McAlister, W. L., Reverend
Consists of a manuscript letter written by Reverend W. L. McAlister, superintendent of Fort Coffee Academy and New Hope School for Girls, to Paul M. Palmer of Somerville, Fayette County, Tennessee. In the letter, Reverend McAlister notes that his work at the schools is progressing despite it being so new to him. He shares that the school has 50 boys and 30 girls, that both boys school teachers are ministers, and that there are regular class meetings. He notes that the circuit preacher is a Choctaw man who assists with interpreting (unnamed in the letter but referring to John Page). The letter also details recent illness in the reverend's family and their loneliness without friends where they are.

Racist, colonialist, and sexist language were used to describe many of the items in this collection. In some cases, descriptions were creator-supplied or generated from transcriptions of captions on the photographs. In other cases, in which photographs lacked any identifying information, descriptions were created by an archivist. These items are identified in the description with the note, "Cataloger supplied title." However, the collection is a candidate for ongoing reparative description work. We hope that researchers will engage in a dialogue with staff about issues in the collection and changes that could help.

Bell, Adie Kyle, Rev. (1815-1888)
Consists of two letters written by Reverend Adie Kyle Bell (1815-1888) to Brother Martin, about the Female Institute at Bucknell University. The letter from 1856 discusses the difficult situation around the construction of buildings for the Institution. He expresses his desire to keep the Institution in Lewisburg despite the 'selfish mercenary spirit of the place' and the 'deep rooted hate of the Institution.' The 1857 letter describes Bell's continuing struggle to complete the buildings and his efforts to fund the project.
