Press Conference: Soviet Writers, 1987 December 07
HAS ONLINE CONTENT
On the first day of a ten-day visit, a group of Soviet writers meets with American journalists and answers questions about, among other topics, Joseph Brodsky's Nobel Prize, the Soviet Writers Union, the economic conditions for writers and translators in the US versus the USSR, and how the policy of glasnost was affecting writing and publishing in their country. This is the first trip to the United States for Victor Golishev, the translator of many major American writers, including William Faulkner, Truman Capote, and J.D. Salinger, and Golishev gives his first impression. The writers speak in Russian, and Harris Coulter interprets for them. Audio is low but clear.
