Romano-British Seal Box Lid, 0100s
The top lid is round and displays a central disk containing a red enameled lozenge shape. Surrounding the central figure are seven small circles each filled with red enamel. In the spaces between the decorative figures there are remains of blue and red enameling.

Series 2: Incoming Correspondence, 1026-2937

This series includes some 10,000 letters, telegrams, postcards and other communications received by Russell and his immediate associates over the years 1897 to 1956. The letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent, with corporate entries and cross reference cards as described for the outgoing correspondence. Russell's colleagues often sought his opinion of their work, and some 175 manuscripts are interspersed with the incoming letters. Folders of correspondence which contain one or more manuscripts are labeled on the right side "Manuscript enclosed with correspondence". At the same time, there is a 3 x 5 yellow card for each manuscript which lists its author, title, length, date, and location. The yellow cards are arranged alphabetically by author in a file stored in the manuscripts catalogue.
Series 1: Outgoing Correspondence, 1121-1980

The Russell papers contain drafts and carbon copies of some 13,000 letters which Russell wrote over the years 1908 - 1950 (approx.). These letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent. Correspondents include not only individuals, but businesses, scientific societies, schools and divisions of Princeton University. Letters to individuals filed under corporate entries may be located by consulting the file of white cards in the manuscripts catalogue. For example, looking in the cross-reference file under the name of R.A. Gregory, one finds a card which reads as follows:

The Microfilm Subseries contains correspondence, documents, newspapers, and writings of Wilson and others which had been microfilmed by various repositories and purchased by the editorial staff for reference and inclusion in the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Project. Repositories from which significant amounts of reels were purchased include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the London Public Records Office, Princeton University, and Yale University. This subseries is closely related to Subseries 1C: Miscellaneous Photocopies, in that similar types of materials are included in both subseries, although there is little or no overlapping content.

This series consists of miscellaneous papers, ranging in date from the late-13th to the mid-20th century, amassed primarily by John Ross Delafield reflecting his interest in history, particularly his interest in collecting family history family-related memorabilia. Similar to a subject file, the series includes papers created by as well as research and genealogical materials about families related to the Delafields and various other persons (particularly political figures) as well as miscellaneous materials documenting various places and subjects. There are as little as one item or up to several folders associated with each name and topic represented; and while a good number of items are original, a significant amount are copies of original documents. Found throughout this series is the correspondence of John Ross Delafield relating to his research and collecting efforts.

Fulk de Penebrugg, Edmund de Mussendene, Thomas Gyffard, John Neyrnuyt, and John Chastylonn, who are all knights, as well as others who are not knights, give notice that they have made an inquiry into the consanguinity and inheritance of John Rame, son of William Graunt of Bertone, in the village of Doddershall, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, dated 13 December 1392/93, during the 16th year of the reign of King Richard II of England. The document has three wax seals (some missing) affixed to each of nine tags.

Contains the following: (a) William of Waddington, Manuel des péchéz; (b) Roman des romans; (c) Plainte de la vièrge; (d) Pater noster in Latin, followed by a French exposition; and (e) Robert Grosseteste circa 1175-1253 Chateau d'amour. The exempla in the Manuel des péchéz are illustrated with 26 painted miniatures or pen-and-ink drawings. Two initials depict the manuscript's patron Joan Tateshal (d. 1310) of Tattershall Castle, Lincolnshire, in heraldic garments. Another initial depicts Grosseteste. Formerly in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps 1792-1872 no. 2223.

The Robert H. Taylor Collection consists of over 4,000 3,300 manuscripts illustrating in their wide range the scope of English literature from the fourteenth century to the 1940s. This finding aid focuses on the modern manuscripts, both bound and unbound, in the collection, which is designated "RTC01" within the Manuscripts Division of the Special Collections Department of the Princeton University Library.
