (1901-1963) in Santa Fe, during La Farge's tenure as President of the Association on American Indian Affairs (AAIA). At La Farge's death, Locker became Southwest Field Secretary for the Association and stepped up her involvement in the Blue Lake fight. in doing so, she worked closely with the members of Taos Pueblo, most notably Paul Bernal. When, in 1966, disputes arose between the Pueblo and its attorneys, Locker filed a report with the AA1A that addressed possible conflict of interest existing among lawyers for the tribe who also served on AAIA decision-making bodies. The report resulted in Locker's dismissal from her AAIA position.Shortly thereafter, Locker formed the National Committee for the return of the Blue Lake Lands in conjunction with Rufus Q. Poole, an Albuquerque attorney, Paul Bernal, and others. As Coordinator of the organization, Locker operated as an effective liaison from the tribe to the non-Taos world. The National Committee lobbied for congressional and administration support of Blue Lake's return to the Indians; it also engineered a fundraising and publicity drive. Locker also worked closely with William C. Schaab (1927- ), special attorney to the Pueblo in the Blue Lake campaign. Much of the work of the committee involved attempts to mitigate the opposition of New Mexico Senator Clinton P. Anderson (1895-1975) and the United States Forest Service.The Nixon administration endorsed Blue Lake restoration legislation in the summer of 1970. Later that year, a bill returning 48,000 acres of land, including Blue Lake, was signed into law. Corinne Locker was honored for her efforts on behalf of Taos Pueblo at a subsequent ceremony in New Mexico.The Corinne Locker Papers, originals and copies alike, include the correspondence of Oliver La Farge in regards to AAIA involvement with the Blue Lake case; correspondence and documents relating to Locker's involvement as Southwest Field Secretary; materials in regards to Locker's report addressing possible conflict of interest among Pueblo attorneys; correspondence regarding the founding and functioning of the National Committee for the Restoration of the Blue Lake Lands; considerable correspondence r elating to proposed Blue Lake Legislation; materials related to the opposition of Senator Clinton P. Anderson, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Forest Service. There are also folders that pertain to miscellaneous activities of the AAIA in New Mexico and among the Pueblo Indians in particular. Locker's files were "working files," and their organization, for that purpose, has been largely been maintained. Readers will perhaps find it helpful to first read through the entire guide.
