The Records of the Association on American Indian Affairs document the corporate life of an influential and resilient player in the history of twentieth-century Native American advocacy. From its formation by non-Indians in New York in 1922 to its re-establishment in South Dakota in 1995 under a wholly Indian administration, the AAIA has defended the rights and promoted the welfare of Native Americans and, in this process, has shaped the views of their fellow citizens. The AAIA has waged innumerable battles over the years, touching on the material and spiritual well-being of Indians in every state of the Union: from the right of Native Americans to control their resources to their right to worship freely; from their right to federal trusteeship to their right to self-determination. The evolving nature of this struggle, in terms of conception and execution; the environment in which it was waged, both within and without the AAIA; the parade of men and women who figured in it; and the relationships among them can all be found in the abundant and insightful records which constitute these Records. The correspondence, minutes, reports, articles, clippings, and other documents in the collection, augmented by photographic and audiovisual material, represent a window not only on the AAIA but on the entities and personalities with which it interacted. Series 2: Incoming Correspondence, 1026-2937

This series includes some 10,000 letters, telegrams, postcards and other communications received by Russell and his immediate associates over the years 1897 to 1956. The letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent, with corporate entries and cross reference cards as described for the outgoing correspondence. Russell's colleagues often sought his opinion of their work, and some 175 manuscripts are interspersed with the incoming letters. Folders of correspondence which contain one or more manuscripts are labeled on the right side "Manuscript enclosed with correspondence". At the same time, there is a 3 x 5 yellow card for each manuscript which lists its author, title, length, date, and location. The yellow cards are arranged alphabetically by author in a file stored in the manuscripts catalogue.

Subseries 2B: Microfilm, 1162-2223

The Microfilm Subseries contains correspondence, documents, newspapers, and writings of Wilson and others which had been microfilmed by various repositories and purchased by the editorial staff for reference and inclusion in the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Project. Repositories from which significant amounts of reels were purchased include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the London Public Records Office, Princeton University, and Yale University. This subseries is closely related to Subseries 1C: Miscellaneous Photocopies, in that similar types of materials are included in both subseries, although there is little or no overlapping content.

Series 2: Photographs and Audio-Visual Materials, 1162-2223

The Photographs and Audio-Visual Series consists of photographs, microfilm, and sound recordings gathered by the editorial staff of the Papers of Woodrow Wilson. The photographs provide a visual complement to the papers gathered in this collection, and many were published throughout the 69 volumes of Wilson papers. The microfilm consists of reels ordered from repositories throughout the country and around the world, containing correspondence to and from Wilson, as well as reports from his administration, diaries, newspapers, and papers of individuals related to Wilson. The audio contains recordings of radio programs and seminars on the topic of Wilson, as well as some of his speeches.

The section Political Movements and Parties (1968-2001) contains serials, monographs, small flyers, and pamphlets published by many of Chile's various political organizations. The publications in this section pertain not to specific political campaigns, but to other political activities and the year-to-year workings of the organizations.This section of this microfilm can seem particularly complicated, simply because of the ephemeral nature of political alliances in Latin America. Movements and parties may change their name, their logo, or their platforms repeatedly. The multi-party political system forces the continual re-negotiation of alliances among parties, and these alliances may be disbanded, reformed, or adjusted from year to year.An effort has been made throughout the microfilm to note relationships among various groups (e.g., Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia (see also Partido por la Democracia, Partido Radical Socialdemócrata, Partido Socialista de Chile)).

The External Views on Princeton series documents the opinions and views of non-Princetonians about Princeton University. Princeton has—almost since its founding—been a favorite subject of writers, artists, and filmmakers. Though it is often portrayed with admiration, it is also sometimes the subject of criticism or parody. This series also includes rankings of universities that include Princeton, things named for Princeton, and lists of Princetonians awarded non-Princeton prizes and awards. A large section of this series consists of newspaper and magazine articles about Princeton (the bulk of which date to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries). Because of the number of these that are oversize, an oversize run is included as part of the series. The majority of the Writings series is composed of materials related to articles and books written by Hirschman, including offprints and drafts of articles, correspondence, reviews, research materials, and notes. The books include Exit, Voice and Loyalty, The Passions and the Interests, and Shifting Involvements. The subject of his writings is predominantly economic development in Latin America and throughout the world, and also includes economic policies, industrialization, inflation, and trade. The series also contains speech materials from Hirschman's tenure as economist for the Federal Reserve Board, papers and correspondence sent to Hirschman by other scholars to solicit his review and some of his reviews of their work, and papers written by Hirschman during his education.

The University Librarian series contains the records of the various individuals who have held the position and provide an overview of the Library's historical development from the vantage point of one of the few roles that have remained relatively static throughout the Library's entire existence. As the chief administrator of the Library, the University Librarian is involved to some extent in nearly every aspect of the institution's planning and evolution. This is especially true in the earlier years of the Library when activities later undertaken by separate departments were somewhat more centralized around the Librarian. Series 5: Samuel Finley Records, 1749-1996

As president of the College of New Jersey, Samuel Finley is known for increasing enrollment and for his popularity as a teacher. Finley was born in 1715 in Armagh County, Ireland. On immigrating to America in 1734, he immediately began to educate himself with the goal of becoming a minister and was ordained in 1740 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. During his seventeen years as pastor of the church of Nottingham, Maryland, he oversaw its educational academy. Early in his career, Finley preached in a contentious manner, very much in keeping with the spirited religious revivals of the Great Awakening, but he later moderated his tone. He received an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow before becoming the fifth president of the College of New Jersey in June 1761, serving in this role until his death in July 1766.

Series 10: John Maclean, Jr. Records, 1752-1997

John Maclean, Jr. was the eldest of six children of John Maclean, Sr. and Phoebe Bainbridge. His father was born in Glasgow, studied for the medical profession, and became a surgeon. At 24, the elder Maclean immigrated to the United States for political reasons. He was invited to take the vacant chair of natural philosophy, which included chemistry, at the College of New Jersey, becoming the institution's first professor of chemistry. He married in 1797, and John was born on March 3, 1800. Entering the College of New Jersey as a sophomore, he graduated in 1816 as the youngest in his class. He taught for a few months in Lawrenceville, New Jersey before earning a divinity degree from the Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1818 he was appointed as a tutor of Greek at the College of New Jersey, beginning a long, varied, and devoted career at his alma mater. Series 3: Student-generated publications are those documents composed by enrolled undergraduate or graduate students. Several 19th century student publications are present, including some of the earliest known student newspapers, such as The Balance (1802) which provides an account of a Nassau Hall fire, and The Chameleon, written by the Class of 1835. The series also includes special editions and joke issues of the Daily Princetonian, such as The Gaily Printsanything (circa 1920s). In addition, the years 1969 and 1996 saw particular literary flourishing, with the inception of several student-generated magazines consisting of a few issues before the magazines' discontinuation. In a few cases, the records of the creating organization are included with copies of the publications.

Griffin was a prolific correspondent who often created several drafts of his letters and illustrated their salutations. Griffin filed correspondence in several different alphabetical runs. Some correspondence was also unfiled. The bulk of the letters were received by Griffin, but drafts or copies of his own letters are also present.

Series 3: Artwork, 1937-2010

Artwork includes primarily drawings and sketches. The series also contains some pastels and paintings, printing and printing plates, as well as childhood artwork, pieces from Griffin's studies at Yale, and book designs. The bulk of the drawings in this series are undated and unsigned, but many of the sketches appear to date from the 1990s and 2000s. Human figures are the most common theme. A great number of drawings were labeled "erotic" by Griffin and were often stored, as was much of his correspondence and artwork, in interoffice envelopes. Erotic drawings of men appear throughout the series, not only in the folders so labeled.

After his exile from Spain following the Spanish Civil War, Candela never continued his formal study of architecture. Subseries 1A: Complete and Final Minutes of Faculty Meetings, 1781-2010

The Complete and Final Minutes subseries groups together the faculty minutes in their bound, final form. The eighteenth and nineteenth century minutes consist mostly of entries written carefully in minutes books; the minutes from the twentieth century to the present also include printed reports and documents from various committees. Minutes from the later half of the twentieth century to the present include an agenda for the next meeting. Beginning in 1968 and ending in 1984, abstracts (or summaries) were created in the interest of transparency. These abstracts form subseries 1B and, from June 1970 to June 1984, are not restricted. Since 1984, the clerk of the faculty no longer wrote up an abstract in addition to minutes, and simply wrote abstracts as if they were the actual minutes. For this reason, the minutes of the faculty from 1984 to the present are not restricted. Clerks of the faculty changed frequently, and they each put their own stamp on the format and content of the minutes.

Henry R. Labouisse (1904-1987) was a distinguished American diplomat and international public servant. He served as director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) from 1954 to 1958 and as executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) from 1965 to 1979. He also served as a United States government official working on the formation and implementation of foreign economic policies during World War II and the 1960s. Labouisse's papers document his career with the United Nations and with the State Department and include correspondence, speeches and publications, as well as biographical and genealogical material.

Eddy (1896-1962), educator, diplomat, minister to Saudi Arabia, intelligence agent, and college president, focus on his presidency of Hobart College (1936-1941), his work in U.S. - Middle East policy, and his family life in the period from 1917-1962. The holdings of his personal and family correspondence is extensive. The collection contains all correspondence from his term as president of Hobart College, 1936-1941. Many military documents are included, especially in the years 1941-1946 (the planning of the North African landings, the FDR/Ibn Saud meeting, the Treaty of the Yemen). There are many geneological papers and letters from Eddy's relatives concerning American missionary work in the Middle East. There are numerous publications concerning 18th C. English literature, religious and civic duties, U.S. Foreign policy re Israel and the Arabs, and sociological accounts of the Middle East. A portion of the papers relate to research conducted by Professor Gerald Breese for his book Princeton University Land, 1752-1984 (1986).

Series 3: Maps and Surveys, 1849-1981 contains originals and copies of maps and surveys of Princeton University land that were intended to represent the campus and other University lands as they existed. This is in contrast to maps, plans and surveys in the records of the Office of Physical Planning, which were created as part of the planning and development process and may or may not represent what actually existed. In addition to professionally produced and published maps, this series also contains several student surveys of portions of university land from the early 20th century, possibly created as part of an academic course.

The Washington, D.C. Regional Office records document the ACLU's involvement with national legislation and government actions. The records include testimony of ACLU staff, correspondence lobbying legislators, publications and correspondence to mobilize public opinion, and the ACLU's research materials, including documents released by the government through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. The office addressed any legislation or government practices which involved civil liberties concerns. Areas of particular concern include government abuse of power, especially denial of due process in the name of national security, the legality of intelligence gathering and covert operations of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), governmental secrecy and the rights of citizens to information, and immigration and international travel to and from the United States.

Charles Ruas is an American author, interviewer, editor, literary and art critic, and French translator, who served as the Director of the Drama and Literature Department for New York's Pacifica radio station WBAI-FM in the late 1970s and interviewed writers for radio broadcast and print, including Toni Morrison, Michel Foucault, Carlos Fuentes, Eudora Welty, Susan Sontag, Truman Capote, Buckminster Fuller, Andy Warhol, Mario Vargas Llosa, and others. Included are photographs and documents on Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, the St. Marks poetry project, and avant-garde artists and performers. The papers include transcripts and audiocassette tapes of Ruas's interviews with authors and artists, as well as typescripts and galleys of work by writers Ruas edited, including Marguerite Young, and some related photographs, notes, recordings, and correspondence. This group of materials consists of photographic albums and individual photographs, postcards, travel diaries, magazine articles, and some supplemental material documenting the history of the Ruas family in Tianjin, China, and illustrates the history of Tianjin primarily between the years of 1910 and 1946. Two of the photograph albums were put together by Charles Ruas' grandfather and father who were French engineers in the early Chinese ship-building industry at Dagu (Taku) and the water supply system of Tianjin. There is a group of 17 albums documenting the Taku Tug Lighter Company that were put together by another source. The Manchu General Marshal Yin Chang was the father of Charles Ruas's mother, so there are also some rare Chinese photographs of the imperial family.

Photographs, 1924-2019

Consists of photographic prints, contact sheets, and negatives, primarily in black-and-white, including shots taken in the WBAI studio in New York City, as well as promotional photographs and portraits gifted to Ruas by authors and artists with whom he worked. Most of the photographs taken in the WBAI studio are by Joan Schwartz, including images of various authors reading from Marguerite Young's Miss MacIntosh, My Darling, as well as a number of photographs of poets reading at a New Year's Eve poetry reading at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery in 1975. In addition to containing photographs of many of the writers and artists reflected elsewhere throughout this collection, musicians and composers like Patti Smith, Lou Reed, and Phillip Glass are also represented in this group of photographs. Also of note is a group of portraits and photographs of performances by Babette Mangolte. While most photographic materials in the collection are described here, some, which were originally kept with manuscript materials and ephemera, are described with the general Author and Artist Files.

He was a chief engineer of the Long Island Railroad, 1863; a division chief of the Panama Railroad, 1864-1865; a division chief of the Union Pacific Railroad, 1867-1869; and a division chief of the Northern Pacific Railroad, 1870-1874. He died in Oakland, California, on November 8, 1885. The collection consists primarily of material relating to Morris's role in the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Northern Pacific Railroad.
