The Departments and Centers series consists of the records of the various departments (and in later years, research centers) which fall under the authority of the School of Engineering. As engineering has progressed rapidly over the course of the 20th century, many of these departments have undergone changes in title, mergers, or been disbanded completely. For the purposes of description, the names used here reflect the name of the Department or Center at the date of the most recent records found in the corresponding subseries.

The Princeton Scientific Expeditions Collection brings together original materials from the university archives that document the work of various scientific expeditions conducted under the aegis of Princeton University and its corporate predecessors. The connection with the university ranges from enterprises duly authorized in the trustees' minutes to expeditionary tasks that happen to have been carried out by members of the university faculty, often with little official notice of Princeton as an institution.

Consists of correspondence, documents, ledgers, photographs of the Meteor Crater (Ariz.) site, and printed matter of Barringer (Princeton University Class of 1879). The correspondence contains letters which deal with scientific and business activities in mining and meteorology, including those of several companies which Barringer founded or developed, such as the Hanover Bessemer Iron and Copper Company, El Palmarito Leasing Company, the Texas Iron Association, and the Meteor Crater Exploration Mining Company (general manager, George M. Calvocorresses, a major correspondent). The collection reflects Barringer's accomplishment in being the first to advance the theory that Meteor Crater was caused by the fall of a meteoric cluster, probably a small comet. There are a number of photographs, including over 100 cyanotypes and 6 lantern slides, mainly concerned with illustrating various craters and aspects of meteor study, mining equipment, and aerial surveys. There are also letters by fellow college classmate Woodrow Wilson, whose correspondence indicates that Barringer was not only a friend but also a personal adviser on mining and geological matters. In addition, the correspondence includes letters by Theodore Roosevelt, Owen Wister, General Leonard Wood, and Elihu Thomson.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering subseries contains records which document with relative thoroughness the activities of the Department from its founding in 1941 through the chairmanship of Daniel C. Sayre, which lasted until 1951. The records consist of correspondence and subject files, much of which relate to the Department's academic curriculum and research programs. The materials offer a glimpse into the early development of aeronautics as a field, of which Princeton's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering was at the forefront.

This collection consists of American historian William M. Armstrong's works and research material on Edwin Lawrence Godkin (1831-1902), a founder and editor of The Nation (1865-1881) and editor of the New York Evening Post (1883-1900). The collection contains typed manuscripts of Armstrong's biography on Godkin along with other writings, as well as photocopies, microfilms, and typescripts of correspondence.
