Albert O. Hirschman (1915- ) was a leading scholar in the field of economic development whose work focused on Latin America but encompassed the globe. He was a professor at Yale, Columbia, Harvard, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Hirschman's papers document his scholarship on economic development and his academic career and include his correspondence written while he was at the Institute for Advanced Study, his writings, and his research notes and materials, especially related to his work in Latin America and for the World Bank.

Notebooks, 1978-2008 February

The notebooks from Oberdorfer's journalism career are especially significant for their detailed notes and commentary on his travels abroad. The notebooks chronicle his many trips with Secretary of State George P. Shultz to Asia from 1983-1988; to the Middle East in 1983 and 1987; to the Soviet Union in 1987; and to other locations. Oberdorfer's trip with Secretary of State James Baker to Asia in November 1991 is also included. Additional travels documented in the notebooks include, but are not limited to, Oberdorfer's trips to the Soviet Union in 1978, January 1984, and April 1987; to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras in 1982; to Germany in 1983; and to the Middle East in 1985. He also made a number of trips to Korea, Japan, and China from 1987-1991. Oberdorfer's additional travels to Korea, Japan, and China after his retirement and his attendance at a variety of domestic and international conferences, mostly on the governments of Asia or on the Cold War, are also documented.

Subseries 2B: Microfilm, 1162-2223
The Microfilm Subseries contains correspondence, documents, newspapers, and writings of Wilson and others which had been microfilmed by various repositories and purchased by the editorial staff for reference and inclusion in the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Project. Repositories from which significant amounts of reels were purchased include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the London Public Records Office, Princeton University, and Yale University. This subseries is closely related to Subseries 1C: Miscellaneous Photocopies, in that similar types of materials are included in both subseries, although there is little or no overlapping content.

Series 1: Correspondence, 1942-2012
The letters in Series 1: Correspondence are primarily personal in nature, though some business correspondence is also included. Most of the correspondence dates from the Birds' time living in the Middle East and India in the 1960s and 1970s, though there are also letters that predate and postdate Eugene's tenure with the Foreign Service. In addition to the Birds' outgoing letters describing their lives to family and friends, the series also contains a large portion of letters that the Birds received from their children and from other Foreign Service families.

Carol Pitchersky Papers, 1963-2008
Carol Pitchersky (1947-2004) was a fundraiser and consultant who helped bring financial stability to dozens of public interest groups, notably the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). She served as Associate Director in charge of development and strategic planning at the ACLU and as a consultant to other prominent nonprofit organizations. The papers document Pitchersky's work as a fundraiser at the ACLU during the 1980s and for public interest groups in the 1970s and 1990s.

Series 2: Biographical, 1912-2008
The Biographical series contains materials regarding Baker's career and life and includes articles, interviews and oral histories, his diaries, awards and appointments, family correspondence, photographs, and weekly schedules for his retirement years. The articles include papers written by and about Baker regarding his life, as well as materials collected by A. Michael Noll on three CDs. The earlier diaries include references to his research at Bell Labs, while diaries beginning in the 1950s are predominantly concerned with his daily life. The awards and appointments materials include awards certificates, correspondence about accepted the awards and congratulations, his acceptance speeches, programs, and articles. Most awards are from academic and professional organizations or corporations for his contributions to science, from government agencies for his service, and honorary degrees from universities. The photographs include portraits of Baker, Baker receiving awards, at events, or with members of boards he served on, and personal photographs of unidentified people and landscapes. The weekly schedules record meetings and events that Baker attended, and also include correspondence about the events, itineraries, and expenses.

May 2008 Accession consists of correspondence between family members prior to and following Allen Macy Dulles' injury as a Marine lieutenant in the Korean War. Prior to the injury, the correspondence documents Dulles's education and activities at primary school, Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton University and Oxford University. Following the injury, materials include correspondence to and from Allen Macy Dulles, professional and personal correspondence of Allen Welsh Dulles and the Dulles family, correspondence with doctors regarding Dulles' physical condition, and military records including a citation for the Silver Star Medal which Dulles earned for his wartime leadership and bravery.

Series 1 consists of audio files of Bill Bradley's weekly Sirius/XM radio show, American Voices. The show features interviews with Americans from various walks of life, both people not widely known, whose interviews often highlight their humanitarian work, occupations, or personal lives, and more famous individuals. Senator Bradley's interviewees from the fields of politics, journalism, and popular culture include Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, James Carville, Jimmy Carter, John Edwards, Ann Curry, Jon Meacham, George Lucas, and many others. Regular segments of the show include the Famous American Voices quiz, where listeners try to guess the identity of a famous American from a sound clip of their voice, and the short stories from well-known individuals about their favorite places or sounds in the United States.

The Biographical series is primarily composed of Apple's personal documents, including baptismal records, wedding materials, event programs, correspondence to and from Apple, various news clippings, obituaries, and condolence letters. Of particular interest are presidential condolence letters, ceremonial programs for the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, letters from Julia Childs, Apple's passport, and a letter resigning his chairmanship of the Daily Princetonian.
