The Records of the Association on American Indian Affairs document the corporate life of an influential and resilient player in the history of twentieth-century Native American advocacy. From its formation by non-Indians in New York in 1922 to its re-establishment in South Dakota in 1995 under a wholly Indian administration, the AAIA has defended the rights and promoted the welfare of Native Americans and, in this process, has shaped the views of their fellow citizens. The AAIA has waged innumerable battles over the years, touching on the material and spiritual well-being of Indians in every state of the Union: from the right of Native Americans to control their resources to their right to worship freely; from their right to federal trusteeship to their right to self-determination. The evolving nature of this struggle, in terms of conception and execution; the environment in which it was waged, both within and without the AAIA; the parade of men and women who figured in it; and the relationships among them can all be found in the abundant and insightful records which constitute these Records. The correspondence, minutes, reports, articles, clippings, and other documents in the collection, augmented by photographic and audiovisual material, represent a window not only on the AAIA but on the entities and personalities with which it interacted. While its vision has co-existed with others, and while it has been far from alone in its contribution to Indian life, no consideration of twentieth-century Native American affairs can disregard its arduous and, for the most part, fruitful work.

Series 2: Incoming Correspondence, 1026-2937

This series includes some 10,000 letters, telegrams, postcards and other communications received by Russell and his immediate associates over the years 1897 to 1956. The letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent, with corporate entries and cross reference cards as described for the outgoing correspondence. Russell's colleagues often sought his opinion of their work, and some 175 manuscripts are interspersed with the incoming letters. Folders of correspondence which contain one or more manuscripts are labeled on the right side "Manuscript enclosed with correspondence". At the same time, there is a 3 x 5 yellow card for each manuscript which lists its author, title, length, date, and location. The yellow cards are arranged alphabetically by author in a file stored in the manuscripts catalogue.

The Russell papers contain drafts and carbon copies of some 13,000 letters which Russell wrote over the years 1908 - 1950 (approx.). These letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent. Correspondents include not only individuals, but businesses, scientific societies, schools and divisions of Princeton University. Letters to individuals filed under corporate entries may be located by consulting the file of white cards in the manuscripts catalogue. For example, looking in the cross-reference file under the name of R.A. Gregory, one finds a card which reads as follows:

The Microfilm Subseries contains correspondence, documents, newspapers, and writings of Wilson and others which had been microfilmed by various repositories and purchased by the editorial staff for reference and inclusion in the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Project. Repositories from which significant amounts of reels were purchased include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the London Public Records Office, Princeton University, and Yale University. This subseries is closely related to Subseries 1C: Miscellaneous Photocopies, in that similar types of materials are included in both subseries, although there is little or no overlapping content.

Series 2: Photographs and Audio-Visual Materials, 1162-2223

The Photographs and Audio-Visual Series consists of photographs, microfilm, and sound recordings gathered by the editorial staff of the Papers of Woodrow Wilson. The photographs provide a visual complement to the papers gathered in this collection, and many were published throughout the 69 volumes of Wilson papers. The microfilm consists of reels ordered from repositories throughout the country and around the world, containing correspondence to and from Wilson, as well as reports from his administration, diaries, newspapers, and papers of individuals related to Wilson. The audio contains recordings of radio programs and seminars on the topic of Wilson, as well as some of his speeches.

The Development and Resources Corporation (D&R), founded and directed by David E. Lilienthal, operated from 1955 to 1979 and was based in New York City. D&R provided regional economic development services to governments throughout the world, often with a focus on the development of water resources and the construction of dams. Its main project was the development of the Khuzestan region of Iran. D&R's records document its development projects and business operations and include correspondence, contracts, data and maps, proposals and reports, and collected materials about each country.

Subseries 3A: Administrative Files, 1347-1980

The Administrative Files subseries documents D's management of the development projects in Iran. The majority of the files are composed of correspondence, and also include financial and personnel records, reference materials on Iran, and records pertaining to D's interaction with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and with the Khuzestan Water and Power Authority (KWPA). The subseries also includes the previous finding aid for the Khuzestan Development Program records, written by Thomas Mead of D, which contains descriptions of the content of most folders and information about D's history in Iran. Please note, however, that the records have been re-organized since this finding aid was written.

Series 1: Administrative, 1936-1980

The Administrative Files series contains records pertaining to the business operations of Development and Resources Corporation (D). The majority of the series is composed of the files of several officers of D, including John G. Burnett, Gerald M. Levin, David E. Lilienthal, John Oliver, and Jonathan L. Swift. The officer files contain correspondence, memoranda, and reports about managing D and its projects, including negotiating the language of contracts, finances and personnel, project progress updates to the country governments, and materials documenting the perception of D in the media. Lilienthal's files are largely composed of his memoranda on the purpose of D, as well as monthly status reports on the company's finances and performance and discussions of future D leadership. The series also includes records of several D offices, predominantly in Bangkok and Saigon. The records include financial reports, information on current and potential projects in the region, reports on conditions in their country, and correspondence on the coordination of project staff, the arrival of D officers, and writing reports to the country governments. Additionally, the series includes correspondence, policy and financial records, and topical files about several countries and similar projects conducted by other organizations.

Baker III served in senior government positions under three United States Presidents and was a central figure in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George Bush in the 1980s and early 1990s. Baker also led presidential campaigns for Presidents Gerald Ford, Reagan and Bush over the course of five consecutive presidential elections from 1976 to 1992. The papers document nearly every stage of Baker's career, including his work on presidential campaigns, his time as White House Chief of Staff for both Reagan and Bush, and his terms as Secretary of the Treasury under Reagan and Secretary of State under Bush.

Series 14: Audiovisual Materials, 1405-1994

The Audiovisual series consists of videotapes and sound recordings documenting Baker's career in government and politics. The majority of tapes in the series are VHS videotapes of Baker's appearances on television news programs or recordings of television news stories that include mention of Baker. Some recordings of speeches and public appearances are also available. The videocassettes created between 1988 and 1992, during Baker's years at the State Department, often contain multiple programs or events on a single tape. The section Political Movements and Parties (1968-2001) contains serials, monographs, small flyers, and pamphlets published by many of Chile's various political organizations. The publications in this section pertain not to specific political campaigns, but to other political activities and the year-to-year workings of the organizations.This section of this microfilm can seem particularly complicated, simply because of the ephemeral nature of political alliances in Latin America. Movements and parties may change their name, their logo, or their platforms repeatedly. The multi-party political system forces the continual re-negotiation of alliances among parties, and these alliances may be disbanded, reformed, or adjusted from year to year.An effort has been made throughout the microfilm to note relationships among various groups (e.g., Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia (see also Partido por la Democracia, Partido Radical Socialdemócrata, Partido Socialista de Chile)).

This collection consists of virtually all of the surviving records of Scribners (1846-1984), the New York City publisher, and reflect aspects of all of its publishing functions (soliciting and acquiring books, editing manuscripts, printing and manufacturing books, advertising and publicizing publications) and business concerns (book and magazine publisher, retail bookstore, subscription books department, educational books department, printing press and bindery, rare books department). Included are files of editorial correspondence with authors, manufacturing records about book production, advertising records, author contracts, a collection of dust jackets, book catalogs, ledgers, and photographs. While there are gaps in most of the series or record groups, there are records representative of all of the firm's former permutations: Baker & Scribner, Charles Scribner & Co., Scribner, Armstrong & Co., Scribner, Armstrong & Welford, Scribner & Co., Charles Scribner's Sons. The bulk of the material (1880s-1970s), however, dates from the period when the publisher bore its most familiar name, "Charles Scribner's Sons." There is also material related to early publishers' organizations and international copyright.

Scudder Family (Abner, Amos, Edward W., Jasper S., John, Richard Betts, and Wallace M.): Estate Inventories, Indentures, Invitation, Military Appointment, School Notes, Print of Members of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, and Receipt for Slave, 1711-1983

This group of material relates to five generations of the Trenton branch of the Scudder family. The first generation is represented by Richard Betts Scudder (1670-1754) with an appointment as lieutenant in a British company of foot soldiers in Burlington County from 1711 and two inventories relating to his Trenton estate, both dating 1754. For Richard Betts Scudder's grandsons Daniel Scudder (1736-1811) and Amos Scudder (1739-1824), there is an indenture dating 1770. Daniel Scudder's grandsons, John Scudder (1796-1840), Jasper Smith Scudder (1797-1877), and Abner Scudder (1800-1878), are represented by two indentures as well as a receipt for a slave named Samuel Conover, all dated 1825. Edward Wallace Scudder (1822-1893), son of Jasper Smith Scudder, is represented in two documents: a print of the members of the Supreme Court of the State of New Jersey in 1886 and an invitation to a World's Columbian Exposition event in 1892. Finally, the class notebooks of Wallace M. Scudder (1853-1931), son of Edward Wallace Scudder, are present in the collection and provide information regarding his training as an engineer at Lehigh University, circa 1869 to 1873, and his training as a lawyer at Harvard University from 1879 to 1881. The last items in this group of materials are a draft and final version of an article for the newsletter titled "The Scudder Association, Inc.," dating 1983. This newsletter and the drafts contain biographical information on Edward Wallace Scudder (1822-1893), Wallace McIlvaine Scudder (1853-1931), and Edward Wallace Scudder, II (1882-1953).

The External Views on Princeton series documents the opinions and views of non-Princetonians about Princeton University. Princeton has—almost since its founding—been a favorite subject of writers, artists, and filmmakers. Though it is often portrayed with admiration, it is also sometimes the subject of criticism or parody. This series also includes rankings of universities that include Princeton, things named for Princeton, and lists of Princetonians awarded non-Princeton prizes and awards. A large section of this series consists of newspaper and magazine articles about Princeton (the bulk of which date to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries). Because of the number of these that are oversize, an oversize run is included as part of the series. For media produced at Princeton or by Princetonians on subjects other than Princeton, see Series 24 (Multimedia). Personal papers include an address book, lists of appointments, certificates, a diary of Holden's time in Paris, a genealogical index of Harry H. Young's family, and photographs of MYH, her family, and friends. Documents include an extensive amount of papers related to stocks and investments with the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company, J. L. Hammet Company, and others. Also included are estate documents, trust documents, an extensive collection of tax papers, a birth certificate, and several revised wills.

This series consists of approximately one hundred and forty family letters, comprising some 450 pages, written on tours of Europe and the Middle East around 1840, several nicely illustrated. Includes a copius run of retained drafts of letters to Isaac Taylor, the publishers Houlston and Wright, Dr. Robert Trail, the painter Josiah Gilbert, and others, concerning publication of plates after drawings made on his tours. The present letters - many of which, written on large extended sheets of paper, are very long - display the élan of a young Englishman on the Grand Tour and provide the reader with a vivid view of Middle Eastern travel in the first half of the nineteenth century.

James McCosh was the first president since John Witherspoon who was not an alumnus of the College of New Jersey. Many similarities have been noted between the two men. Both were born in Scotland and graduated from the University of Edinburgh. Witherspoon was inaugurated in 1768, and McCosh was inaugurated one hundred years later in 1868. They died one hundred years apart, almost to the day, and like all presidents until Woodrow Wilson, both were ministers.

Series 3: Student-generated publications are those documents composed by enrolled undergraduate or graduate students. Several 19th century student publications are present, including some of the earliest known student newspapers, such as The Balance (1802) which provides an account of a Nassau Hall fire, and The Chameleon, written by the Class of 1835. The series also includes special editions and joke issues of the Daily Princetonian, such as The Gaily Printsanything (circa 1920s). In addition, the years 1969 and 1996 saw particular literary flourishing, with the inception of several student-generated magazines consisting of a few issues before the magazines' discontinuation. In a few cases, the records of the creating organization are included with copies of the publications.

Series 2: George A. Brakeley, 1850-1984

The George A. Brakeley series contains records of George A. Brakeley '1907, who was appointed Financial Vice-President in 1939, and then became Vice-President and Treasurer in 1941. Brakeley's tenure as Treasurer, which lasted until 1953, was marked by the University's conversion to war in the early 1940s, as well as the establishment of the Princeton University Fund and Annual Giving program. The records document all of these activities as well as other ongoing financial matters, and contain large amounts of correspondence between Brakeley and other University administrators.

Series 1: Correspondence and Personal Material comprises the most voluminous series in Gillett Griffin's papers. Griffin was a prolific correspondent who often created several drafts of his letters and illustrated their salutations. Griffin filed correspondence in several different alphabetical runs. Some correspondence was also unfiled. The bulk of the letters were received by Griffin, but drafts or copies of his own letters are also present.

Series 3: Artwork, 1937-2010

Artwork includes primarily drawings and sketches. The series also contains some pastels and paintings, printing and printing plates, as well as childhood artwork, pieces from Griffin's studies at Yale, and book designs. The bulk of the drawings in this series are undated and unsigned, but many of the sketches appear to date from the 1990s and 2000s. Human figures are the most common theme. A great number of drawings were labeled "erotic" by Griffin and were often stored, as was much of his correspondence and artwork, in interoffice envelopes. Erotic drawings of men appear throughout the series, not only in the folders so labeled.
