Each containing an index by author's last name, provide a chronological, numbered list of unsolicited manuscripts received (and rejected) each year. This chronological record identifies the date each manuscript was received, its title, the author's name and address, and the date that it was returned. Beginning in 1940, these records include the name or initials of the Scribner editor to whom each manuscript was assigned.
Correspondence between Scribner editors and authors or their literary agents regarding rejected book ideas and manuscripts. During 1940-1948, letters bear numbers that reference works found in the "Record of Manuscripts Received and Rejected" series.
