Series 8, Photographs, circa 1849-1955

Series 8 includes photographs that John Van Antwerp MacMurray acquired as a Foreign Service officer, as well as family photographs and photos that MacMurray made as an amateur photographer in the various countries in which he served, particularly China. The series consists of photographs that were part of the original collection, processed in 1965, and photos added to the collection by MacMurray's surviving children in 1998, 2002, and 2007-2008. The series is divided into six subseries.

Subseries 8A consists of photos of John Van Antwerp MacMurray, his parents and ancestors, and family members. The subseries includes photographs of social gatherings and and snapshots of friends. Portrait photographs of friends, however, have been moved to Subseries 8B.

Series 8: Photographs, Audiovisual and Oversize Materials, circa 1845-1969 is arranged with photographs first, organized into portraits, family photos, honors and awards, then general photos. Each section is arranged chronologically therein. The audiovisual material is divided into audio tape and phonograph records, each arranged chronologically. Almost all the audio material was recorded after his tenure at CIA and captures luncheon speeches, television appearances, and award ceremonies, including the presentation of the National Security medal by President John F. Kennedy upon his retirement in 1961. The remaining items consist of various oversize and custom-boxed items that include photograph and scrapbook albums, a copy of Dulles's first book The Boer War (published when he was eight), as well as genealogical material, and a volume relating to Dulles's participation in the Three-Power Naval Conference.

Consists primarily of material relating to Ohio farmer Luzern Humphrey's overland journey from Kanesville, Iowa, to the Oregon Territory in 1852, his life there through 1853, and his return to Iowa in 1854, including his journal and 51 letters to his wife in Ohio. Also included are some papers relating to the family of William Miller, the founder of Adventism.

Consists of correspondence and other materials collected by Mathieu-Guillaume-Thérèse Villenave relating to Alina d'Eldir, including her biography, her work with magnetism treatments, and the Ordre Asiatique de Morale Universelle.

This collection consists of offprints of articles written by Princeton alumni and faculty; however, in some instances the articles are written about an individual alumni or faculty member. The offprints generally consist of journals, published articles, speeches, lectures, sermons, memorials, and articles from scientific journals and magazines.

Yost, Charles Woodruff
Charles W. Yost (1907-1981) led a varied career as a diplomat, United Nations representative, writer, and scholar. He was a member of the foreign service intermittently between 1930 and 1971, after which time he devoted himself full-time to writing and teaching. Yost's papers document his professional life in the Foreign Service, as well as his time in academia, and include his correspondence, writings, and photographs.

The Grounds and Buildings Series of the Historical Photograph Collection contains photographs of the grounds and buildings owned by Princeton University. The photographs date from the late 1850s to the present, with the bulk of the photographs dating from the 1870s to the 1940s.
