Series 5: Later Activities, 1905 June-2013

Series 5 documents Doar's legal career in private practice and his continued interest in civil rights matters from the 1960s. The majority of the series is composed of court documents pertaining to the investigation Doar led in the 1980s into the bribery charges laid against United States District Judge Alcee Hastings. A few other cases are also documented, though to a much lesser extent.

This series is largely comprised of minutes, memorandums, correspondence, financial and departmental reports, legislative updates, and other materials related to the meetings of the Board of Trustees and the National Advisory Council (NAC). To a lesser extent, it includes the records of select committees, especially the bylaws committee.

This series is predominately composed of research materials such as notes, articles and papers, interview transcripts, correspondence, and audiovisual media that were created or collected by Oberdorfer for various writing projects. Most of the materials pertain to Oberdorfer's biography of Senator Mike Mansfield or to Oberdorfer's interest in Korea, including some materials specifically related to his book The Two Koreas: A Contemporary History. Correspondence with Oberdorfer's publishers and promotional materials for these books are also present.

The Administrative Files series documents the founding and operations of the WPFC, including minutes of the Biennial meetings and Executive Committee meetings, press releases, annual reports (entitled "What We Did"), and correspondence, notably letters in protest of violations of freedom of the press and "fan mail" from individuals appreciative of the efforts of the WPFC. The series also contains copies of WPFC publications, including handbooks for journalists, reports, working papers, and lecture series, as well as publicity pamphlets for the WPFC and WPFC histories, declarations of free press, and amicae briefs. Also included are recordings of television appearances by WPFC members and of conferences, and materials related to International Press Freedom Day, begun in 1991 by UNESCO.

The Projects series documents several projects that the WPFC was involved in, including code words on phrases used to mask censorship practices in the post Cold-War era, the Coordinating Committee of Free Press Organizations and their Fund Against Censorship grants program, the Eastern European Aid Project, and the WPFC's media assistance program. The records predominantly include applications, meeting minutes, reports, and statements, as well as correspondence and related articles. The series also includes files of project proposals with related correspondence on if the proposal was accepted and background materials on the projects.

The Electronic Files series documents the last two decades of the WPFC operations, especially after 2000, and includes Common Files and Statements and Reports. The Common Files are composed of files on the administration of the WPFC and include committee files, meeting materials, project files, and correspondence. The Statements and Reports are composed of the files of individual WPFC staff members, including personal reports, speeches and statements, correspondence, biographies, and projects.

This series documents George McGovern's activities as the director of the Food for Peace Program (1961-1962) and United States Senator (1962-1980). Of special interest are files documenting McGovern's activities as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Indian Affairs of the Senate Committe on Interior and Insular Affairs (1967-1972) and as Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs (1969-1970, 1973-1977) and its successor, the Subcommittee on Nutrition of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry (1978-1980). In addition, the series contains documentation pertaining to McGovern's activities as chairman of the Subcommittee on Agricultural Credit and Rural Electrification (1971-1976) and the Subcommittees on South Asian Affairs (1973-1974) and Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs (1975-1977). The series includes legislation and policy files, statements, schedules and invitations, travel files, patronage files, and constituent correspondence.

Series 2 contains Granville Austin's research and writings on the Middle East. This material includes clippings, papers, handwritten notes, memos, limited correspondence, printed remarks and records of conference proceedings, press releases and briefings covering a period between 1957 and 2013. Austin's typescripts and drafts on the Middle East in the collection date from 1972 to 1993. He wrote many newspaper op-eds on the region, as well as the 1984 article "Palestinian Nationalism: Is it Viable?" in SAIS Review.
