Author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The American Revolution (1923), Charles H. McIlwaine (Princeton Class of 1894) was a professor of history and government at both Princeton (1905-1910) and Harvard University (1926-1946). His papers include notes, lectures, and other miscellaneous personal papers.

Charles Ruas is an American author, interviewer, editor, literary and art critic, and French translator, who served as the Director of the Drama and Literature Department for New York's Pacifica radio station WBAI-FM in the late 1970s and interviewed writers for radio broadcast and print, including Toni Morrison, Michel Foucault, Carlos Fuentes, Eudora Welty, Susan Sontag, Truman Capote, Buckminster Fuller, Andy Warhol, Mario Vargas Llosa, and others. Included are photographs and documents on Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, the St. Marks poetry project, and avant-garde artists and performers. The papers include transcripts and audiocassette tapes of Ruas's interviews with authors and artists, as well as typescripts and galleys of work by writers Ruas edited, including Marguerite Young, and some related photographs, notes, recordings, and correspondence. There are also some translations and other writings by Charles Ruas, as well as a collection of family photographs and papers documenting the history of his family in Tianjin, China, from the 1860s through the mid-20th century.

This group of materials consists of photographic albums and individual photographs, postcards, travel diaries, magazine articles, and some supplemental material documenting the history of the Ruas family in Tianjin, China, and illustrates the history of Tianjin primarily between the years of 1910 and 1946. Two of the photograph albums were put together by Charles Ruas' grandfather and father who were French engineers in the early Chinese ship-building industry at Dagu (Taku) and the water supply system of Tianjin. There is a group of 17 albums documenting the Taku Tug Lighter Company that were put together by another source. The Manchu General Marshal Yin Chang was the father of Charles Ruas's mother, so there are also some rare Chinese photographs of the imperial family.

American Charles William White wrote historical novels about artists and writers under the pen name of "Max White." Active as a historical fiction writer primarily in the 1930s through 1950s, White traveled in the same social circles as Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. The collection consists of manuscripts and correspondence of Charles William White ("Max White"), including correspondence with Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein.

This series contains manuscript materials for several of White's works of fiction and drama, including various manuscripts, copies, and drafts of his novels, short stories, and plays, occasionally in several versions.

Consists primarily of correspondence from family, friends, and colleagues of Millard during his academic and professional career. Additional correspondents include Princeton University Professor of American Art and Architecture Donald D. Egbert; Lawrence Morton, former music curator for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and artistic director of the Ojai Festival; and writer Allan Gurganus.

Consists mostly of correspondence along with some financial records, legal documents, such as deeds and land indentures, ephemera, and photographs dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries that relate to Chester W. Burton, a farmer from Chautauqua County, New York, and his family. Among other topics, the collection documents aspects of the Civil War and early settlement and gold mining in the west.

Though primarily correspondence, some documents, such as deeds and indentures, financial papers, such as receipts, invoices, and inventories, are interspersed throughout, especially in earlier correspondence. Also included are a few ephemeral materials as well as writings by various family members, including those of Chester W. Burton and Clarissa Harris, both of whom wrote articles for publication in local newspapers and journals.

Eugene O'Neill, the celebrated American playwright, was a director of the Provincetown Players and a founder of the Theatre Guild. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Strange Interlude (1928) and, posthumously, for Long Day's Journey Into Night (1956). The collection consists of fifteen manuscripts of O'Neill, most of which are first drafts of plays and include preliminary notes.

This microfilm is second in a series and consists of pamphlets, serials, and monographs either published by organizations in Uruguay or published by outside organizations but pertaining to the subject of religion in Uruguay.

This collection consists mainly of religious pamphlets published in Mexico.

The Julio Cortázar Papers consists of the manuscripts, notes, and notebooks of the Argentine novelist and short story writer Julio Cortázar (1914-1984). These papers primarily contain unpublished prose and poetry, as well as some manuscripts of published materials. Though Cortázar is not generally thought of as a poet, poetry is heavily represented in the collection, including a notebook of poems he wrote at the age of 12 (1927). There are also Spanish translations of some of Jean Cocteau's poetry, and lecture notes from two courses that Cortázar taught. Furthermore, the papers contain a small selection of quotations collected from the work of others, and notebooks that include an assortment of prose, poetry, and notes.

Consists of broadsides, programs, posters, periodicals, clippings, scrapbooks and scrapbook pages, a photograph, engravings, and a blueprint, spanning the years 1870-1963, with the majority of materials from 1944. A small amount of the broadsides and posters are in Spanish, along with a German periodical. One of the scrapbooks is associated with the Schoene family. Some of the periodicals and newspapers in this addition include issues of Illustrated Circus Life, Sarasota Herald-Tribune, and Sawdust and Spangles. Some of the circuses and performance groups represented in the publicity materials (broadsides, posters, programs, etc.) include Welch's National Circus and Theatre, Rose Kilian Great Southern Shows, Lewis Bros. 3 Ring Circus, and Spalding and Rogers' Circus.

Clark Gesner (1938-2002) was an American composer, lyricist, and writer most famous for his theatrical production You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. His papers document his entire career and include scripts and scores, as well as production notes, correspondence, publicity and reviews, and photographs.

This series includes all the materials donated to the Mudd Library by Melissa McGann. The work found here is mostly from Gesner's early years and collegiate years. The folders contain early plays, songs, and scripts.

This last series contains all of Gesner's oversize work from the collection. The oversize contents include sheet music, manuscripts, conductor's scores, posters, a scrapbook, and Gesner's diploma from Princeton University.

Photographs taken by Henry J. Powsner, Class of 1950, while he was a student at Princeton. In three envelopes labeled "Princetonianum" (campus views, including squirrel, and chapel interiors); "In the dorm"; and "About Princeton and band." The latter include dining hall interiors, a student suspended by pulley in a lecture hall, sunbathers, the football stadium, and band members at Richardson Auditorium, along with night exteriors of campus rowdiness.

The Student Photograph Albums Series of the Historical Photograph Collection (HPC) contains 180 photographic albums created by Princeton University students. These albums, along with the other photograph collections in the University Archives, help document the experiences of students, faculty, and staff at Princeton University. The albums date from 1851 to 1995, although the bulk date from the 1860s to the 1910s. New accessions are added regularly to the collection.

Consists of correspondence of the American architect and author Claude Fayette Bragdon, as well as related printed material.

Included as part of the final gothic design of Princeton's Graduate School was a 173-foot tower, a national memorial to former U.S. President Grover Cleveland who was also chairman of the trustees' graduate school committee. Clinton A. Decker traveled to Russia as part of the American Advisory Commission to Russia of Railway Experts (1917) and later became a member of the Inter-Allied Technical Board (1919-1922). The collection contains personal and business correspondence and photographs documenting Decker's travels in Russia, China, and Japan.

Clinton Wilder (Princeton Class of 1943) was an American theatrical producer. His collection consists of playbills he collected as well as typescripts and production materials of plays he produced.

This series includes letters sent by Máire to her husband Conor Cruise O'Brien, and to her parents during her time living in France and Spain and later with O'Brien in Ghana and in the United States. There are approximately 100 letters received from others including fellow writers and poets. Also includes correspondence from Seamus Heaney, who agreed to launch her autobiography in 2003. The Dr. Letitia Fairfield letters demonstrate the close relationship between the MacEntee family and Dr. Fairfield. She met Margaret MacEntee during a visit to Dublin in the early 1920s and following a return visit in 1928 the relationship between her and the family became closer. The correspondence between Dr. Fairfield and Seán MacEntee include discussions on international politics and offer insight into the realities of the effects of World War II on her life in London, and, from MacEntee's point of view, when Ireland had remained neutral. Also includes two songs sung in Irish, adaptations of a poem by Máire Mhac an tSaoi "Oíche Nollag" [Christmas Eve], singers unidentified, circa 1995.

Dr. Letitia Fairfield CBE (1885-1978) was a close family friend of the MacEntee's and the first female chief medical officer for London, England. Letters from Seán MacEntee during WWII present political status of Ireland during this time. He was Minister for Industry during the War.

Most articles concern Harry Maule Crookshank and his involvement in various expeditions, particularly in Egypt and Sudan, and obituaries. Other family members are represented to a lesser degree.

There are several well-known Princeton theatrical groups, but students and faculty have also organized many smaller groups over the decades, both short-term and long-lived. The collection consists of posters, programs, photographs, news clippings, and a very small amount of design and planning materials gathered about campus theatrical groups that are not already represented in dedicated archival collections.

The William K. Selden Collection on Eating Clubs contains research materials collected by Selden for the publication, Club Life at Princeton; An Historical Account of the Upper-Class Eating Clubs at Princeton University. Selden donated the material to the Archives in 1994.

The clippings in this collection were collected decades after Zelda Fitzgerald was hospitalized at Craig House. The clippings include F. Scott Fitzgerald's obituary, and several articles about either Zelda Fitzgerald or F. Scott Fitzgerald from the 60s and 70s, a couple of which were from the publication, Princeton Alumni Weekly.

Consists of the writings, correspondence, photographs, and personal papers of the Mexican novelist, journalist, and playwright Jorge Ibargüengoitia as well as writings about him by others and adaptations and translations of his work.

Ralph Barton Perry was a member of the Princeton University Class of 1896, a Harvard Philosophy Professor, and a Pulitzer-Prize winning writer producing works on philosophy, history, and politics in his lifetime. The Ralph Barton Perry Papers consist of correspondence, speeches, clippings, and other materials documenting Ralph Barton Perry's life as an alumnus of the Princeton Class of 1896.

Kenneth Sherman Clark was a member of the Princeton Class of 1905 and an active participant in Triangle Club during his time at Princeton. Consists of the personal papers and sheet music of Kenneth Sherman Clark spanning his time at Princeton as well as his later career.

Includes a copy of "Northern Ireland - The Mailed Fist: A Record of Army Police Brutality from Aug. 9-Nov. 9, 1971," published by the Campaign for Social Justice in Northern Ireland in collaboration with the Association for Legal Justice.

Consists of a photograph album, loose photographs, and clippings belonging to Robert J. Sommers (1881-1972), primarily documenting his work as a highway engineer in Alaska in the late 1920s, as well as some materials related to his personal life and career as a civil engineer and businessman involved in construction. Of note is a photograph album documenting a tour of Alaska made in 1928 by Sommers with Governor George A. Parks and Major Malcolm Elliott.

Consists of copies of letters by American author Herman Melville that were used by Willard Thorp in his selection of Melville's writings published as Representative Selections (1938), as well as other material about Melville.

Consists of photographs, manuscripts, diaries, and ephemera relating to Edward H. Phillips (1868-1944), his wife Marie Kempton Phillips (1881-1946), and their daughter Jean Sarah Phillips (1908–1985) that document ranch life in and around Montana around the turn of the 20th century as well as Ed Phillips' involvement in Wild West shows, including Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and his career as a Hollywood actor.

Consists of Ziolkowski's collection of printed materials documenting the popular and scholarly reception of Hermann Hesse and his work in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Some are annotated and accompanied by correspondence from those who sent materials to Ziolkowski to add to his collection. Included are reprints, journals, magazines, clippings, pamphlets, and ephemera, as well as copies of articles sent to him for review.

The Esar Levine Collection of Frank Harris consists of the writings, correspondence, and printed matter of, and relating to, Frank Harris (1855-1931) as collected by Esar Levine (1899-?), Harris's disciple, agent and friend. Harris, an Irish-born, naturalized American citizen, was a prolific writer and journalist/editor who is perhaps best known for his scandalous autobiography, My Life and Loves, which was censored in America and parts of Europe.

William F. Shellman was a member of the Dept. of Architecture faculty at Princeton University faculty forty years (1946-1986). He taught introductory courses in architecture and the visual arts and courses designed to heighten architectural students' visual sensitivity. His collection consists of his papers, primarily lectures and notes for his classes, but including matted illustrations and photographs of sample forms of architecture, cassette tapes of lectures, slides, architectural drawings, and watercolors.

The Correspondence series forms the heart of the collection. The bulk of the correspondence (Subseries 2A and 2D) is between Frances Hodgson Burnett (FHB) and her younger son, Vivian Burnett (VB), and spans the the late 1880s through her death in 1924. There are also letters between FHB and her older son, Lionel Burnett, prior to his death in 1890, as well as between FHB and her beloved sister, Edith Hodgson Fahnestock Jordan. Topics range from her busy social life and writing and play producing career that was divided between America and England, as well as descriptions of her many trips through Europe and other places around the globe. The eight subseries are divided among sender (FHB, VB, family and friends/other) and recipient (FHB, VB, family and friends/other, Constance Buel Burnett). Many letters include their original envelopes and therefore the respective postmark stamps, where legible, are used to date many of the letters by month, day and/or year. Some of the undated letters have a year penciled on them by hand and, on occasion, excerpts from letters enclosed within penciled brackets that appear to match some of the excerpts published in Vivian Burnett's 1927 book about his mother titled The Romantick Lady. Not all the penciled years may be accurate, however, and some have question marks and have subsequently been filed with the undated letters. An extensive number of letter excerpts published in Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina's 2004 biography, Frances Hodgson Burnett: The Unexpected Life of the Author of The Secret Garden, are labeled "Penny Deupree private collection" in the Notes section at the end of the book (Gerzina was granted access to Vivian Burnett's collection of FHB materials that was inherited by Penny Deupree, VB's granddaughter) and have been used to cross-reference some of the letter dates in this collection. There are also several penciled notes on slips of paper that summarize certain letters' contents and they have been retained with the original letters. Preservation photocopies were made for some of the letters in Subseries 2D (Vivian Burnett to FHB) and they are included with the originals.

The Collection on William F. McCombs contains materials on and by William F. McCombs, a lawyer who was actively involved in Woodrow Wilson's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns. McCombs' secretary, Maurice F. Lyons, provided transcripts of correspondence and notes authored by McCombs to Arthur S. Link, as part of Link's work on The Papers of Woodrow Wilson. Correspondence between Lyons and Link concerning the typescripts is also located in this collection, as well as a set of bound newspaper clippings on Wilson's campaigns and administrations created by McComb's sister.

The Committee on Safety and Insurance was an administrative organization that dealt with occupational safety and insurance issues throughout University facilities and departments. The records consist of Commitee minutes, accident reports, insurance policies, general subject files, and correspondence.

The Cyrus Fogg Brackett Lectureship in Applied Engineering and Technology was established in memory of Professor Brackett in 1921 and continued until 1953. The collection contains many of the lectures–both in manuscript and published form–and correspondence with lecturers and potential lecturers. The collection also includes some general materials relating to the lectureship, such as citations, registries, histories, schedules, and short summaries of Professor Brackett's life and accomplishments.

The Department of Oriental Studies was formed at Princeton University in the spring of 1927 as the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature. It offered an interdisciplinary curriculum centered on the study of the Arabic, Turkish, and Persian languages and the regions in which they were spoken until 1969, when it was reorganized into the separate Departments of Near Eastern Studies and East Asian Studies. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, printed materials, course syllabi, and other materials which document the activities of the department and it's faculty inside and outside of the classroom.

Corliss Lamont was a humanist philosopher and socialist who served as a director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) from 1932 to 1954. The Corliss Lamont Papers document the breadth of Lamont's career as a humanist, civil libertarian, and philanthropist.

Consists of four small groups of correspondence between Wesley Halliburton and others after the death of his famous son Richard in 1939. Richard Halliburton was a celebrated adventurer and author known, among other things, for having swum the length of the Panama Canal.

The Thorps were also associates of Eliot, and they were aware of the close relationship between he and Hale.

Consists mostly of letters from British-American poet T.S. Eliot to Emily Hale (1891-1969), a teacher, actress, and close friend of Eliot's. Also included are copies of typescripts by Eliot, photographs, ephemera, and a brief narrative of the relationship between the two penned by Hale.

Luther P. Eisenhart taught mathematics at Princeton and was one of the original preceptors appointed in 1905 by Princeton University president Woodrow Wilson. The Luther P. Eisenhart Collection on Woodrow Wilson contains correspondence between Eisenhart and Woodrow Wilson, Eisenhart and others about Woodrow Wilson, letters received by Churchill Eisenhart, and miscellaneous Wilson-related ephemera.

Correspondence between Helen Gibbons and her mother; between Helen and Herbert Gibbons; as well as letters from Margaret Deland, General Pershing, and Jean Jules Jusserand; from other friends; and letters from American soldiers.

Robert Vossler Keeley ('51) was a U.S. Foreign Service member and writer who served in a number of posts. The Robert V. Keeley Papers consist of reports, correspondence, writings, journals, and photographs from the breadth of Keeley's career, including his Foreign Service postings in Uganda, Cambodia, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and Greece, as well as correspondence and other materials created and kept by Robert Keeley's wife, Louise Keeley.

Correspondence of James Creese, Jr., including letters to his parents from graduate school; letters marking his election as president of the Stevens and Drexel Institutes of Technology; and letters concerning his days at Princeton and reunion events.

Consists of a small group of papers of J. Paul Baldeagle (Princeton University Class of 1923), a South Dakota-born Sioux, who was a schoolteacher for 35 years at William MacFarland High School in Bordentown, New Jersey, as well as a Native American rights activist.

Consists of ten photographs and photographic postcards depicting Baldeagle (including his Princeton senior portrait), members of his family and community, and students he coached. Includes photographs taken in New Jersey and South Dakota, and many of the photographs have detailed annotations.

Consists of incoming correspondence. There are also handwritten poems by Korphēs, a typescript titled "Karaiskou 54. Dōdeka vinietes apo hena erēmo spiti", a short biographical note, and a printed title page of the book Hē hōraia Sachrazat inscribed by the author K. Trikoglidēs to Lapathiōtes dated 1921, and photocopies of newspaper clippings.

Ira Owen Wade (Princeton Class of 1924) was a professor of French in Princeton's Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. His collection consists of typescript of his writings on Voltaire, professional correspondence, research notes, and some student work.

The Kreuger & Toll Company, founded by Ivar Kreuger, was the holding company of an international match trust based in Sweden whose securities were popular during the 1920s. The company was organized as a giant pyramid scheme and went bankrupt in 1932. The Kreuger & Toll Company Records document the company's bankruptcy and include court and legal documents and accountants' reports.

Consists of papers of Norman C. Pierce, an American Mormon author, including personal correspondence, financial papers, a photograph album of a trip to Germany in 1927, family photographs, clippings, travel memorabilia and notes, articles (by others), and printed matter relating to Mormonism in Utah.

This file group consists of correspondence from various colleagues, publishers, family, and friends. Frequent and notable names found throughout the correspondence include Octavio Paz, Juan Vicente Melo, Carlos Fuentes, José Miguel Oviedo, Sergio Galindo, Félix Grande, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Homero Aridjis, Carlos Monsivaís, Rosario Castellanos, José Bianco, Vicente Rojo, Hugo J. Verani (University of California, Davis), Saúl Sosnowski (University of Maryland at College Park), Juan Armando Epple (University of Oregon), Bruno Arcudi (State University of New York at Buffalo), Manuel Andújar (Alianza Editorial), Mario Muchnik (Muchnik Editores and Ariel/Seix Barral Editoriales), Fernando Vidal Buzzi (Editorial Sudamericana), and many others. Given the disorganized state of the material upon receipt in the repository, the correspondence has been arranged chronologically (by decades), and only the correspondence that arrived in groupings or was easily identified has been separated, including that of Octavio Paz, Juan Vicente Melo, Carlos Fuentes, José Miguel Oviedo, Sergio Galindo, Bruno Arcudi, and the family correspondence, chiefly Pacheco´s wife, daughters, and mother.

Consists of the papers (circa 1940s-2010s) of Mexican poet, essayist, novelist and short story writer, José Emilio Pacheco. Materials include notebooks, diaries and journals, writings, correspondence, printed materials, and other items.

The papers of Joseph A. Robinson, Princeton Class of 1931, are comprised almost entirely of Robinson's letters to his family during the years 1941-1952, when Robinson worked in the Office of War Information and the Foreign Service. The collection includes some drafts and copies of his work, radio scripts and newspaper clippings, as well as photographs, currency, invitations and postcards. Some of the later letters cover portions of his term in the Foreign Service, though with significant gaps. The most fully documented year is 1946. Robinson was involved in the establishment of informational and cultural affairs agencies in Saigon and Warsaw, and describes the internal politics and external challenges of creating an American news presence overseas.
