The Records of the Association on American Indian Affairs document the corporate life of an influential and resilient player in the history of twentieth-century Native American advocacy. From its formation by non-Indians in New York in 1922 to its re-establishment in South Dakota in 1995 under a wholly Indian administration, the AAIA has defended the rights and promoted the welfare of Native Americans and, in this process, has shaped the views of their fellow citizens. The AAIA has waged innumerable battles over the years, touching on the material and spiritual well-being of Indians in every state of the Union: from the right of Native Americans to control their resources to their right to worship freely; from their right to federal trusteeship to their right to self-determination. The evolving nature of this struggle, in terms of conception and execution; the environment in which it was waged, both within and without the AAIA; the parade of men and women who figured in it; and the relationships among them can all be found in the abundant and insightful records which constitute these Records. The correspondence, minutes, reports, articles, clippings, and other documents in the collection, augmented by photographic and audiovisual material, represent a window not only on the AAIA but on the entities and personalities with which it interacted. While its vision has co-existed with others, and while it has been far from alone in its contribution to Indian life, no consideration of twentieth-century Native American affairs can disregard its arduous and, for the most part, fruitful work.

This collection contains legislation files, campaign materials, correspondence, speech texts, schedules and invitations, travel files, patronage files, subject files, photographs, and audiovisual materials documenting McGovern's activities in the House of Representatives and in the U.S. Senate, as well as his time as Director of Food for Peace.

Charles W. Yost (1907-1981) led a varied career as a diplomat, United Nations representative, writer, and scholar. He was a member of the foreign service intermittently between 1930 and 1971, after which time he devoted himself full-time to writing and teaching. Yost's papers document his professional life in the Foreign Service, as well as his time in academia, and include his correspondence, writings, and photographs.

Series 4, General, 1944-2012

Series 4, General, 1944-2012 reflects Becker's personal activities. Becker used his financial and analytical skills throughout his career. He created a small file of his position papers, included are documents for the Investment Bankers Association of America, John J. Gilhooley during his bid for New York City Comptroller in 1961, and the Critical Issues Council directed by Milton Eisenhower. Some of these position papers can be found elsewhere in the series, for example the paper on the position of comptroller is found in the portfolio assembled by Becker and within the John Gilhooley correspondence. Other writings in this series include the foreign press reviews from Becker's Army service in the mid-1950s, and a manuscript entitled "Selling Municipal Bonds."

The Microfilm Subseries contains correspondence, documents, newspapers, and writings of Wilson and others which had been microfilmed by various repositories and purchased by the editorial staff for reference and inclusion in the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Project. Repositories from which significant amounts of reels were purchased include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the London Public Records Office, Princeton University, and Yale University. This subseries is closely related to Subseries 1C: Miscellaneous Photocopies, in that similar types of materials are included in both subseries, although there is little or no overlapping content.

The papers of William A. Eddy (1896-1962), educator, diplomat, minister to Saudi Arabia, intelligence agent, and college president, focus on his presidency of Hobart College (1936-1941), his work in U.S. - Middle East policy, and his family life in the period from 1917-1962. The holdings of his personal and family correspondence is extensive. The collection contains all correspondence from his term as president of Hobart College, 1936-1941. Many military documents are included, especially in the years 1941-1946 (the planning of the North African landings, the FDR/Ibn Saud meeting, the Treaty of the Yemen). There are many geneological papers and letters from Eddy's relatives concerning American missionary work in the Middle East. There are numerous publications concerning 18th C. English literature, religious and civic duties, U.S. Foreign policy re Israel and the Arabs, and sociological accounts of the Middle East. The collection is composed of personal/professional correspondence, documents, diaries and notebooks, addresses, publications, manuscripts of Eddy's books and articles (including unpublished MSs), scrapbooks, photographs, negatives, and memorabilia.

Series 5, Dillard University and Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts, 2005-2016

This series consists of records--created primarily by Karen Jezierny, Director of Public Affairs—in both paper and digital formats pertaining to Dillard University Relief Efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Jezierny chiefly led Princeton's role in the partnership with Dillard University, a historically black college or university (HBCU) in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brown University, led at the time by former Princeton professor and dean Ruth Simmons, was initially involved in the relief effort as well. These records provide initial information as the effort began as well as ongoing efforts including speeches and press releases containing updates throughout the process. Also included are the visit agenda and itinerary for Marvalene Hughes, President of Dillard University, to Princeton's campus. All of these records were used by Karen Jezierny as she supported and led the initiative.

The Sikhs of Princeton, a student organization established at Princeton University in the fall of 2009, exists to create a space on the University's campus that provides resources for Sikh students to express their faith as well as to spread awareness of Sikhism to the Princeton community. The Sikhs of Princeton Records consist of outreach materials as well as photographs and videos of events sponsored by Sikhs of Princeton. The collection also contains some records related to the student group Princeton Bhangra, which practices and performs bhangra, a South Asian folk dance.

The material in this collection pertains not only to an individual, Richard Schechner, but also to TDR, The Drama Review, a scholarly journal concerned with the broad range of performance in society and in the arts. Schechner, a renowned scholar, director, writer, and educator, edited The Drama Review from 1962-1969 and again from 1986 to the present date. Particularly in the 1960s, and again in the 1990s, both Schechner and TDR challenged traditional, prevailing ideas about theater-what it is, how it should be presented, and the ritual and ideals behind it. Schechner argued for thinking of "performance" as an all-encompassing genre with "theater" as one of its sub-categories. He is widely recognized as the founder of "performance studies" as an academic discipline. In the process of working out what performance studies is, Schechner and his colleagues at New York University created new ideas and new ways of thinking that still affect today's world of performance, theater, dance, and the social sciences. As "the journal of performance studies," TDR did much to shape the new discipline.

The collection documents the career of Richard Rush (Princeton Class of 1797) as lawyer, statesman, and diplomat, emphasizing diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Great Britain while he was minister to Great Britain (1817-1825) and between the United States and France when he was minister to France (1847-1849), as well as his successful efforts (1836-1838) in securing the Smithsonian bequest, which was used to establish the Smithsonian Institution. The papers of Richard Rush constitute the larger part of the collection; letters of his father, Benjamin Rush, M.D. (Princeton Class of 1760), and papers of his son, Benjamin Rush (Princeton Class of 1829, constitute the other major groups of papers in this family archive.

David Kellogg Lewis (1941-2001) was an American philosopher who taught at Princeton University and the University of California, Los Angeles and contributed to metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, decision theory, epistemology, meta-ethics, and aesthetics. This series includes David Lewis's extensive correspondence with fellow philosophers and scholars spanning over four decades. Frequent correspondents include philosophers such as David M. Armstrong, J. J. C. Smart, Frank Jackson, W. V. Quine, D. H. Mellor, M. J. Cresswell, Allen Hazen, John Bigelow, and others. Lewis's letters and the responses he received are often lengthy, as he maintained ongoing conversations regarding many philosophical topics with his colleagues through regular correspondence. Files include correspondence David Lewis filed and kept himself, as well as copies and originals of letters he sent to others that were later retrieved from his correspondents by Stephanie R. Lewis. Incoming and outgoing correspondence are filed together in keeping with the organization of the materials as they arrived at the library. Subseries 3A: Publishing and Permissions, 1971-2010

This subseries includes materials related to publishing and permissions, including printed materials, revised typescripts for later reissues of Fagles's translations, and correspondence reflecting Fagles's relationships with his publisher, literary agent, and collaborators. Correspondence with Bernard Knox and Georges Borchardt is accompanied by a significant group of permissions inquiries and replies pertaining to the reuse of Fagles's work in publications and performances by others. A group of materials related to Fagles's revisions of his translations from the Greek for the Penguin Classics series in the early 2000s is also present. Researchers should note that Fagles kept all materials regarding the initial publication of each of his translations along with his complete files on those works; therefore, those searching for publication files regarding specific works should consult the corresponding subseries in Series 1.

Series 3: Professional Files, 1971-2010

This series contains files from Robert Fagles's home office regarding publishing and permissions for republication and quotation of his translations, as well as regarding his professional awards and service in various academic organizations. Materials document his professional relationships with his publishers at Viking Penguin, with his literary agent Georges Borchardt, and with his long-term collaborator Bernard Knox, as well as the use of his translations in works by others and later revisions of works for Penguin Classics. Fagles's many honors and awards are also represented by a group of topical correspondence, brochures, itineraries, speech drafts, and printed materials, as is his participation in various selection committees and as a speaker at public events. Although Fagles's teaching and course files are not contained in the collection, this series does include a few files that hold copies of Fagles's lectures for seminars and conferences on the classics in Princeton University's Department of Comparative Literature.

Series 1: Writings By and About Severo Sarduy, 1960-2013

This series comprises a group of Severo Sarduy's writings from the 1960s through the early 1990s, including his edited typescripts and copies of various essays, poems and translations, interviews, and writings by others about him. Materials are largely grouped by topic, and original folder titles were maintained. A significant portion of these materials consist of Sarduy's writings about painting and art. Many also date to Sarduy's later years, during the period when he was an editor for Éditions Gallimard, where he published and promoted the work of many other Spanish and Latin American authors.
